FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Bailey Anne Vincent dances with all of her senses but one. She says she’s profoundly deaf from all usable hearing. "I am a choreographer, a professional dancer, a homeschooling mother, a writer, an advocate, and a director of my own professional dance company which is a body-positive dance company outside of D.C.,” Vincent said. In life, she relies on reading lips and sign language, but when dancing, she’s able to feel the music and innately understand the rhythm. “So I can be a bit of a control freak because I like to hit play on the music myself, because when I hit play, it’s like I start my internal metronome, and I start the clock in my head,” Vincent said. She started losing her hearing as a child and realized why when she was diagnosed with a chronic illness. “I have cystic fibrosis transmembrane related disorder which is a variant of cystic fibrosis, and for me it impacts all of my major organs so my sinuses are impacted, my lungs, I’ve had a copious amounts of surgeries on my stomach, and I have a whole bunch of robot parts so I call myself a bionic ballerina,” Vincent said. From inhaling antibiotics to taking daily medications, Vincent faces many challenges with her health. So, when something like the coronavirus becomes a global concern, it means Vincent's life could be in danger. “I am considered high risk amid the coronavirus outbreak,” Vincent said. Vincent’s husband, John LaBarbera, says they always have to be cautious of germs and sickness around her, so at first, it didn’t seem like that big of deal. However, it was inevitable that the emotion of it all would eventually catch up. “Bailey often says to me ‘your cold could be my pneumonia.' All the sudden today as we were driving to the studio, I just started feeling this tightness in my chest – which understandably is a concern so I was like ‘oh no’—but I could immediately tell that it was just that I had been suppressing the stress about it, the worry about her and about the illnesses,” LaBarbera said. Vincent says cystic fibrosis patients are familiar with staying six feet apart from one another, but when the whole world needs to practice social distancing it can be a bit daunting. “Because of my health, I’m used to having to wipe things down, and be aware of germs, and avoid other people who are sick, but this is just so scary because we don’t want to bring it to anyone else who is immune-compromised or to my parents or the elderly and so I think everyone feels so much more involved in keeping one another safe,” Vincent said. It should be noted, we stayed multiple feet apart while recording this story, and sanitized all camera equipment for the safety of Vincent. And a studio that would normally be filled with dancers was reduced to Vincent and her family. Vincent says she’s not sure how she’ll handle this new reality. “I’m honestly really disheartened and depressed because for me, dance is my outlet. It’s the thing that makes me not worry about the pain of my physicality, and not think about my health so much. So not being able to have that outlet, of course, is difficult when you’re someone with chronic pain and issues to not be able to be out in the world and distract yourself from your current circumstance,” Vincent said. On top of that, Vincent is trying to keep her 3338

Message from Dr. Amie: Working on your self esteem is crucial. Studies show that low self esteem can lead to poor relationships, addiction issues and more. This is something that you have the ability to change and take action with. When we learn to love ourselves, we strive for a better life—a happier relationship, a more fulfilling career or recovery from addiction. But changing the deep-rooted feelings we have about ourselves isn't easy. Seeking a therapist to learn skills to combat negative thoughts is helpful. The skill is to challenge and adjust these negative thoughts into more positive ones. Learning to value and care for your mind and body through a healthy lifestyle is important. Healthy eating, exercise and meditation can be the first steps in reclaiming physical and emotional confidence. Fully engaging with those we love is important. Feeling loved and supported (and being able to offer love and support in return) is a wonderful way to start increasing self-esteem. If you don't have any immediate friends or family then consider joining a support group or even volunteering. Helping others and focusing on them has proven to increase positive thoughts and improve mental health. #mentalhealth #confidence #selfesteem #therapy #therapist #dramie #dramieharwick #amieharwick #positivethoughts #coping #anxiety #depression 1361

