SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The second phase of the San Diego's styrofoam ban went into effect Friday. Local restaurants are ditching styrofoam for environmentally friendly products. Customers will see more sustainable items made from paper and aluminum. The transition to more sustainable produces also comes with a price. "It's a little more expensive but we understand why we have to do it," said Maggie Rojas from Giorgino's Cheesesteaks in Golden Hill. "Little by little we started the transition, so we didn't wait until the last minute to do it.""We all care about the environment so we want to help out," said Rojas. "It’s a big problem."There are some exceptions to the rules. Grocery stores will be able to use styrofoam trays for packaging raw meat, fish and poultry through 2021. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego State University Aztecs football team will play its 2021 home games in Carson due to construction of the team's new stadium in Mission Valley.Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson will be the site for Aztec home matchups in the spring and fall of next year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Aztecs' 2020 football season was pushed into spring 2021.Although the spring schedule has yet to be announced by the Mountain West Conference, the Aztecs' fall 2021 slate includes seven home games, including matchups with Utah, Boise State, Fresno State, New Mexico, Nevada, New Mexico State and Towson.SDSU Athletic Director John David Wicker said, “Once the sale of the site was finalized with the city and we knew we could play football in Aztec Stadium in fall 2022, based on all the information we had gathered, it became clear the existing stadium had to come down in the first quarter of 2021. Our intention had been to play a final season in SDCCU Stadium. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has forced our hand and we must move the spring 2021 games as well.”In a news release, the athletic department said: "SDCCU Stadium will be replaced by a new stadium as part of the SDSU Mission Valley project. In addition to a 35,000-seat state-of-the-art multipurpose stadium for Aztec football, the project also includes a vibrant, mixed-use development that is transit-oriented, and will expand the university’s educational, research, entrepreneurial, and technology transfer programs. SDSU Mission Valley will also include transit, retail, housing, and the development of more than 80 acres of community parks and open space, including the 34-acre River Park."Construction on the new stadium site in Mission Valley is expected to be completed by fall 2022.Opened in 2003, the 27,000-seat Dignity Health Sports Park has played host to National Football League, XFL, Major League Soccer and World Cup championship events. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The remains of a 79-year-old man found in a fire pit on Fiesta Island have been identified.The remains were identified as Elias Rene Rodriguez, of San Diego, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner. Rodriguez's remains were discovered by a passerby on Oct. 29 at about 10:30 a.m. on the east side of Fiesta Island. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The world's only two platypuses to live outside of Australia now call the San Diego Zoo Safari Park home.The zoo recently received the two platypuses — a male named Birrarung that hatched in 2011 and female named Eve that hatched in 2004 — from Taronga Zoo Sydney. The animals were flown to San Diego in crates specially designed for platypuses, according to San Diego Zoo Global.Here the two animals will live in the Safari Park's Walkabout Australia habitat, where a special home has been constructed for them.RELATED: San Diego Zoo's endangered tree kangaroo joey emerges from mother's pouchPlatypuses are semi-aquatic animals that live in freshwater habitats. In San Diego, the zoo says they will be ambassadors for the species outside of their native Australia and advocate the "importance of freshwater for both humans and wildlife."Australian conservationists have been working to determine the status of the animal in the wild using environmental DNA, or trace DNA found in their habitats.“Overall, platypuses were detected at 38 percent of sites sampled in Victoria and 32 percent of those in New South Wales,” said Josh Griffiths, a senior wildlife ecologist. “Although it is still too early to draw many conclusions from this raw data, some trends are emerging. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Police Department is preparing for the possibility of big demonstrations on and around Election Day. "We don't have any credible information to say that there's going to be civil unrest or large protests groups out on Election Day or soon thereafter on Election Day. However, we have been in contact with other cities throughout the United States. We've been in contact with our federal partners throughout the United States. We're preparing for possible unrest to occur on Election Day and afterward," said SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi.SDPD will not reveal exact staffing levels but said that officers will be ready to handle the calls. Lt. Takeuchi added that SDPD has nine stations throughout the city and it’s up to each station's captain to determine appropriate staffing levels for the election. He said that officers are mindful of concerns surrounding the ballots and the pandemic. “As humans, when you don't know your future, I think it brings out a little bit of anxiety and so I think that we are aware of that and the emotions,” Takeuchi added.Sean Eldridge, with Protect the Results, told ABC10 News his group is focused in part on preparing several upcoming rallies in San Diego and beyond.“Part of our work at Protect the Results is to encourage every American to be patient and realize that it could take days if not longer before we know the full count of this election,” said Eldridge. "We have nearly 400 pre-planned events across the country which could happen as early as the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 4, the day after Election Day, if Trump were to try to undermine the election results.”Eldridge says that participants are being encouraged to remain peaceful.Lt.
