A new Congress is about to be sworn in. Democrats are taking over the House, and Republicans are adding to their majority in the Senate. They've already got a lot on their plate. They plan to advance several bills within the first 100 days. Most notably, Democratic Rep. Mike Thompson plans to introduce a bipartisan bill mandating universal background checks on all gun sales. Some GOP House members have already voiced support. Still, the Republican Senate likely won't pass any high-profile gun control bills. But given the shootings in Pittsburgh, Parkland, Santa Fe and Thousand Oaks in 2018, Democrats feel public momentum is on their side. Health care may be a place to find some common ground in 2019. Democrats and Republicans have said they're interested in looking at prescription drug prices. That's probably where the harmony will end. Republicans still want to gut the Affordable Care Act as Democrats look to bolster it. Of course, there will be many investigations. Democrats will be looking into Russia, the Trump family and its finances, potential conflicts of interest, James Comey's firing and the dealings of many of Trump's associates, just to name a few.There's lots to do in this new Congress, but with a divided government, there may not be room for each party to accomplish its goals. 2195

According to AAA's annual projection released on Thursday, 55 million Americans are expected to travel this year for Thanksgiving, making it the busiest Thanksgiving for travel since 2005.AAA said it expects a 2.9 percent increase in traffic over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend from last year, which marks about 1.5 million additional travelers. Of the 55 million planning to travel more than 50 miles, 49.3 million will do so by automobile. For those planning on traveling the day before Thanksgiving, major delays are expected, especially in major metropolitan areas. “With record levels of travelers, and persistent population growth in the country’s major metropolitan areas, drivers must prepare for major delays,” said Trevor Reed, transportation analyst at INRIX. “Although travel times will peak on Wednesday afternoon nationally, travelers should expect much heavier than normal congestion throughout the week.”If traveling by plane, AAA recommends to travel the Monday before Thanksgiving to take advantage of lower rates. Part of the reason for an increase in travel is due to strong economic numbers, AAA claims. “Strong economic fundamentals are motivating Americans to venture out this holiday in near-record numbers. A recent drug bust in Southern California yielded 18 pounds of fentanyl, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department. According to authorities, that's enough fentanyl for 4 million fatal doses, or enough to overdose every single person in Orange County.Police say the threat of fentanyl is increasing exponentially. Orange County authorities "have seized more than 100 pounds of the deadly drug, setting the pace to more than double fentanyl seizures for the third year," according to a news release.Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, making even small amounts incredibly deadly."The threat this extremely potent drug poses to our community is increasing exponentially, not subsiding," Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes said in a news release.According to the California Department of Health, statewide fentanyl deaths increased 614 percent from 2014 to 2018, jumping from 104 to 743 deaths. California's figures mirror a similar national uptick of fentanyl deaths. Among the more than 70,200 drug overdose deaths estimated in 2017, the sharpest increase occurred among deaths related to fentanyl and fentanyl analogs (other synthetic narcotics) with more than 28,400 overdose deaths, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.The drug seizure in Orange County on October 16 that produced 18 pounds of fentanyl, which has a street value of .25 million, also yielded 5 pounds of heroin and half a pound of methamphetamine. A physical struggle between a woman and a group of squeegee kids ended with a gunshot.It happened just after 2 p.m. Wednesday in Baltimore.A woman called police and reported her gun went off after a group of squeegee kids surrounded and began reaching into her car while stopped at a light.The woman told police the group first sprayed her windshield. According to a police report, the group allegedly became very aggressive, and began demanding money, and damaging the car with the squeegee.The victim told officers the group refused to move, and there was no way to drive off without running them over.Out of fear, the woman told police she reached into her purse and grabbed a registered handgun, while still asking them to leave.One of the suspects then reportedly reached into the car and grabbed the woman's wrist, she was holding the gun with.After a struggle, the gun fired into the passenger seat of the victim's vehicle, causing the group to flee.Police say they were unable to find anyone in the group.In their report, the officer wrote the victim had all proper permits to carry the gun.The incident is the latest of many involving squeegee kids in Baltimore.This article was written by Brian Kuebler and Ryan Dickstein for WMAR. 1254