HAMPTON ROADS, Va.— Online shopping is convenient, especially at a time when everyone is encouraged to avoid crowds, but you’ll want to be sure to take extra steps during the holidays to make sure you’re not placing an order for someone else to pick up.Lori Torres, CEO of Parcel Pending, a package management company says one in five Americans is a victim of porch pirates.Porch pirates are constantly lurking for their next victim. They steal at night and they even steal during the day. The good news is, there are several things shoppers can do to make sure no one else gets your package except you.“Know when your package is getting delivered,” said Torres. “Don’t order and be going out of town for a couple of days when you were waiting for a package to arrive.”Torres says people should be monitoring delivery updates and be sure to grab their package once it’s delivered. She says shoppers can often times track and reroute packages online or through an app so they arrive when they are ready to pick them up.“A lot of the courier services from FedEx to UPS will let you reroute, and they can either hold them at their hub or they can hold them at a retail store.”That’s exactly what Amy Dallam is doing this holiday season. “One of the things I do is I sign up for text notifications of the delivery status so I know when it’s approaching and I can maybe delay an errand or something,” explained Dallam. If you’re not home during a delivery, experts say it’s a good idea to ask a neighbor to hold onto your package. Another safe option is mailing your package to a secure locker or P.O Box. You can also have the retailer hold on to your goods.“You can buy online and go into a store pick it up in a locker so now it’s contact free you get your item and safe and secure and you can get it the same day,” said Torres.Torres encourages anyone who has their package stolen to file a report with police. As criminals look for their next opportunity neighbors say they’ll be watching.“I would say, just as neighbors, look out for each other and if you see something that’s not right, follow up on it,” Dallam. AUSTIN, Texas – Inside a restaurant called “The Pita Shack,” Ayman Attar Bashi recreates part of his culture through the food served in his restaurant. “We are lucky,” he said. He and his family are lucky because a decade ago, they fled violence in Iraq, becoming refugees and resettling in Austin, Texas. “To be a refugee is not a choice,” he said. “Not a choice.” Refugees like Ayman, though, may no longer be able to count on Texas for a fresh start. Governor Greg Abbott said the state has already done more than its fair share. In a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Gov. Abbott said that since 2010, “…roughly 10% of all refugees resettled in the United States have been placed in Texas.” He added that, “in addition to accepting refugees all these years, Texas has been left by Congress to deal with disproportionate migration issues resulting from a broken federal immigration system.” “There had been 41 other governors that had had come out and said, ‘yes, our state we would love to continue to accept refugees’ and that was a mix of Democrats and Republican governors, and so Gov. Abbott was the very first who had said no,” said Russell Smith, with Refugee Services of Texas, the largest resettlement agency in a state. Last year, Texas took in 2,227 refugees – the most of any state. It was followed by Washington, with 1,930 and California with 1,802. Overall, America is admitting fewer refugees. Back in 2016, President Barack Obama set a limit of 110,000 for the 2017 fiscal year. This year, President Donald Trump is setting a limit of 18,000. Though a judge put a temporary stop to the Texas plan, the potential for refugees to be rejected looms large here. “Every action has negatively affected resettlement at the same time,” Smith said. Whether the plan eventually goes through – or gets permanently rejected by the courts – remains to be seen. Back at his restaurant, Ayman says he and his family feel safe and welcomed in Austin. “You’re an active element in this community because we’re hiring people, we are providing people with good food, spread our culture – at the end of the day, you feel like you are doing a lot of good things in this community,” he said. The Trump administration has not said yet whether it will seek to appeal the federal judge’s decision, which stopped Texas from refusing refugees. 2356

The University of Kentucky Men's Basketball team released a video on Monday evening asking the Big Blue Nation to join them in the Black Lives Matter movement."To our fans, the Big Blue Nation, we ask you to join with us," the video says. "You cheer us on the court, but we are asking you to support us off the court. Be a part of the change." We ask you to join us. pic.twitter.com/XYoFVnfHJX— Kentucky Basketball (@KentuckyMBB) September 1, 2020 Once the players and Coach John Calipari are done speaking, a clip from the song 'Strange Fruit' by Billie Holiday is played. The song was released in 1939 and protests the lynching of African-Americans. This article was written by Sam Porter for WLEX. 731
