NEW YORK — As people across the world prepare for holiday celebrations, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced new COVID-19 quarantine advisories for those traveling to New York City.The order goes into effect immediately.Amid concerns of a new COVID-19 variant found in the United Kingdom, those traveling from the UK will be personally served a Department of Health Commissioner’s Order to quarantine by the Sheriff’s Office.There will also be a follow-up door knock by the sheriff’s Travel Unit to make sure people are complying, according to the mayor.All other travelers coming to the city will receive a Department of Health Commissioner’s Order to quarantine via certified mail.Those who do not comply will be issued a ,000 fine the first day and another ,000 for each additional day.“If you don’t follow the quarantine, you’re endangering everyone in the city,” Mayor de Blasio said.The mayor also encouraged New Yorkers to avoid traveling during the holidays, stay local and celebrate with their immediate household.“The best gift you can give is to make sure the people you love will be able to gather together and next year in 2021."The new compliance order comes as Gov. NOBLESVILLE, Ind. — The teacher whose actions stopped a shooting at Noblesville West Middle School om Friday said his actions were, in his mind, "the only acceptable actions."Science teacher Jason Seaman didn't say much Monday morning in his first press conference since the shooting on Friday. But what he did say only reinforced what many already know about Seaman: It's not about him. He brushed off credit for stopping the shooter, instead praising other teachers, students and the school resource officer at the school. "I want to make it clear that my actions on that day, in my mind, were the only acceptable actions I could've done given the circumstances," Seaman said. "I deeply care for my students and their well-being. That is why I did what I did that day."Police say Seaman, 29, tackled a student who started firing in his classroom Friday morning. He was shot three times during the incident, but released from the hospital Saturday. Ella Whistler, a student at the school, was shot Friday. Her family says she's doing well at Riley Hospital for Children."I can't say enough how proud of Ella I am and how we all should be," Seaman said. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials are dropping a controversial piece of coronavirus guidance and telling all those who have been in close contact with infected people to get tested.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) essentially returned to its previous guidance about such tests."Due to the significance of asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic transmission, this guidance further reinforces the need to test asymptomatic persons, including close contacts of a person with documented SARS-CoV-2 infection," the CDC wrote in a "clarification" posted Friday. With the change, the CDC got rid of language posted last month that said people who didn’t feel sick didn’t need to get tested.That August change set off a rash of criticism from health experts who couldn’t fathom why the nation’s top public health agency would say such a thing amid a pandemic that has been difficult to control.The New York Times reports that last month's change was not actually written by CDC scientists and was posted to the agency’s website despite their serious objections. It reportedly came from the Department of Health and Human Services.The CDC website now says testing is recommended for all close contacts of persons with SARS-CoV-2 infection. (AP) — Workers were cleaning up after high tides caused a 40-foot sailboat to capsize and also flooded the streets of Newport Beach late Friday, causing a traffic jam that kept vehicles from leaving the Balboa Peninsula for hours. The Orange County Register reported that eight bulldozers are dedicated to building back a sandy berm before high waters return Saturday night. NEW YORK (AP) — Nearly six months after the coronavirus forced its closure, the 9/11 Memorial Museum will be reopening on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks next month. The memorial plaza had been open to the public with social distancing restrictions since early July, but the museum remained closed as did other cultural institutions. The anniversary day re-opening will be reserved for families of those killed in the 2001 attack and the 1993 World Trade Center attack. The public will be able to visit starting Sept. 12. Pandemic restrictions will be in effect, such as a limit of 25% of capacity, and a requirement to wear masks. 648
