SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- As San Diego County awaits state guidance on how to move forward with reopening different sectors, a local church continues to defy public health orders by operating inside.Under the current public health order, religious services may continue outside with social distancing in place.Awaken Church was sent a cease and desist letter from the county’s public health officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten, for operating inside in July.A month later, the church is defying the health order again by resuming indoor operations on Sunday, August 23, the church’s 15th anniversary. Services and locations are posted on the church's website. A video on the church’s website shows pastors Jurgen and Leanne Matthesius speaking about why they have decided to reopen. The two said it was time to reopen and that “fighting for our religious freedoms and pushing back against government overreach is not only worth the cost; it’s essential.”In the video, the pastors say that the governor and county officials continue to keep churches under strict regulations, which prevents them from meeting the needs of their congregation.“Sadly, we’ve had five people connected to our church that have lost their lives, not from the virus but because of the virus. This was due to many factors, including suicide, drug overdose, and severe neglect from a hospital who was primarily focused on their COVID patients,” said Leanna Matthesius in the video.While county supervisor Nathan Fletcher acknowledged the importance of religious freedom and constitutional rights, he spoke of his frustrations with the church at a county COVID-19 press conference Monday. “It is very frustrating to see an entity that has an avenue to gather that is allowable, that is acceptable, that is much safer, choose to openly defy that in order to expose the members of their congregation to a very dangerous situation,” said Fletcher. “Just gather outdoors, physically distance, and wear a face covering.”Under the county’s public health order, houses of worship can continue to operate if “outdoor services and cultural ceremonial activities may be conducted provided all persons practice social distancing.”A county spokesperson tells ABC 10News that the church isn’t facing additional action from the county as of right now.ABC 10News reached out to Awaken Church for further comment but did not hear back. 2380

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) – It’s one of the most widely prescribed antibiotics in the country. It's called Cipro and the side effects could lead to your death. Experts are now calling for tighter controls on these prescriptions to protect the public.Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner spoke to former Cipro users in San Diego who say they hit rock bottom after taking the medication.“I felt like I was in the pit of hell,” says Annie Spackman from Chula Vista. She describes it as the darkest time of her life. “I didn't know how much more I could handle,” she adds. After taking the antibiotic Cipro, she tells us, “My knees, my ankles [and] my feet [were in] pain. Just shooting pain.”“[I had] burning sensations in my muscles, my joints, my tendons [and] my ligaments,” says Tom Ingoglia, who lives in Pacific Beach. He says his health also spiraled after taking Cipro. “I had pain throughout my body,” he adds.Spackman says she suffered from panic attacks, brain fog and depression. “You feel lonely [and] helpless,” she tells us.She says with faith, she pulled through. Yet, Florence Summers says her daughter, Deana, did not. “She parked her car on the side of the interstate and walked in front of a semi,” she cries.Her family blames Deana's suicide on side effects from Cipro, which she began taking just four months before her death. "It was not her. She would have never, ever, ever done something like that," adds Summers.Cipro is one of the brand names for a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones. Another brand name is Levaquin.Since 2015, the FDA has recognized a syndrome related to taking these drugs. It's called fluoroquinolone-associated disability. The FDA added black box warnings to these drugs, citing disabling and potentially irreversible side effects, including suicidal thoughts. However, some experts say that no one is reading that warning, buried in a medication insert.“We have suicides after 1 or 2 days of antibiotics,” says Dr. Charles Bennett. He’s a nationally recognized medication safety expert and says it's a big problem. “The risks outweigh the benefits,” he adds.A review of the FDA’s data shows more than 20,000 reports of psychiatric side effects, like anxiety and depression and 174 suicides connected to these antibiotics since 1998. Doctors in the U.S. wrote 29.7 million prescriptions for these drugs in 2016 alone, according to the CDC.Dr. Bennett has filed a petition with the FDA, asking that doctors who prescribe this medicine get patients to sign a release that they understand the risks before taking the drugs.The FDA told us it is reviewing Dr. Bennett's request for a new warning, adding, "It is important that health care providers and patients are aware of both the risks and benefits of fluoroquinolones."We reached out to Bayer which makes Cipro. The drug maker sent the following statement.“The health and safety of patients who use Bayer products is our top priority, and Bayer expresses its sympathies to the family of [Deana].Cipro? (ciprofloxacin) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, an important class of medications that treat a wide range of bacterial infections, many of which are serious and can be life-threatening. All medicines have potential side effects and the risks are communicated to physicians and patients in FDA-approved product labeling. The Cipro label contains FDA-approved language advising physicians and their patients about the potential side effects associated with the use of this therapy, including specific warnings about the risks of central nervous system and other psychiatric effects.The safety and efficacy of Bayer’s fluoroquinolones have been demonstrated in clinical trials involving more than 90,000 patients and extensive clinical experience in more than 800 million patients. Cipro was originally approved by the FDA in 1987 and is now widely available as a generic medication that is manufactured and supplied widely throughout the United States by several companies.Bayer closely monitors the safety and efficacy of its fluoroquinolones on an ongoing basis, as we do with all of our products. As with any prescription medication, Bayer encourages patients to discuss the risks and benefits of these medications with their healthcare provider.”The drug maker Janssen is no longer making Levaquin, but the drug is still available in generic form.Spackman adds, “Something more has to be done to let people know the extreme side effects it can have on you.” 4489

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Thanksgiving is just four days away, and preparations are already underway for the 17th Annual Father Joe’s Villages Thanksgiving 5K Run.Proceeds from the race and festivities go toward the one million meals the organization serves to those who need it every year. One of the biggest draws of the event is the pie made by the organization’s Culinary Arts program students. The students are making 300 pumpkin pies, 200 apple pies, and 100 blueberry pies ahead of the race, possibly more if they get additional pre-orders. The pies are served the day before Thanksgiving at the shelter downtown. The pies are also sold at Balboa Park on race day."These are individuals who come to us and were homeless and now we're trying to get them up on their feet,” Deacon Joe Vargas, President of Father Joe’s Villages, said.The students were once homeless but decided that cooking would help get them out of poverty. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A suspect was arrested in a 1970s-era killing in California after investigators used the same advanced DNA testing that helped crack the Golden State Killer case, authorities said Thursday.John Arthur Getreu, 75, was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting and strangling 21-year-old Janet Ann Taylor in March 1974, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office announced.Taylor was last seen alive attempting to hitchhike from Palo Alto to her home in nearby La Honda. Her body was found along a busy street.Getreu was already in custody in Santa Clara County after being charged last year with sexually assaulting and strangling Leslie Perlov, another 21-year-old woman, in 1973.Investigators previously believed the killings of Perlov and Taylor were connected. But their cases had gone unsolved until DNA testing evolved enough to deliver credible results from the degraded DNA collected at both killing scenes.Authorities in both counties submitted DNA samples to the same publicly available DNA database used to identify Joseph DeAngelo, who authorities believe is the Golden State Killer.Getreu was linked to both killings after the testing connected him to both crime scenes, investigators said.In the Golden State Killer case, investigators used DNA from the attacks to locate a relative of DeAngelo then turned to traditional techniques to find the suspect.Authorities have linked the Golden State Killer to 13 attacks of women throughout California between 1974 and 1986."Law enforcement is not giving up on victims," Assistant San Mateo County Sheriff Gregory Rothaus said at a news conference on Getreu in Redwood City.
