SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With the rapid growth of plant-based meats across the country, businesses in San Diego have been expanding to meet demand.Plant Power, a San Diego-based vegan fast-food chain, announced it would be expanding to four new locations in Southern California in the next 16 months.Founded in 2016, Plant Power currently has locations in Ocean Beach, Encinitas, Redlands, SDSU and Long Beach. The new sites will be in Riverside, Orange County, the Inland Empire and another in San Diego, bringing it to a total of nine locations.Last month, they also debuted a new food truck in Los Angeles.“Consumers are enthusiastic about embracing a healthier, more sustainable take on traditional fast food,” said Mitch Wallis, President and Co-CEO of Plant Power Fast Food.“Fast food doesn’t have to be unhealthy for our bodies or bad for the planet. We’re here to demonstrate that there’s a better way,” he added.The plant-based craze hasn’t been contained just to vegan eateries. Supermarkets and other restaurants have begun offering meat substitutes, creating a fast-growing market for plant-based patties.Two companies have emerged as market leaders, Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods. But a San Diego company has also been positioning itself for success.Before the Butcher recently announced it has started selling its products nation-wide at stores like Ralphs and Lucky’s.Before the Butcher offers a line of plant-based meats called UNCUT. The target audience isn’t necessarily vegans.“We estimate more than 80 percent of our consumers are actually meat eaters,” said Danny O’Malley, President of Before the Butcher. 1632
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Traffic was blocked Wednesday near the San Diego Superior Court Central Courthouse due to a hazmat investigation. The San Diego Sheriff’s Department confirmed the substance was found in the building at 1100 Union St. about 5 p.m. A court employee said the substance was a white powder found on the 10th floor.Preliminary information from the scene indicates the situation was linked to a letter inside the courthouse, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. By 6:30 p.m., crews determined the powder was harmless. 537
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With the March 2020 Presidential Primary approaching, the San Diego Registrar of Voters is urging everyone to make sure they are registered properly."This one election is the most complex elections for administrators like ourselves and voters that are out there," says Registrar Michael Vu.With six political parties holding presidential primaries, plus the dozens of overlapping state and local district elections, Vu expects to create more than 12,000 unique versions of the ballot. Rules on who can vote in each party make it even more complicated.In December, Vu's office sent out more than 500,000 mailers to voters to make sure they know the options.Anyone registered with a specific party will only be allowed to vote in that party's primary. Republicans will vote for the Republican candidates, Democrats for Democrats and so on.But, right now more then 30 percent of registered voters in San Diego are listed as "No-Party Preference."For those people, they can choose to vote in the primary for American Independent, Democrat, or Libertarian parties. They cannot vote in the Republican, Green, or Peace and Freedom parties."It makes it a little more confusing," says Vu. "Something that voters need to know what political party status they are in. And if it’s different from the presidential candidates they want to vote for, they need to register or re-register now."To help voters navigate their options, the Registrar has set up a website where people can get all the information they need.The deadline to choose a party, or to choose which primary you want to vote in, is January 6."If you’re a non-partisan voter, now is the time to act," says Vu. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two weeks ago, the county warned San Diegans to continue practicing social distancing, washing of hands, and wearing facial coverings over the Labor Day weekend to thwart the spread of COVID-19.County public health officials had been clear that they did not want to see the same case spikes that followed July 4th and Memorial Day.Now that Labor Day has passed, local doctors say they have yet to see the same spike in coronavirus cases seen after holidays earlier this summer."We have not seen a sustained rate of 30, 40, 60 positives like we did around July 4. We're not seeing it yet," said Dr. David Pride, an infectious disease specialist at UC San Diego.Pride says the difference may be due to residents being more educated about the virus and how to best slow the spread. For the other two holidays, schools were also still closed.According to the county, 10 days after July 4 the region's positivity rate was 6.3%. Currently, the county's positivity rate is 4.4%."We're 10 days out, no big jump so far, our positivity rates suggest that something is different this time and hopefully that will continue for a week or two," Pride said.While San Diego County's positivity rate is low, it's the region's case rate (cases per 100,000 residents) that continues to be an issue. And now, it's the county's case rate that threatens to push the region's into a stricter reopening tier."This time around they're not sitting home, they're not socially distancing, so we're gonna see spikes that are largely unrelated to the Labor Day weekend," says Pride.And with more fall holidays approaching, Pride says residents will need to continue their vigilance through the holidays as spikes in cases are more likely. 1735
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Typically dry and brown swaths of San Diego County are currently lush and green due to record-setting levels of rain, indicating the availability of more vegetation with the potential to fuel a wildfire during drier years. To watch for the threat from growing brush and grass, Cal Fire and other agencies track fuel moisture, the amount of water in a plant. When fuel moisture is high, fires do not ignite quickly - or at all, according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association. Fires spark easily and spread fast when fuel moisture is low. Any fuel moisture content level below 30 percent indicates the brush is dead and at the mercy of temperatures, humidity and winds, NOAA reports. The calculations are critical for firefighters when Santa Ana conditions arrive and San Diego’s winter storms are a distant memory. “A direct relationship to this rain is how damp that brush is throughout the summer, or how high it is,” said Cal Fire Captain Jon Heggie. “Think of it as a sponge and it’s full of water right now,” said Heggie. “We’ll monitor that throughout the year and as we get closer to the heat of the summer we’ll really pay attention to what those levels are. Once they hit certain thresholds, that’s when we know fire danger is really at its highest.” Fuels were critically dry before San Diego County’s Cedar Fire in 2003, the U.S. Forest Service and California Department of Forestry reported. Humidity levels monitored at the Descanso Fire Station dropped to 4 percent, with the fire moisture level of the brush plunging to the same low. To make the situation worse, the county had experienced several years of below-normal rainfall. Although chaparral and coastal scrub were the most likely to burn in the Cedar Fire, Heggie called grass a “huge contributor” to fire growth in California. Heggie’s assertion echoes what climate change scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, San Diego State University and other local research outlets discovered about fire fuel. “One climactic variable that has become important in recent years is high prior-year precipitation, likely due to its role in promoting higher abundance of annual grasses that, once dry, become extremely ignition prone in the subsequent year,” the group wrote in a study about the ecological impacts of climate change. Heggie, who has been fighting fires in San Diego County for 25 years, has noticed the changing weather patterns. “I’ve seen conditions gradually get worse for probably the last decade; what that tells me is that the landscape is reacting to those ten years of drought.” To alleviate the threat, fire agencies routinely conduct brush mitigation activities including controlled burns and, on occasion, using goats to eat through unwieldy vegetation. “There’s so much fuel, we are doing our best to stay in front of it, but the tremendous amount of fuel on the landscape is going to take decades for us to really get a handle on,” said Heggie. Cal Fire increased the amount of controlled burns planned for 2019, but Heggie says preventing fire is key. He encourages San Diegans to clear the brush around their homes and be careful on high fire danger days. “Our new normal is that we always have potential for that large fire to break out anyplace here in San Diego County.” 3325
