SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The USS Midway Museum is celebrating 15 years in San Diego with a ticket discount offer for area residents. The deal announced Tuesday is rolling back admission to 2004 prices during the month of September. Tickets are for adults and seniors, and for youth and students. “Midway would not be the 5th most-popular American museum of any type (35,000 museums) if it were not for the nearly 800 San Diegans who donate more than 275,000 hours annually,” said founding president and CEO Mac McLaughlin. “They are the rock stars of Midway and the foundation of its success.” September marks the 74th anniversary of the USS Midway’s commissioning. The retired aircraft carrier opened as a museum in June 2004 after a 12-year campaign. The ship has been host to special events including an SDSU basketball game, an NFL pregame show, and episodes of The Bachelor and American Idol. The Midway is the most-visited ship museum in the world and the top-rated San Diego activity according to TripAdvisor, the museum reports. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The teen boy who was bitten by a shark last September in Encinitas threw the ceremonial first pitch at the Padres game Tuesday night.Keane Hayes, 14, was attacked by a shark while diving for lobsters off Beacon's beach. The shark managed to bite his left cheek, shoulder and chest.Hayes was an active athlete who was a pitcher for his baseball team, so he worried at the time whether or not he'd fully recover."I always thought, what if my arm isn’t the same? What if I’m not going to be able to throw?" said Hayes.But over the past nine months, he has been working hard with a physical therapist to get back to his former self."He’s come such a long way," said Jon Luu, the physical therapist who has been working with Keane."He’s always positive, always motivated to get better each and everyday," said Luu.While nervous, Hayes said he was excited to get up on the mound and show the crowd how far he had come.The pitch went straight over the plate. 978

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Police Lieutenant serving as the department's LGBT liaison has announced he is stepping down from the role. In an open letter posted to LGBTQ San Diego County News, Lt. Daniel Meyer explained why and how he made the decision to leave his position as the liaison. Lt. Meyer has been the liaison for 10 years. The news comes after San Diego Pride organizers sent a letter to the mayor announcing no law enforcement contingents would be allowed in the parade or festival, until policing changes are made, to show support for the Black LGBTQ community.The LGBT Community Center announced it would no longer allow armed, uniformed officers at its facilities and events. In his letter, Lt. Meyer says he found himself at a cross roads, proud of the work he's done to make SDPD a more inclusive and understanding agency. Meyer says he recognizes a need for change on a national level within community relations with law enforcement. Soledad National Veterans Memorial, honoring those who've selflessly served and sacrificed for the nation.Wayne Thompson, who served in the Navy for 30 years, says he attends the Mt. Soledad ceremony every year.“This world would be a lot different if we didn’t have the people that are on this wall. If they didn’t give their lives for the people in this country," said Thompson.Thompson did three tours in Vietnam and now suffers from health complications due to Agent Orange. He's had 11 seizures but says he would serve all over again if asked.“I kept wanting to serve, I don’t know, I just felt like I was doing something for the country, it’s hard to understand, but you get a fulfillment out of serving somebody," said Thompson.He says he's grateful for those who served before him and those serving now.Col. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The plaques at the Hillcrest pride monument have been restores after being vandalized in February. According to the Hillcrest Business Association, the repairs cost roughly ,500. All the money came through donations from local businesses, the association said. The plaques were vandalized in early February. Pictures show faces and the pride flag scratched out.
