The U.S. has now surpassed 17 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and has yet again recorded more than 1 million cases of the virus in less than a week, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins University.The U.S. reached the 16 million case threshold over the weekend. According to the COVID Tracking Project, the country is averaging more than 200,000 new cases of the virus every day, putting it on pace to record 1 million cases every five days.Since Oct. 30, the U.S. has recorded more than 8 million cases of COVID-19 — a number that represents 47% of all cases recorded since the virus reached the U.S. in January. The U.S. is currently in the midst of the most deadly stretch of the pandemic to date. The country surpassed 300,000 deaths linked to the virus on Monday. The summer season begins in Del Mar in less than a month, bringing with it a wealth of exciting events, but also a large influx of crowds and traffic.As one of the smallest cities in San Diego County, Del Mar has just about 4,000 people. But on any given day in the summer, more than 100,000 people could come to town. Within four months, the city hosts the San Diego County Fair, the Del Mar Horse Racing season, the Kaaboo concert weekend and also some of the busiest beaches in the area."That's part of the city's story, we're used to it," says long-time Del Mar resident Bettina Experton. "The Council knows how to handle it."The Del Mar City Council will meet Monday, May 7th, to discuss their plans for the 2018 season.They'll add ,000 to the budget for Sheriff's Department overtime. That helps put extra deputies on patrol to watch for petty theft, car break-ins and other small crimes near the beach. The city also adds lifeguards on busy weekends.To help defray the costs, parking is strictly enforced throughout the summer, with another officer added to patrol the meters. People have to pay for parking seven days a week in some areas, with meters going until 10 pm on weekends."We provide services for close to 5 million people a year," says Vice Mayor Dave Druker. "Somehow we need to pay a little bit of those services through our parking enforcement. The racial justice movement is inspiring hope and change.Two of the oldest hate fighting and civil rights nonprofits are joining forces to build ties between Black and Jewish people.“You can’t really fight one kind of hate unless you're going to fight all of them, right, so we can’t be saying anti-Semitism is bad and not be engaged right now in this great movement to challenge systemic racism,” said Shira Goodman with Anti-Defamation League Philadelphia.The Anti-Defamation League and National Urban League are kicking off the partnership in Philadelphia.They're starting a voting rights project trying to energize young voters.They're using young leaders from both groups to recruit younger poll workers and produce mailers and social media videos encouraging people to exercise one of the greatest tools to change.“We want to be able to give people accurate information and also hold each other accountable by having a voting plan, maybe having a buddy they are going to text back and forth, ‘did you go to the polls did you request your ballot?’”Philadelphia is just the start of this partnership for equality. They're looking at future projects to promote economic empowerment, equal access to justice, update hate crime laws and address discrimination in housing and employment.“It’s building on our shared histories as Blacks and Jews of having worked together, having both struggled in America and also saying we want to not sit on that history, we want to build a new future together,” said Goodman.The partnership and focus come at critical time for minorities which tend to face more voter suppression. 1624

The United States Secret Service said on Monday that following an investigation that closed several streets near the White House due to a suspicious package left in the area of Pennsylvania Avenue and Lafayette Park, the package was deemed "safe."The Secret Service said at 5:40 p.m. ET that H Street NW between 15th and 17th, Pennsylvania Ave between 15th and 17th, and the White house North Fence Line are closed.By 6:10 p.m., the Secret Service allowed streets near the White House to reopen after deeming the package as safe. 592
