MOSCOW, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Russian officials and experts have expressed optimism on further expansion of Sino-Russian ties on the eve of a visit here by Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping.A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said Thursday that Xi’s visit to Russia would further promote bilateral cooperation.Xi was invited by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to attend the inauguration of the Year of Chinese Language, and the opening ceremony of the second round of dialogue between the Chinese and Russian ruling parties, Qin Gang said."The Year of Chinese Language will promote mutual understanding and friendship between the Chinese and Russian people, which would also enhance the two countries' cultural cooperation," he said.At a press conference for the upcoming Year of Chinese Language held here on Wednesday, Li Hui, Chinese ambassador to Russia, said the language year would be conducive to nurturing language talents and deepening the bilateral relationship."I hope that, through the Year of Chinese Language, Russian people, particularly the young people, will understand Chinese society and traditional culture,” he said.China held the Year of Russian Language in 2009 and, with this year's reciprocation in Russia, is an effort to further consolidate the bilateral strategic partnership of cooperation.Li said previously the Year of Chinese Language, with its many events, would write a new page in China-Russia ties and elevate bilateral relations to a new high.In a recent interview with Xinhua, Alexander Lukin, director of the Center for East Asia and Shanghai Cooperation Organization Studies at Moscow State University for International Relations, said Russia-China ties, which have been developing smoothly, are at their best in history.The current ties between Russia and China are entirely equal and are based on practical interests, Lukin said."The two countries have almost no contradictions. SEOUL, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- South Korea plans to launch a joint research with China and Japan on the feasibility of a free trade agreement (FTA) among the three Northeast Asian countries, South Korea's foreign ministry said Wednesday.According to a report by the ministry, the country, which has been seeking an economic integration of the Northeast Asian region by creating favorable conditions for FTAs, will kick off a joint study with the countries, in which government officials, scholars and business representatives will participate.Along with the trilateral FTA, the country will also continue to push for settling separate bilateral trade agreements with China and Japan, the ministry said in the report.Currently, South Korea has free trade agreements with Chile, Singapore and the European Free Trade Association, as well as a similar pact with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.Recently reaching a free trade deal with the European Union, the country also wrapped up its free trade talks with India, settling the so-called comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) in August.With respect to the free trade deal with the United States, signed in June 2007, both countries are waiting for legislative approval.South Korea is also seeking similar trade deals with Australia, Canada, and Mexico.

BEIJING, March 19 (Xinhua) -- China must strengthen trade ties with Russia, Belarus, Finland and Sweden, said Vice Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng Friday, a day ahead of Vice President Xi Jinping's 11-day official visit to the four European countries.Gao told Xinhua that China had been Russia's biggest trading partner since February last year. Sino-Russian trade reached its peak in 2008, with trade volume hitting a record 58.8 billion U.S. dollars.However, the volume was dragged down by the global economic downturn last year, falling 31.8 percent year on year to 38.8 billion U.S. dollars.Sino-Russian trade volume grew 67.9 percent year on year in the first two months of 2010, which was close to the pre-crisis level, Gao said."More attention must be paid to the restructuring of trade cooperation between the two countries," said Gao.China should import more electro-mechanical and technological products from Russia and the two sides should cooperate more in resources development and cross investment.China was Belarus's biggest trading partner in Asia. Bilateral trade had grown 12-fold since 1992, when the two nations established diplomatic relations. Trade volume was 810 million U.S. dollars in 2009.Gao said the Chinese and Belarus governments should encourage companies to enhance cooperation in areas like energy, telecommunications and infrastructure, and support local banks to provide better financial services for each other's companies.He said Finland and Sweden were famous for their innovation-oriented economies, which happened to complement China's economic pattern.As China's eighth and ninth biggest EU trading partners, Sweden and Finland were also major vendors of technology to China, he said.China signed technology contracts worth 420 million U.S. dollars with Sweden and 370 million U.S. dollars with Finland last year.Gao said he hoped the two countries would help China gain EU recognition of its full market-economy status at an early date.

NANJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua)-- China and Japan have the opportunity to further develop their relationship through cooperation in a wide range of areas, an advisory panel on China-Japan relations said here Tuesday."Bilateral ties have an opportunity to develop as the two governments attach great importance to bilateral ties and are committed to long-term, stable, friendly, and cooperative relations," the fifth 21st Century Committee for China-Japan Friendship said after their first meeting.The committee, an advisory panel to both nations' governments, convened a three-day meeting in China beginning Sunday to discuss various aspects of China-Japan relations and to provide suggestions to the two governments."Members have discussed bilateral cooperation from a strategic point of view and have reached a fruitful outcome," the Chinese chair of the panel, Tang Jiaxuan, said.The committee agreed China and Japan should aim for cooperation in the post-financial crisis world and step up partnership in environmental protection and low-carbon business. Chinese members proposed building a recycling economic zone in Caofeidian, in north China's Hebei province.Telecommunications, bio-medicine, new materials and clean-fuel vehicles are also fields in which the two sides can work together.Another field for cooperation is culture, the panel said, stressing the importance of exchanges between media professionals and intellectuals in the two countries.Chinese members hoped visa procedures to enter Japan will be further simplified, young writers will have more opportunity for exchange, and that an arts festival on Buddhism is established.The committee suggested cooperation in Asian integration, including the building of a financial security network and speeding up research on the setting up of a free trade zone covering China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea."Japan is willing to work with China to strengthen mutual cooperation in various fields and improve understanding between peoples of the two countries," said chair of the Japanese side, Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) president Taizo Nishimuro

BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Being the only foreign rescue team to run medical-aid stations in quake-ravaged Haiti, Chinese rescuers are giving quake victims what they desperately need: medical assistance, team members told Xinhua via phone Saturday.     The China International Search and Rescue Team, arriving in Port-au-Prince at 2 a.m. local time on Jan. 14, opened the first medical assistance station at 8 p.m. the next day, said captain Hou Shike.     The station had been treating patients pulled out of debris and provided medical support to medical and security personnel, he said.     China's second station in the refugee camp near the office building of Haitian prime minister had treated and some 120 people, while giving hygiene tips and conducting epidemic prevention work in the camp.     "To prevent epidemics, we had sterilized an area of 300 square meters in the refugee camp crammed with thousands of quake victims," Hou said.     "Confronted with severe wound infection, numerous refugees are in urgent need of professional medical treatment," said Fan Haojun, deputy captain of the team.     He said although local volunteers had done their best to offer basic treatment, but because of the lack of wound cleansing, infections among some of the wounded had deteriorated that even small operations costed more time and medicines than usual, said Fan.     The Chinese rescue team of more than 60 people left Beijing for the Caribbean island Wednesday night along with 10 tonnes of food, equipment and medicines.     The massive quake also left eight Chinese police officers, serving in China's peacekeeping forces, buried. The body of one missing police officer had been found, said China's public security ministry late Saturday night.
