Not since 2005 has the Atlantic basin seen so many storms in a hurricane season. The year 2020 now eclipses the old record, with at least 12 of those storms making landfall this year in the U.S. alone.“Those two years are quite similar. They are anomalies,” said Lewis Link, a professor at the University of Maryland who studies hurricanes. An increasing number of hurricanes are becoming major ones, which means their wind speed falls into a Category 3 hurricane or higher.“Partially, it could be attributed to warming, higher sea surface temperatures, which are the fuel for generating hurricanes,” Link said. It’s not just coastal areas that bear the brunt of concern during hurricanes. More and more often, the effects from these storms may hit the coast first, but they are being felt far more inland and in many more states than ever before.A recent map put together by the National Hurricane Center showed all the counties impacted by hurricanes and tropical storm winds this year. The effects of those storms reached inland states like Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia and Vermont.Yet, the effects from these storms go beyond just high winds.“The biggest problem we have is with flooding, is inland flooding,” Link explained. "And some of that is attributed to tropical systems that continue to dump a lot of rain, long after they cross the shoreline.”That’s an issue, he said, because many areas don’t have the infrastructure in place to deal with the heavy, quick downpours that are associated with tropical systems.“Not only are they old, but they’re just not up to the task. That’s a serious problem. How do you change that?” Link said. “We’re not set up well to change our infrastructure based on changing conditions.”It is a change that may have some communities rethinking exactly what it means to be in a hurricane zone. While the official hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, occasionally some tropical storms do develop outside those dates, including some that formed this year in May. Despite that, experts say there are no moves at the moment to expand the dates of the hurricane season. 2132

One day after a young girl was struck by a foul ball at Yankee Stadium, players are calling on MLB to expand netting at all stadiums. Currently, just five of 30 MLB stadiums have netting that cover sections closer to the dugouts, despite a 2015 safety recommendation to expand netting from dugout to dugout. Currently in the majority of MLB stadiums, the netting provides protection for field-level seats behind home plate, exposing fans who sit behind the dugouts. Although a number of minor league stadiums have upgraded netting, the majority of MLB stadiums have not followed suit. The young girl struck by a foul ball on Wednesday was sitting behind the third base dugout. After Wednesday's incident, some players are left wondering, "What will it take" to expand netting. "I don't care about the damn view of a fan or what,'' Twins second baseman Brian Dozier told reporters after the game. "It's all about safety. I still have a knot in my stomach."MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said on Thursday that the league would once again discuss expanding netting. "The events at yesterday's game involving a young girl were extremely upsetting for everyone in our game," Manfred told ESPN's Bob Ley. "Over the past few seasons MLB has worked with our clubs to expand the amount of netting in our ballparks. In light of yesterday's event, we will redouble our efforts on this important issue."One stadium that is planning to expand netting is Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. "The existing netting meets Major League Baseball’s recommended guidelines, and the new netting will go beyond the standards established by the Commissioner’s Office," the Reds said in a statement. 1728

Now that the election is over and the transition has begun, one question is relevant: What could President-elect Biden actually change in this country?HOW MUCH POWER DO DEMOCRATS HAVE?We won't know the true power of a Biden presidency until January 5th, when Georgia will hold two Senate runoff elections. Because Republicans are poised to have 50 seats in the Senate at least, Democrats would have to sweep the Georgia races to also get 50 votes. Vice President-elect Harris would be the tie-breaking vote. If the Democrats sweep, Biden's power would increase greatly, especially if Democrats consider rule changes to the filibuster DIVIDED GOVERNMENTAt this moment, Republicans are favored to win at least one seat in Georgia, which means divided government is likely. That would mean passing major progressive legislation, like D.C. statehood, climate change or the public option, would be impossible under Senator Mitch McConnell's leadership. Immigration reform and COVID-19 economic relief legislation would be possible, though, under divided government. EXECUTIVE ORDERSPresident-elect Biden's greatest power would likely be with executive orders. Biden could issue orders such as re-joining the Paris Climate Agreement and the World Health Organization. DACA would also be temporarily saved. 1308
