BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese analysts have refuted criticism that China is not acting responsibly enough to address the recent increase in tensions on the Korean Peninsula.It is evident that China is actively making diplomatic efforts to ease the tensions and pushing for contacts and talks among relevant parties, they said, adding that these facts should not be ignored.John McCain, a senior U.S. senator said China "is not behaving as a responsible world power" in dealing with the Korean Peninsula situation.The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs and the House Armed Services Committee has called on China to suspend economic and energy assistance to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to show the DPRK consequences for its "aggression."China on Tuesday called for a resumption of dialogue and negotiations amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula.(China does not control the DPRK, and China's actions are made out of a respect for other sovereign states and humanitarian considerations, said Zhu Feng, professor at Peking University's School of International Studies.United Nations Security Council Resolution 1874 adopted in June 2009 made it clear measures imposed by the resolution upon the DPRK "are not intended to have adverse humanitarian consequences for the civilian population of the DPRK.""There is serious misunderstanding and hostility between the DPRK and the Republic of Korea (ROK). The best solution is to make every possible effort to bring the parties to negotiation to maintain peace," Zhu said."Only with more contact and dialogue can we ease the current tensions and find a solution acceptable to all," Zhu added.As tensions grow, China has proposed emergency consultations be held next month between the heads of the delegations to the Six-Party Talks, Wu Dawei, Chinese special representative for the Korean Peninsula affairs, said Sunday.The analysts also called for calm and restraint to maintain and promote peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.The series of large joint military drills between the ROK and the United States in the Korean Peninsula region is unprecedented, and the show of force may sting the DPRK and heighten tensions, said Tao Wenzhao, a research fellow at the Institute of American Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS).The ROK and the United States conducted joint military drills in March, June, August and September in the ROK and in waters off the ROK coast.

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Beijing will face the challenge of an aging population over the coming five years and the city has limited experience in dealing with the phenomenon, the Beijing Morning Post reported Saturday.At the end of 2009, registered senior citizens in Beijing numbered 2.27 million, or 18.2 percent of the city's total population of permanent residents, the report said, citing the local government.The city will have a moderately aged society when its aged population reaches 3.24 million in 2015, the report said.Of the city's population of registered senior citizens, 1.94 million, or 85.6 percent, are below the age of 80 years, and 326,000, or 14.4 percent, are above the age of 80 years.In the coming five years, approximately 470,000 senior citizens in Beijing will require nursing.A survey conducted recently by the society and legal system committee of the municipal political consultative conference found that of 4,000-plus respondents, 24.5 percent intended to live in homes for the aged, a level much higher than the 4-percent level the municipal government expected.Some 53.3 percent of respondents said they are willing to spend their twilight years at home. That figure was significantly lower than the 90 percent figure the local government had expected.According to the survey, 99 percent of local citizens born after 1980 said they would not be able to look after their parents during their old age. 

BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese credit rating firm Dagong Global Credit Rating assessed the sovereign credit rating of Ireland at BBB in its third sovereign or regional credit rating report released Monday.Dagong's credit rating of Ireland is lower than that given by Moody's, Standard and Poor's and Fitch."Dagong made its assessment based on factors such as Ireland's increasing debt level, the administrative capability of its government, economic and financial strength," Dagong Global said.Dagong Global's announcement follows the proposed 85-billion-euro bailout of debt-hit Ireland by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.Dagong's report also rated four other nations - Finland, Uruguay, Kenya and Sudan.In terms of domestic currency-denominated debt, Finland received the firm's top AAA rating, but with a negative outlook.Uruguay was rated BB-plus while Kenya received a B rating.Sudan was rated C, the nation's first sovereign credit rating.Dagong Global uses a three-level assessment system, with each level containing three sub-levels. For example, AAA, AA and A.The rating agency published sovereign credit ratings in two earlier reports. One on July 11 rated 50 countries. The second on October 20 rated nine countries and regions.Founded in 1994, Dagong Global is a pioneer in the rating of industry, region and sovereign debt.
