BOULDER CITY, Nev. – What was supposed to be a routine bike ride turned into deadly crash in Nevada.Thursday morning, a box truck plowed into a group of bicyclists on U.S. 95, killing five of them.At least three other bicyclists were injured. One was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition from the scene south of Boulder City. Another one was transported by ambulance and is in serious condition. The third bicyclist suffered minor injuries.Troopers with Nevada Highway Patrol say the driver of the box truck was not hurt and is cooperating with police. They don’t believe at this time that the driver was impaired.The bicyclists did have a safety car with them at the time of the incident. However, one group of cyclists was in front of the car and the other was behind. It is not known which group was struck.“I don’t even know. It’s just the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life," said former Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer Michael Anderson.He was collecting his thoughts after a horrific day. Five of his fellow bicyclists were killed after that box truck struck their group.“Try to contact their families... I don’t even know how to say it to them,” he said.Anderson says the wind caused part of the group to get behind a safety vehicle to protect themselves when the box truck hit them. BRUCE, Wis. -- A school district in Wisconsin has made the decision to ban backpacks after multiple threats were discovered this week.WEAU-TV in Eau Claire, Wisconsin reports that a BB gun and several knives were located in a backpack at a school in Bruce Wednesday after a student scratched graffiti on a bathroom stall door. That student was taken into custody and has been suspended indefinitely.Earlier in the week, on Monday, there was a separate incident involving 'violent threats' made toward the school, WEAU says.With those threats in mind, Bruce Public Schools announced in a call to parents that backpacks would no longer be allowed at either the middle school or high school."Due the circumstances this week, no backpacks are allowed in middle school and high school as recommended by the sheriff’s department. All athletic gym bags will be searched before entering school," the district said in a Facebook post.The district's superintendent tells WEAU that in addition to the backpack ban, there will be a new entrance procedure when students comes back from spring break as well.  1123

(AP) — Berkeley’s first-in-the-nation ban on natural gas in new construction may end up eroding the region’s reputation for fine and creative dining, according to a California trade association suing the city on behalf of restaurants.In its lawsuit filed Thursday in U.S. District Court for Northern California, the California Restaurant Association argues that Berkeley bypassed state and federal regulations when it approved the ban.And while the ban currently applies only to some new construction, the association worries that it could be the start of efforts to outlaw or restrict the use of natural gas in existing structures.The trade group says such a move would harm restaurants that rely on gas “for cooking particular types of food, whether it be flame-seared meats, charred vegetables, or the use of intense heat from a flame under a wok,” according to the lawsuit.“Indeed, restaurants specializing in international foods so prized in the Bay Area will be unable to prepare many of their specialties without natural gas,” the lawsuit states.Berkeley approved its legislation in July to cheers from environmentalists. It goes into effect Jan. 1. Other cities are considering similar legislation to go electric to fight global warming.Professional chef Robert W. BARTOW, Fla. — Police say two middle school girls, who worship Satan, armed themselves with knives in a foiled plot to violently kill classmates and drink their blood at school on Tuesday.The 6th and 7th-grade girls attend Bartow Middle Schol in Bartow, Florida, police say. At 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Bartow Police School Resource Officer assigned to the school was summoned to the principal's office in reference to an armed juvenile complaint.The investigation revealed that the students armed themselves with knives, and planned on attacking fellow students during the school day."Fortunately, they were intercepted by school staff hiding in a bathroom during class time prior to carrying out their plans," Bartow Police said in a press release.According to the Bartow Police Department, a student warned a teacher on Monday about one of the girl’s mentioning that “something bad” would happen in building 500 of the middle school. The superintendent said extra officers were at the school on Tuesday as a result of this warning. After one of the girl’s mother received a robo-call alerting her that her child was not in second period, she called the school to inform teachers that the child should be there.Bartow Middle School staff immediately began to search the campus. They found the two girls in a bathroom. The girls were holding a goblet which an administrator suspected was being used to drink alcohol.Once in the principal’s office, the girls were told to empty their pockets, which revealed a knife and knife sharpener. After that, their bags were searched, and several weapons including a pizza cutter and butcher knife were found on the girls. The two admitted to planning to kill students as they entered the bathroom.“They noted that they wanted to kill at least 15 people and were waiting in the bathroom to find smaller kids that they could overpower to be their victims,” Bartow Police Chief Joe Hall said. “I believe that these two small children. I’m going to call them small children, they are only 11 and 12, seriously sat down and plotted to do bodily harm to another student at school.”The police chief said that over the weekend, the two girls plotted and planned their attempt to kill fellow students at the middle school. The investigation also revealed messages between the two, detailing the plans for their attack. The last message sent between the girls stated, "Today is health lessens thank Satan we're doing this in a bit," according to an arrest report.When asked about motivation, the girls reportedly told police that they were Satan worshipers. According to police, the girls planned to drink their victims’ blood out of the goblet they were found with. They also discussed eating their victims' flesh and leaving body parts at the school's entrance before killing themselves."Killing all of these students was in hopes it would make them worse sinners ensuring that after they committed suicide ... (they) would go to hell so they could be with Satan," the arrest affidavit reads.Both juveniles were arrested and removed from the campus, their names are not being released because they are both minors. No students or adults were harmed.Police say that notices have been sent to the parents of students at Bartow Middle School informing them of the situation. 3380
