SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Caltrans is starting a yearlong pilot program in San Diego to reduce wrong-way driving.The agency has installed markings at 30 locations that include red arrows and "DO NOT ENTER" written across the pavement that are only legible when driving in the wrong direction onto freeway ramps.The markings will stay up until the end of the year, according to Caltrans.The agency says that a previous three-year pilot program helped reduce wrong-way driving by 44% in San Diego. The program utilized special reflectors, sensors, and illuminated signs in early 2018.Now, those specialized reflectors have been installed on hundreds of miles of highways, according to Caltrans."The number of wrong-way drivers decreased significantly during the initial pilot program," said Caltrans Director Toks Omishakin. "The addition of these markings, along with what we have learned thus far, will go a long way as we continue to study ways to deter wrong-way drivers."While wrong-way crashes only account for less than 1% of all crashes on California's highways, they are often among the deadliest, Caltrans said."We are constantly looking for ways to improve safety on the transportation system," said Caltrans (San Diego area) District 11 Director Gustavo Dallarda. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Days after Governor Gavin Newsom signed a new law aimed at child sex abuse, three San Diego women came forward to announce a lawsuit against the Diocese of San Diego. The three women say they were abused by Monsignor Gregory Sheridan as children. Sheridan worked in this diocese for 35 years and is on the diocese’s list of credibly accused abusive priests. This new measure gives survivors of childhood sexual assault, regardless of their age, a three-year “window” to bring a civil lawsuit against any perpetrator and employer or third party that was aware of misconduct that created a risk of childhood sexual assault. The new law also extends the statute of limitations for survivors of childhood sexual assault, giving survivors more time to file civil lawsuits: up to their 40th birthday (previously their 26th birthday) or within five years (previously three years) from the date of discovery of an adult psychological injury caused by the childhood sexual assault. One of the victims told 10News, "It doesn’t mean you don’t love God, doesn’t mean you don’t support your church, it means this priest was a bad apple."10News reached out to the Diocese of San Diego and they sent a statement that reads in part, "There is no crime or sin worse than a priest abusing the young people he is sworn to serve and protect. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As former San Diego State star Kawhi Leonard readies for his Los Angeles Clippers debut Tuesday, another Aztec will also start the season on an active NBA roster.SDSU's Jalen McDaniels was signed to a multi-year contract and placed on the 17-man roster for the Charlotte Hornets Sunday, the team announced. McDaniels left SDSU after his sophomore season last spring and was picked 52nd overall in the 2019 NBA Draft.The 6-10 forward led the Aztecs in rebound average, total steals, and was second in scoring average last season. McDaniels signed with the Hornets on Oct. 10 under an unguaranteed Exhibit 10 contract, before the team converted it to a two-way contract on Saturday — meaning he could go back and forth between Charlotte's G League-affiliate, Greensboro Swarm, and the NBA. McDaniels participated in two preseason games with the Hornets, averaging 1.0 points and 0.5 rebounds in 5.3 minutes per game, according to the team.Sunday, the team bolstered his contract to a three-year, partially guaranteed contract ahead of the season opener. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Crowds have been sparse at Balboa Park since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, but that doesn't mean the park hasn't been busy."The change in Balboa Park is evident. The change in Balboa Park is important," says Peter Comiskey, the Executive Director of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership.Comiskey says nearly every museum in the park has used the unexpected downtime to refresh their exhibits or renovate their facility. That includes large-scale renovations at the Timken and Mingei Museums."While they've been closed, they've been taking advantage of, in some cases, completely removing all of their pieces and reworking their entire buildings," says Comiskey.RELATED: Observation Wheel could bring people back to the parkBut it's not just museums. The 100-year old carousel is getting refurbished. Crews are almost finished building an observation deck around the Morton Bay Fig Tree. Five new cottages in the International Village are about to open up, housing 9 new cultural groups. "We want to do our part to help elevate the Palisades and revitalize it in the way that Plaza de Panama was."The pandemic allowed the Comic-Con Museum to get a head start on their online offerings, while still working on building renovations and exhibit planning.The Starlight plans show new terraced lawn seating, nature gardens, walking trails, and smaller stages surrounding the main bowl.Save Starlight President Steve Stopper says work is already underway on some of the smaller parts of the renovation, so they can build excitement over the coming months."It creates a window for people to get behind the idea," he says. "They can see this is really viable for the future."Stopper says it's an exciting time to be around the park, as it adds more gems to the Crown Jewel of San Diego. 2669

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - City leaders say the canyon near the 163 that caught fire Tuesday afternoon was overdue for tree trimming and a homeless flushing.The fire only burned 10 trees but it has many neighbors frustrated that the fire even started in the first place.“That was a pretty big one,” said Councilman Chris Ward on the fire, “we’re pretty scared here in the mid city neighborhoods with the urban canyons which catch fire from time to time.”Ward says he has been trying for over a year to get CalTrans and the City of San Diego to clear out the canyons.Officials have not announced the cause of the fire but it is believe to have been from a cooking fire started by homeless illegally camping.RELATED: Brush fire breaks out near 163“About a generation ago we lost 75 homes in Normal Heights to a canyon fire so this is a real, real danger.” said Ward, “We gotta take this seriously.” 896
