VISTA (CNS) - An intoxicated driver who struck a homeless man in Oceanside and continued driving for more than a mile, even though the victim's body had gone through her windshield and ended up on the front seat, was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years to life in state prison.Esteysi "Stacy" Sanchez, 31, was convicted in April of second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run in the death of 69- year-old Jack Ray Tenhulzen.At one point, the sentencing hearing was interrupted because the defendant was sobbing uncontrollably, said Deputy District Attorney Robert Bruce.RELATED: Woman accused of hitting pedestrian, driving with his body in windshield found guiltyThe prosecutor told jurors that Sanchez displayed a conscious disregard for human life when she drove drunk and ran over Tenhulzen on a sidewalk on Mission Road near the state Route 76 bridge the morning of June 27, 2016.The victim went through the windshield and into the passenger seat of her car. Part of one of his legs -- which was severed in the accident -- was found at the back of the car near the rear window.Tenhulzen was hit so hard that he was ripped out of his pants and shoes, authorities said.After a night of drinking, Sanchez left a hotel room the next morning and was told by a male friend that she was too drunk to drive, Bruce told the jury.Defense attorney Herb Weston argued that Sanchez was tired and fell asleep behind the wheel and rode up on the sidewalk, striking Tenhulzen. He said Sanchez "freaked out" when she saw the victim's body in her car and kept driving, finally stopping a block from her home.Sanchez, who lived in Oceanside, still had shards of glass in her hair when she was taken into custody. Her blood-alcohol content was measured at between .18 and .19 percent -- more than twice the legal limit of .08 percent -- two hours after the collision, Bruce said. 1891

WASHINGTON (AP) — For the first time in Marine Corps history, women are attending a previously male-only combat training course in California.Marine Capt. Joshua Pena said 40 female Marine students checked-in Tuesday to the Marine Combat Training Battalion at Camp Pendleton.The move comes at least seven months after senior Marine leaders said they were considering the change, amid criticism that much of the early training excludes women.The entry-level course is for Marines who've finished boot camp and aren't assigned to infantry jobs. It lasts about a month and involves basic combat training, including patrol and convoy operations, marksmanship and the use of grenade launchers and machine guns.Pena said the female Marines will be fully integrated with the men, and that their inclusion triggered no changes to the course instruction. He said that eventually as many as 1,700 women would go through the combat training there each year.Currently Marine boot camp on the West Coast is only for male recruits. Women attend boot camp at Parris Island in South Carolina, where they are separated from the men for portions of the training. Congress members have been critical of that policy, and the Corps has been reviewing it.Until now, half of the Marine Corps' male recruits would go through their initial training on the West Coast where they had no female colleagues. A key reason for the limits is the shortage of female recruits. Women make up just 8.7 percent of the Corps.But Marine leaders have been eyeing changes with the belief that giving the men greater exposure to women recruits during training could foster better relations and greater respect over time. 1686

Virginia Beach Police are investigating a shooting that seriously injured two people early Sunday morning.Officers were alerted to multiple shots fired in the area around 12:45 a.m. A woman was located and suffering from a life-threatening wound. Medics treated the woman and took her to the hospital.A few minutes later at 12:48 a.m., officers received word that a victim with life-threatening injuries was located in several blocks away. EMS treated and took the victim to the hospital for further treatment.A possible suspect has been detained and the investigation is ongoing.Prior to this shooting, police responded to another shooting at the 1900 block of the Boardwalk. A woman suffered non-life threatening injuries in the incident.There is an increased police presence throughout the oceanfront area due to College Beach Weekend. Problems with violence in past years have caused some to be critical of the event. Last year, thousands signed a petition calling for an end to College Beach Weekend after four people at the Oceanfront were injured from a shooting. 1078

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Students at Rancho Minerva Middle School in Vista are sending love to a city still grieving after a mass shooting. Jessica Ward, a 6th and 8th-grade teacher at Minerva, was inspired to act after seeing a Facebook post:"Hello. We are teachers in El Paso. We would like to know if anyone is interested in sending us postcards to help our students know there is plenty of good in our world. As teachers, we may only be able to say so much. We think concrete messages of support would help us calm some fears. Any thoughts?"Ward and her more than 160 students got to work, creating letters filled with love, support, funny jokes, and positivity. "I just hope this small little gesture will bring happiness and positivity to their lives," said Ward. Ward also showed the students news clips of the tragedy, answering questions about what happened less than a month ago. "It's just something I like to be open about, so they understand that it's important to talk about. It's not something that should be silenced, it's something that everyone should be aware of, and part of the fight is talking about it," said Ward. You’ll still find the bright lights, restaurants and casinos Vegas is known for, but most businesses have now pivoted to a new focus -- safety.That’s where people like James Swanson come in.“We tried to make it as simple and inexpensive as possible,” Swanson said. When COVID-19 hit the U.S., shutting down the economy, he and his company saw a need.“It took us three or four weeks and two or three prototypes to perfect that,” he said. And it was done -- plastic dividers to help with social distancing in casinos and other spaces.“It wasn't like we had to buy any new equipment or bring in any new material, we just had to come up with new ideas to use what we had,” he said.Normally the design and print shop works with sports teams, festivals, casinos, and other clients. “Everything that got shut down was pretty much our core of business,” he said.So they created the easy to install dividers, and the demand blew up. “We got overwhelmingly positive responses from everyone we sent our table games to, just about how clean they were, how easy they were to set up,” Swanson explained.Ideas like these were vital for casinos to reopen. In 2019, over one-third of Americans said they visited a casino within the previous year, contributing to an industry that generates billions of dollars annually in state and local tax revenue, according to the American Gaming Association. To get those visitors back, casinos had to do more than install plastic.“We’ve put Plexiglas between the counters, we’ve spaced out the seats and couches in each of the race and sports books, and we make sure that our customers as well as our employees are always wearing masks, and socially distancing,” George Kliavkoff, President of Entertainment and Sports for MGM Resorts, said. “We’ve also introduced kiosks which allow people to sign up and place bets without having to go to a counter.“Kliavkoff said even with the safety measures in place, fewer bets are being placed the old-fashioned way.“When everything was shut down across the company and all of our hotels and casinos were shuttered, we were still making revenue with sports betting and iGaming. iGaming is online casino and poker and that actually surged as a business during the COVID shutdown,” he said. “Even if they’re in the sportsbook and enjoying watching the game in the sportsbook, we prefer them be placing their bets on the app, so that’s an embrace of the mobile technology.”While online betting and gambling isn’t legal in all states, MGM has created a platform for it called BetMGM. MGM Resorts recently attracted a billion investment from IAC. The company cited interest in MGM's online gaming and sports betting business. “We think that in four or five years, 38 states including a vast majority of the U.S. population will have legalized sports gaming and most of that will be done on mobile,” Kliavkoff said.“In those jurisdictions where online gambling is legal, there's this big surge of players. All of a sudden a lot of people were gambling online,” Rippee said. “Because it was legal and you could do it at home.” He sees online as a big opportunity for casinos as people’s priorities with travel change.“There are going to be some lasting changes,” he said.As tourists trickle back into casinos, the potential for online gambling is getting a lot of attention. But until it’s legal in more states, casinos are making a gamble on safety measures to bring customers back in.“Vegas always comes back, but that excitement is tempered.
