SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An 18-year-old man was shot twice in the stomach during an armed robbery early Thursday morning in a Mission Beach parking lot, police said.Two 18-year-old men were in a car leaving a party at the Bahia Resort Hotel, 998 West Mission Bay Drive, when they were approached by two men on foot in a public parking lot on Gleason Road at around 12:30 a.m.One of the men on foot pulled out a gun and pointed it at the pair in the car while demanding items from them, San Diego Police Department Officer Robert Heims said. The victims got out of the car and the man with the gun stole a chain necklace from one of the victims.The other victim tackled the gunman and was shot twice in the stomach, the officer said.The suspects fled in an unknown vehicle and the victim who had his necklace stolen drove the gunshot victim to a hospital for treatment of his wounds, Heims said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of ambushing a janitorial worker at a Little Italy coffee shop and trying to sexually assault her pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a half-dozen felony charges, including kidnapping with the intent to commit a sex offense.Christopher Merron, 28, was ordered held on million bail. He faces life in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Nicole Roth.Merron allegedly attacked the woman as she was cleaning the coffee shop in the 1700 block of India Street about 4:30 a.m. last Sunday, pushing her into a back room, taking her car keys and threatening her with a knife.Following a struggle, the victim, whose name was withheld, was able to break free and run out of the building, said San Diego police Lt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Murder and other felony charges were filed Wednesday against a 20-year-old probationer who allegedly fired a gunshot toward his brother, missing him but inadvertently killing a next-door neighbor asleep in his bed.Manuula Save is accused in the Saturday morning death of Michael Walker, 38, who was shot about 1:45 a.m. by a bullet that traveled through a bedroom wall in the defendant's apartment and into the victim's unit in the 13400 block of Midland Road. Walker was hit once in the abdomen and died at a hospital about an hour later.Save faces life imprisonment if convicted of murder, shooting into an inhabited dwelling, assault with a semi-automatic firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm.RELATED: Man killed by stray bullet in Poway apartment complex, suspect arrestedDeputy District Attorney Kristie Nikoletich said the shooting stemmed from a verbal argument and physical fight between Save and his older brother. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of opening fire inside a Poway synagogue, killing a woman and injuring three other people, pleaded not guilty today to more than 100 federal hate crime charges alleging he acted out of hatred toward the Jewish and Muslim communities.John T. Earnest, 19, is accused not only of the synagogue shooting but also of an earlier arson fire at an Escondido mosque. He is being charged by both federal and state prosecutors and faces a possible death sentence in both cases. Neither office has made a decision regarding whether they will pursue the death penalty.Earnest, of Rancho Penasquitos, is accused of carrying out the shooting at Chabad of Poway on April 27 -- the last day of Passover -- killing Lori Gilbert Kaye, 60, who was shot twice in the synagogue's foyer and died at a hospital.The congregation's rabbi, Yisroel Goldstein, 57, lost an index finger in the shooting. Two other people -- Almog Peretz, 34, and his 8-year-old niece, Noya Dahan -- were also injured.Earnest is also accused of setting a March 24 fire at an Escondido mosque -- a crime to which Earnest allegedly confessed in an online manifesto he posted prior to the synagogue shooting.Following his initial appearance Tuesday afternoon, he's slated to return to court May 28 for a preliminary hearing. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman whose Nissan Versa ended up underneath a semi-truck on Interstate 8 in El Cajon Monday escaped serious injury and was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, authorities said. Heidi Farst, 56, of El Cajon was driving westbound on I-8 near Main Street when her compact car was rear-ended by another vehicle just before 6 a.m. Farst's car then collided with the semi-truck, flipped over and landed upside down underneath the rig, California Highway Patrol Officer Travis Garrow said. Farst was freed from the wreckage and transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital for what were described as minor injuries, a CHP dispatcher said. She was then booked into the Las Colinas Detention Facility on suspicion of DUI, according to Garrow. No other injuries were reported. The crash triggered lane closures and a SigAlert.
