FAIRFIELD, Calif. (KGTV) - A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer was killed Friday in a crash involving a truck in the San Francisco suburb of Fairfield.He was identified as Solano-area officer Kirk Griess, KGO reported.Officer Griess was thrown from the motorcycle over a guardrail on Interstate 80 at North Texas St.Law enforcement officers gathered at Northbay Regional Medical Center in Fairfield to pay their respects to the officer. 455

Federal health officials reported Thursday an additional 109 cases of cyclospora infection in an ongoing outbreak linked to McDonald's salads that began in May.The total number of laboratory-confirmed illnesses from this outbreak is now 395, according to a?statement from the US Food and Drug Administration. At least 16 of the sick individuals have been hospitalized.The cyclospora parasite causes intestinal illness in people who consumed contaminated food or water. Symptoms can begin a week or more after consuming the parasite. They include diarrhea and frequent, sometimes explosive bowel movements, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those who are infected might also experience loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps or pain, nausea, gas and fatigue. Vomiting, headache, fever, body aches and flu-like symptoms can also occur.The illness can last a few days to a few months, and patients might feel better but then get worse again. Cyclosporiasis can be treated with antibiotics.Illnesses have been reported in 15 states: Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin. However, the patients in Connecticut, Michigan, Tennessee and Virginia bought their salads in Illinois while traveling, and the Florida patient bought the salad in Kentucky.The FDA said an unused package of a Fresh Express salad mix of romaine lettuce and carrots that had been distributed to McDonald's tested positive for the presence of Cyclospora though it was past its July 19 expiration date."Epidemiologic evidence indicates that salads purchased from McDonald's restaurants are one likely source of these infections. The investigation is ongoing, and FDA is working to determine the sources of the ingredients that were in common to the salads served at McDonald's," the CDC said in an outbreak update posted on its website Thursday.McDonald's said in a?statement on July 13 that it had removed the salad mix from it's impacted restaurants and replaced it with a different supplier.In a?recall statement?on the Fresh Express website, the company said it had launched a "precautionary recall" of the institutional food service product on July 27 of a "limited number of cases."The statement said, "Fresh Express follows rigid food safety requirements and preventive controls throughout our supply chain that are carefully designed to mitigate against potential health risks."The company's salad mix recall was connected with a?public health alert issued Monday by the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service advising consumers that certain salad and wrap products might be contaminated with cyclospora. The products were sold by grocery stores including Kroger, Trader Joe's and Walgreens.In the alert, the USDA said the issue was discovered when Indianapolis-based food distributor Caito Foods "received notification from their lettuce supplier, Fresh Express, that the chopped romaine that is used to manufacture some of their salads and wraps was being recalled."The lettuce from McDonald's that tested positive for the cyclospora parasite was in the same lot as the lettuce distributed to Caito Foods, the CDC said Wednesday. (KGTV) -- An Encinitas family is thanking surfing legend Laird Hamilton after they say he rescued them during a flood while on vacation in Kauai.The Gwilliam family says they were enjoying a normal vacation on the island when, like usual, it started to rain.The family says they weren’t worried until the heavy rain got even heavier. “It was the type of rain that was so heavy, we would say there’s no way I could get worse," recouted Erin Gwilliam. "Then it got worse."The family says so much rain had fallen, the ground was no longer absorbing the water. That’s when the trouble started.Erin and her husband Jamas took photos of the homes all around them, some of which collapsed from the strong floodwaters.The only bridge in and out of the small town of Hanalei was covered by several feet of water. By the end of their trip, not only had the Gwilliam family run out of food, they also needed to catch their flight.The family was almost out of time when a friend called with a plan. The plan? Big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton.Erin says her family was a little star struck. "Being in the same boat as him was a little intimidating, but he didn't let that be, it was just like hurry get on we gotta go.”Hamilton took them to safety across the river and to a dock where the family was able to drive to the airport.Erin says she is thankful the surfer came to save them from a dangerous situation. “The ocean and water is his life he was so comfortable and confident in what he was doing, he was extremely capable, having him get you out it was a huge relief.”Due to the severe damage, Hamilton and his wife have set up a GoFundMe account to raise money. FALLBROOK (CNS) - Authorities Saturday were continuing to seek a driver who was involved in a crash with another car in Fallbrook early Friday then fled, was pursued by the other car's driver and escaped when the other driver was involved in a second crash.Officers said the driver of the Mustang was in critical condition at a hospital as a result of the crash.The dangerous chain of events began shortly before 9:40 a.m. when a brown SUV, possibly a GMC Envoy, and a Ford Mustang collided on southbound South Mission Road at Stage Coach Lane, just west of Fallbrook High School, according to information from CHP Officer Mark Latulippe.The "involved vehicles began to chase each other," Latulippe said, and the two cars initially headed south, but later turned around and continued north on South Mission Road.As the cars approached the intersection with Stage Coach Lane -- the same area where the first collision occurred -- a Honda CRV was also nearing the signal, heading west on Stage Coach.The SUV made it through the intersection, but the Mustang was struck by the CRV, which was heading into the intersection with a green light, Latulippe said.Another two cars, a Toyota Tundra and a Volvo V60, were also struck by the Mustang after the impact with the CRV.The driver of the Mustang, a 19-year-old Fallbrook man, suffered "major injuries" and was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition Friday night, Latulippe said.A female passenger in the Mustang, also 19, was being treated at Sharp Memorial Hospital for injuries described as minor.Drivers and passengers in the other cars involved in the second crash had complaints of pain, but no other injuries, according to Latulippe.It is believed the car involved in the initial crash is possibly an early 2000s GMC Envoy driven my a man. Its driver continued north on South Mission Road after the collision, and was last seen near Rocky Crest Road.The intersection of South Mission Road and Stage Coach Lane was closed for about an hour-and-a-half on Friday while officers investigated. 2085

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — An arrest has been made in connection with an Escondido house fire this week where a man was found unresponsive and later died.Jose Trinidad Romero, 32, was arrested Wednesday after his truck was stopped by police in Escondido. Investigators said they believe Romero knew the man found unresponsive in the fire, but are unsure of the exact relationship. On Oct. 4, firefighters and police responded to the fire in the 600 block of Waverly Place. The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was found inside unresponsive. Police said he had injuries consistent with being assaulted before the start of the fire.RELATED: Man dies after being found unresponsive during Escondido house fireThe man was later pronounced dead at Palomar Medical Center. The manner and cause of his death are still under investigation.Investigators say evidence at the scene pointed to the fire being deliberately set.
