BOSTON, Mass. – Just a few miles away from the constant construction within downtown Boston’s skyline sits an abandoned school that’s about to get a second chance to reopen its doors. “We're doing a historic restoration of this beautiful building,” said Aileen Montour. However, the century-old building won’t be reopening as a school. Instead, it will be converted into a first for Boston: affordable housing for LGBTQ seniors. Aileen Montour is spearheading the project; one that she sees as a personal mission. “The number one concern of LGBT seniors is where are we going to live, where we can be safe and continue to be out and live our lives, not be fearful and have to go back in the closet at this point in life,” said Montour, who is with LGBTQ Senior Housing, Inc. The 74 units there will target low-income LGBTQ seniors, with rent based on a percentage of their income. However, even when all of the units are ready to move in, advocates say it will still only represent a small fraction of the affordable housing needed for the “Stonewall Generation” across the country. In the U.S., it’s estimated there will be 7 million LGBTQ seniors by the year 2030. In addition, 48% of same-sex older couples say they have experienced housing discrimination. Across the country, only about a dozen states have laws specifically prohibiting housing discrimination based on sexual orientation. “LGBT older people, much like the rest of the population, are seeking affordable housing,” said Aaron Tax, who is with SAGE, a group that focuses on advocacy and services for LGBT elders. “But on top of that they're seeking affordable housing that’s going to be welcoming, where they can be themselves.” Ideally, it’s also a place where, in their golden years, these seniors could also be helped in an environment that fosters social connections. “For example, this generation does not have kids, so there is a thought about the size of the apartments,” said Philippe Saad, the project’s architect, with the firm Dimella Shaffer. “So, what we as architects think about in this space, is being able to provide spaces and the environment that will make for these friendships, to allow for people to interact with one another.” In addition to Boston, there is also an affordable housing community for LGBTQ seniors that will be opening in New York City with 300 units.To learn more about the Boston project and LGBTQ Senior Housing, Inc., 2443

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The robotics lab at the University of Louisville is a lot like a toy shop. “You don’t feel like you’re working with them, more like you’re playing around with robots,” said Sumit Das, a researcher at the lab. For him, it’s a dream come true. “I was always tinkering with things and making new stuff and my parents always encouraging me to do new stuff and even if I failed, they would be like, ‘it’s ok, move on to the next project.’ So, it has always been a project after project after project,” said Das. But here’s the thing. He’s not playing around. Sumit and PhD student Shamsudeen Abubakar, who goes by Abu, are part of a research team building a robot to help people heal. “So, in my estimate, about 5 to 10 years, hopefully we’ll see them be able to work alongside nurses,” said Das. This is ARNA—the Adaptive Nursing Robot Assistant. ARNA is built to help nurses do their job. “So you push on this like a walker that elderly people use,” said Abubakar The robot can do a few things: monitor a patients vital signs, pick things up and bring them to a patient, and help them walk down a hallway. “This robot really has the potential to diminish the incident of patient falls,” said Cindi Logsdon, a nursing profesor at the University of Louisville. Patient falls are a big deal, and Logsdon knows. She’s a consultant on the project and was the Associate Chief of Nursing at the University of Louisville Hospital for almost 10 years. “A big reason that patients fall when they’re in hospitals is they try and get out of bed by themselves, or they try and reach something that they can’t reach, or they depend on the darn bedside table,” said Logsdon. According to the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, between 700,000 and 1 million patients fall in hospitals each year. Everyone involved in the project is hoping the robot will make a big difference in the U.S. and abroad. “I’m from Nigeria which is a developing country and I think robotics offers an avenue to kind of, you know, not jump the steps in development but kind of close the gap,” said Abubakar. “If there are any of the basic sort of skills that a robot could take over in collaboration with the nurses, in partnership with a nurse, it frees up the nurse for more higher level activities,” said Logsdon. “It’s about how to assist them in doing tasks that can eat their time up,” said Das. Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom reopen first, with EPCOT and Hollywood Studios following on July 15.Ahead of the reopening, Disney paused new ticket sales and hotel bookings to focus on existing ticket holders and Annual Passholders.According to a press release, tickets and hotel bookings may be released at different times Thursday. Disney is using an online reservation system to open safely and manage park attendance. Virtual waiting rooms will be used to manage the high volume of guests trying to buy tickets or book stays.Reservations are required for all guests to visit the parks, as well as a valid park ticket for the same park on the same date to enter. Make sure to check the part reservation availability before buying new tickets, then visit Disney's website to make your park reservations immediately after your new ticket purchase.New safety guidelines include:Temperature checks: All guests to the park will be screened by no-touch thermometers at Disney Springs or at the Walt Disney World theme parks.
