BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- China Tuesday pledged to continue to promote the development of military relations with Singapore.Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie made the remarks when meeting with Chiang Chie Foo, visiting Permanent Secretary of the Singaporean Defense Ministry.Recent years had witnessed a rapid development of China-Singapore relations, with political mutual trust, a reciprocal and mutually beneficial economic relationship and fruitful cooperation, Liang said.Bilateral military ties had undergone a healthy development, with sound exchanges and cooperation mechanisms, frequent high-level visits and good cooperation in personnel training, joint military training and escort missions, Liang said.China was willing to work with Singapore to continuously boost relations between the two countries and armed forces, so as to play an active role in jointly safeguarding regional security and stability, he said.Chiang said Singapore attached great importance to the development of its relations with China.The two armed forces were expected to maintain exchanges and cooperation and to strengthen understanding and mutual trust, he said.Ma Xiaotian, deputy chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and Chiang co-chaired the third China-Singapore defense policy dialogue before the meeting.Both sides exchanged views in-depth on regional security, relations of the two countries and armed forces as well as other issues of common concern and reached consensus on further strengthening military ties.They agreed to continue to enhance China-Singapore military cooperation and promote the development of friendly and cooperative military relations.The two nations held the first defense policy dialogue in January 2008 in China and the second in March 2009 in Singapore.

WUHAN, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Bidding farewell to their hometown for good, 499 villagers in central China's Hubei Province left their homes Wednesday morning, becoming the first group to relocate to make way for China's South-North Water Diversion Project (SNWD).Their hometown of Niuhelin District, Danjiankou City, will be submerged by 2014 under 170 meters of water."I am surprised nobody cried when the coaches left our village. Last night, we felt sorrow when the whole village gathered to have our last dinner in our hometown together," a villager surnamed Wang said.The government paid the dinner and organized a troupe of gong and drum players to cheer up the villagers.Their journey was the starting point for the nation's largest relocation program after that of the Three Gorges Hydro-Power Project, which involved the relocation of 1.27 million.The relocation for the building of the central route of the SNWD by 2014 will involve 330,000 residents - 180,000 in Hubei and 150,000 in neighboring Henan Province.The project is designed to take water from a section of China's largest river, the Yangtze, to satisfy demand in the north China's drought-prone megacities - Beijing and Tianjin.According to the government, from Wednesday until September 30, about 60,000 people will be relocated.At the farewell scene, a fleet of 15 coaches carried the villagers while 34 trucks loaded with the villagers' belongings was followed by a number of ambulances with the village's elderly, unwell and pregnant."We may set a record in terms of speed of relocation -- 60,000 people within 50 days. BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Economic data for May released Friday showed that China was eyeing rising inflation and slowing economic growth, indicative of what the "the most complicated year" meant for the country's economy.Experts said the mixed bag of economic data would make it difficult for China's policymakers in the coming months.China's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, rose in May to 3.1 percent, the highest since November 2008, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Friday.The NBS also reported that growth of industrial value-added output slowed to 16.5 percent in May from 17.8 percent in April.Urban fixed assets investment for the first five months rose 25.9 percent year on year, 0.2 percentage points down from the first four months.INFLATION QUICKENSThe 3.1 percent CPI growth was up 0.3 percentage points from April's rise of 2.8 percent. In the first five months, China's CPI rose 2.5 percent year on year.The May figure exceeded the government's year-average target of 3 percent set in March.The producer price index (PPI), a major measure of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 7.1 percent year on year in May, up 0.3 percentage points from April's 6.8 percent.In May, the CPI in China's urban areas increased 2.9 percent and in rural regions by 3.3 percent. Food prices, which accounted for about a third of the weighting in calculating the CPI, rose 6.1 percent.

CHENGDU, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- The massive mudslide that hit Wenchuan County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, Saturday had killed 15 people and injured nine others by Monday, local authorities said Tuesday.Wenchuan County was the epicenter of the 8.0-magnitude earthquake that jolted Sichuan and other neighboring provinces in west China in May 2008. The quake left some 87,000 people dead or missing.The county, which falls under the jurisdiction of Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba, was ravaged by rain-triggered floods and mudslides Saturday.At least 31 people were reported missing following the mudslide, but whether the 15 deaths were included was not known, according to a statement issued by the county government of Wenchuan.More than 50,000 residents and tourists were forced to evacuate in Aba as the local meteorological station issued warnings beginning Friday about expected heavy rains and possible geological disasters.Also, the county government of Wenchuan has arranged temporary shelters for residents left homeless by the floods.In Yingxiu Township of Wenchuan, rows of newly completed homes were submerged by the overflowed Minjiang River which runs through the town. The new homes had been built to accommodate those residents relocated outside Yingxiu after the deadly earthquake.If the flooding had not occurred, Lian Qunhua, who opened a grocery in the town, would have received the key for her new home in two weeks."This used to be my home," Lian told a Xinhua reporter, pointing to some debris in front of her. "That is my new home," she said, indicating a row of fresh new buildings soaked in the flood waters on the opposite bank of the Minjiang River."I feel hurt, indeed," she lamented.
