UNITED NATIONS, March 18 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday called upon the international community to render more support and provide more assistance to Afghanistan, and voiced its support for a leading coordination role by the United Nations in the reconstruction of the south Asian country.The appeal came as Li Baodong, the permanent Chinese representative to the United Nations, was speaking to a UN Security Council meeting on the current situation of Afghanistan.The international community must keep focused on Afghanistan, which is currently at a key transitional period, and increase support and assistance to enhance Afghan sovereignty and capacity for development, Li said.The international community should also step up the efforts to assist the country in strengthening its military and police forces, promoting the process of national reconciliation in the nation, he said.He said that China supports the leading coordination role played by the United Nations in helping Afghanistan in its reconstruction process.China had actively supported and participated in Afghanistan's peaceful reconstruction, he said, adding that China will continue to provide assistance to Afghanistan within its capacity.China had invited Afghan President Hamid Karzai to visit China on March 21-25, Li said, adding that he is confident that visit will achieve positive results.

"But it also eats way the competitive edge of thousands of small businesses that used to rely on cheap labor."Besides the worker scarcity, many entrepreneurs are also worrying about the skills and overall quality of their employees.Zhou Xiaoguang, president of a Yiwu-based decoration firm, remembers the dainty products he saw at an exposition in Europe. "Why can't we produce stuff like that? We can spend heavily to buy better equipment and hire better designers, but we don't have high-caliber workers at our production lines."Langsha Group, China's leading producer of socks and stockings, dropped a procurement plan last year for an Italian-made automatic packing machine that could spare the manual work of 30 workers and improve quality."No one is able to run the machine or fix it if it breaks down," said the group's president Weng Rongdi. "Our lack of training for the workers is a big problem.""Like all other Chinese manufacturing companies, we need high-caliber workers if we want to make further breakthroughs," he said.

XI'AN, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- A high-speed railway linking central China city Zhengzhou and northwestern city Xi'an, went into operation Saturday.The 505-km Zhengzhou-Xi'an high-speed railway, the first of its kind in central and western China, cut the travel time between the two cities from former more than six hours to less than two hours, said local railway authorities Saturday.The first train left Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, at 10:50 a.m. and arrived at Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province, at 1:15 p.m., said Long Jing, head of the Xi'an Railway Bureau. With a speed of 350 kilometers per hour, the high-speed Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train coded G2004 is about to leave Xi'an for Zhengzhou in Xi'an Railway Station, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, on Feb. 6, 2010.The train traveled at 350 kilometers per hour, said Long. BEIJING, March 10 (Xinhua) - A senior Chinese lawmaker said on Wednesday that legislation requiring public officials to declare their personal assets is under consideration and seen as a move to prevent corruption and improve government transparency."We are researching the issue, since the legislation requires mature consideration of all conditions," said Li Fei, deputy director of the Legislative Affairs Committee of the National People' s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee.Li noted that the legislation should be assisted by the establishment of the personal credit system, which details individuals' financial information even if assets are not declared.Premier Wen Jiabao said on March 5 that high priority should be given to fighting corruption and encouraging integrity among public officials.Leading cadres at all levels, especially high-ranking ones, must resolutely implement the central leadership's regulations on reporting their personal financial situations and property, including incomes, housing and investments, as well as the jobs held by their spouses and children, Wen said.
