HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colorado — The parents of a teenager shot and killed at STEM School Highlands Ranch in Colorado on Tuesday say their son was a hero, and they want the public to know what a great kid he was.John Castillo confirmed Wednesday that his son, Kendrick Castillo, was the 18-year-old killed in the shooting that left eight others injured.“I want people to know about him,” John Castillo said through tears.Kendrick Castillo was a senior at STEM School and Friday would have been his last day of school. Photos from social media show the young man participating in competitions with the school’s robotics team and posing with friends before attending his first prom.Castillo was killed when two students entered STEM School armed with handguns just before 2 p.m. Tuesday and opened fire. Eight students were injured and three students remained in area hospitals Wednesday morning, officials said.Authorities said they had two suspects in custody — an adult male and a juvenile.STEM School Highlands Ranch will be closed for at least the rest of the week, the district said Tuesday night. Other Douglas County schools are open Wednesday but have extra security on-site. If inventor Reuben Brewer’s prototype goes mainstream, we may all be pulled over by robotic police officers one day.Brewer’s invention called the GoBetween is essentially a robotic arm attached to the front driver’s side of his vehicle—acting as a police cruiser—and would extend forward toward the driver side window of a car that an officer has pulled over. On the other end of the arm is a module complete with audio and visual chat screen so the officer and driver can communicate. “It’s essentially FaceTime on a stick,” Brewer jokes. The device scans for a driver’s license and registration. It can even print out the ticket.“The overarching idea is a robot that goes between the police car and a motorist’s car, so the officer doesn’t physically have to go up to the motorist’s window,” Brewer says.Brewer says he’d seen too many headlines about police stops turning deadly, most notably the death of Minnesota driver Philando Castile in 2016.“For years. it had been story after story on the news about people being shot by police during traffic stops and vice versa,” Brewer says, describing the impetus for the invention. “If you can keep the person out of harm’s way and send a robot, that would be a win.”The robot, of course, wouldn’t be making arrests, but simple traffic violations could be issued, including a printed physical ticket. That would all happen from the module positioned next to the driver’s window.Critics have said this does nothing to solve the fraught relationship between the public and the police, and that this device, if picked up by police departments, would merely be a Band-Aid solution. Brewer wouldn’t disagree.“Every year that you don’t put a Band-Aid on, you’ve got 100 people dead and you’ve got 200,000 people that had physical force or assault used on them,” Brewer says in response. “So, I vote for the Band-Aid now, while other people figure out the solution.”But there is one feature on the GoBetween that’s gotten more chuckles than anything else: the police-style helmet attached to the top of the video chat monitor.“It looks awesome,” Brewer says, laughing. “That’s the only purpose.”Right now, the GoBetween is just a proof-of-concept device, and Brewer is currently working on a second prototype. Federal regulators head to Capitol Hill Wednesday following weeks of revelations about problems with the fatally flawed Boeing 737 Max, and as the world awaits a software fix and revised training program from the aircraft's manufacturer.The Federal Aviation Administration's current acting administrator, Daniel Elwell, is expected to face questions from lawmakers about how the Max was certified, and what steps will be taken to assure a skittish flying public that the aircraft can safely return to the skies.The Trump administration's nominee for the job, Stephen Dickson, will testify at a separate hearing. Dickson is a former Delta Air Lines executive and military pilot, and has not yet publicly commented on the 737 MAX or its grounding, which occurred days before his nomination was announced. In a Senate questionnaire prior to the hearing, Dickson identified safety as one of his qualifications for and priorities on the job.The FAA is waiting on Boeing to complete a software update for its review. The 737 Max 8 and 9 were grounded worldwide after a second crash in Ethiopia two months ago that investigators have described as appearing similar to an October crash into the Java Sea. Between the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines crashes, 346 people were killed.When Elwell testified in late March, about two weeks after the Ethiopian crash, he defended the agency's process for grounding the plane. Other countries that acted days earlier, he said, without the data that the FAA waited for.Since then, news reports have revealed how the FAA certification process allowed Boeing officials with authority delegated from the FAA to certify their company's own work.Elwell will be joined by the agency's executive director of aircraft certification, Earl Lawrence, and two officials from the National Transportation Safety Board, which represents the United States in the Indonesian and Ethiopian investigations.Preliminary reports on both crashes have implicated a flight control system that Boeing designed to operate in the background, making the 737 Max fly like earlier versions of the workhorse jetliner. Maintaining enough similarities between the planes avoided costly pilot training programs, a fact Boeing touted as a selling point.But that computerized stability program -- the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, or MCAS -- received faulty sensor readings in both the Lion Air and Ethiopian jets, and repeatedly pushed the planes' noses downward, and ultimately into steep dives. The pilots' attempts to overcome it were unsuccessful. As is standard practice, the preliminary reports did not lay blame for either accident.The emergency flight procedure Boeing says pilots should rely on when the system malfunctions has not been substantially updated since the 1960s and is now under FAA review, CNN recently reported.But Boeing admitted its software could be improved to break what it described as links in the chains of events that ended in the crashes.Boeing did not perform a flight test of a scenario where the system malfunctioned, CNN has reported. 3100
