LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The ShakeAlertLA app that drew criticism for not notifying users during the July 4 and 5 earthquakes will begin sending alerts for smaller quakes, officials announced Wednesday.Starting this month, the early warning system will alert residents of Garcetti, CalTech and the United States Geological Survey. The previous threshold was magnitude 5.0.``Every day we are communicating the importance of preparedness, so that every Angeleno has the tools and resources they need to build a better life, and then protect that life when disaster strikes,'' Garcetti said.``Updates to ShakeAlertLA will result in an even more responsive application, making our city stronger and our families safer.''The USGS ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System for the West Coast detects significant earthquakes quick enough that ShakeAlerts can reach people a few seconds before shaking starts.``The USGS, through its scientific expertise, creates ShakeAlert earthquake early warnings, but in order to be successful, our public and private partners must develop technologies to use and distribute the alerts,'' said Doug Given, the USGS' earthquake early warning coordinator.ShakeAlertLA was developed in collaboration with USGS, AT&T and The Annenberg Foundation to combine USGS sensor network with mobile app technology, according to the Mayor's Office. LONG BEACH (CNS) - The California State University system announced Wednesday that it is planning for an anticipated return primarily to in-person courses starting next fall."While we are currently going through a very difficult surge in the pandemic, there is light at the end of the tunnel with the promising progress on vaccines," CSU Chancellor Timothy P. White said in a statement.He noted that it was critical to provide as much advance notice as possible to students and their families, as the CSU system had done in announcing its moves toward primarily virtual instruction as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.The CSU system, which locally includes CSU San Marcos and San Diego State University, announced in mid-March that its campuses would immediately transition in-person operations to a virtual mode, with the chancellor saying then that "the health and well-being of our students and employees is always a foremost priority."In September, White announced that CSU -- which held primarily virtual courses during the fall term -- would continue with predominantly online instruction for the academic term beginning in January."We are approaching planning for the 2021 fall term with the goal of having the majority of our on-campus experiences returning," said CSU Chancellor-select Joseph I. LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A FedEx plane had to make an emergency landing at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).The airport says FedEx Flight 1026, a Boeing 7677-300, landed safely after declaring an emergency Wednesday morning.The Los Angeles Fire Department transported one of the pilots to the hospital with a non-life threatening leg injury that was sustained during the evacuation of the plane.LAX says the aircraft wasn’t carrying any passengers.KNBC and KTTV report that the plane was arriving in California from Newark, New Jersey, and landed at about 5 p.m.According to KTTV, the pilots of the plane reported a problem with the landing gear before the aircraft landed and slid on its underside. 715

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A famous South American chef says he was stopped as he brought 40 piranhas in a duffel bag through Los Angeles International Airport.Virgilio Martinez, chef-owner of Central restaurant in Peru, tells the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday that he hoped to serve the predatory, sharp-toothed fish during an LA food festival.Martinez was featured in the third season of the Netflix show "Chef's Table."He says customs agents pulled him into an interrogation room last week when they found the cache of frozen, vacuum-sealed piranhas.After five hours, the agents let Martinez through with the fish. He used them that night on a salad.
