How do astronauts go to the bathroom? It’s a question children have wondered for years, and now NASA wants help creating a better way.In a statement posted on their website, NASA is calling on the entire world to submit design concepts for compact toilets that can operate in both microgravity and lunar gravity.NASA is preparing to return to the Moon by 2024 as part of project Artemis, and as they upgrade other aspects of the flight, they are seeking new ideas for toilet facilities when astronauts are in the cabin and out of their spacesuits.Specially-designed toilets exist on the International Space Station already, however according to NASA, they were designed for microgravity only.NASA and HeroX are offering financial and merchandise rewards for winning design concepts in this Lunar Loo contest.Details about how to enter the contest can be found here. 873

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Many Californians are preparing for a new stay-at-home-order that bars restaurant dining, shutters salons and limits retail in an effort to curb spiraling coronavirus infections and hospitalizations. The new rules that take effect late Sunday in the vast region of Southern California, much of the San Francisco Bay Area and a large swath of the Central Valley also prohibit residents from gathering with people not in their households.Public health officials say the measures are critical as space dwindles in intensive care units. Law enforcement officials say they don’t plan to enforce the rules and are counting on residents to wear masks and practice physical distancing. Many business owners say they can’t afford to comply. 771

House Democrats elected to keep their leaders in place on Wednesday, marking a win for the party's moderate wing. The party confirmed Wednesday that Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-California, would continue to serve as Speaker of the House. Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Maryland, will again serve as the House Majority Leader, Rep. James Clyburn, D-South Carolina, will continue to serve as the House Majority Whip, and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries will keep his role as the chairman of the House Democratic caucus. No other Democrats mounted serious challenges to current party leadership positions.Pelosi's upcoming term will mark her fourth as Speaker of the House. She previously served as speaking when Democrats held the majority in the House from 2007 to 2011, and she was elected as Speaker again when Dems won back control following the 2016 midterms.Though House Democrats will be working with a Democrat president in Joe Biden next term, serious questions remain about the future of the party.Democrats went into the 2020 election hoping to control both chambers of Congress and the White House — and plenty of polling suggested that they would do so. But Democrats lost seats in the House in the 2020 election, and the control of the Senate hinges on two January run-off elections in Georgia — meaning Biden could face significant challenges in getting his legislation passed. 1367

Hours after two Atlanta Police officers were charged in connection with the death of Rayshard Brooks, the department confirmed that an unspecified number of officers are calling off tonight. The city’s Mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms, told CNN’s Chris Cuomo that some officers are being asked to extend their shift on Wednesday. Bottoms added that other jurisdictions have been notified and were asked to be on standby to provide the city with assistance.Despite reports on social media, Atlanta Police denied that officers are walking off the job.“The department is experiencing a higher than usual number of call outs with the incoming shift,” the department confirmed on Twitter. “We have enough resources to maintain operations & remain able to respond to incidents.”Bottoms acknowledged to Cuomo that officer morale is an issue.Earlier on Wednesday, Garrett Rolfe, who was fired from the Atlanta Police Department following the shooting, was charged with felony murder and 10 other crimes, including four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and several violations of his oath of office.Officer Devin Brosnan has been charged with aggravated assault and several violations of his oath of office.
