The holiday season is upon us and that means Black Friday is less than a month away. While many retail experts are saying Black Friday is dead, we found that might not ring true for most shoppers.Janice Lieberman is a retail expert for Deal News and she says, “even though you will start seeing deals now they will get even lower.”Retailers are excited to get you in the holiday spirit and have you shopping in stores, not online.  Lieberman says, “they want those door busters. They want the fever. They want you to enjoy shopping, seeing other people and touching merchandise which is becoming so foreign.”However, this year a number of retailers including Home Depot, Ikea and Office Depot will remain closed on Nov. 24 and REI is even closing its stores on Black Friday.But, for the thousands of stores that will be keeping their doors open, Lieberman says, we need to get prepared before the big shopping day.“You need to get onto social media. You need to sign up with all the stores you enjoy shopping at because they will give their loyal members added deals or select deals.”If you are not about social media or even couponing, try signing up online at places like Deal News. You click on the items you want and they will send you an alert letting you know who has the lowest price.Lieberman says, “I really think if you can hold off now I know it’s not so easy but if you can hold off to Thanksgiving weekend, the day before, the day after, even Cyber Monday that’s when you’re going to see the lowest prices.”Thanksgiving Day will have the best deals for any item. Black Friday is the day to shop for electronics, toys and clothing. Cyber Monday you’ll find the lowest prices on computers, kitchenware and shoes.If you really want to save big on Black Friday, Lieberman suggests you create a list of all the items you plan to buy. The government’s leading infectious disease expert told CNN on Thursday that the NFL will need to take significant steps in order to conduct a season this fall.During an interview with CNN, Dr. Anthony Fauci said that the NFL will need to consider playing games in a “bubble,” much like how the NBA and MLS plan on resuming their seasons later this summer."Unless players are essentially in a bubble -- insulated from the community and they are tested nearly every day -- it would be very hard to see how football is able to be played this fall," Dr. Fauci told CNN. "If there is a second wave, which is certainly a possibility and which would be complicated by the predictable flu season, football may not happen this year."Dr. Fauci's comments come as several states, including Arizona and Florida have seen a jump in coronavirus cases. As of now, the NFL continues to plan on playing games in home stadiums.But decisions on moving forward will need to be made in the coming weeks, with training camp starting in a month, and preseason games in August.NFL chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills told the NFL Network that placing NFL players in a “bubble” was not realistic. The number of players and coaches employed by the NFL is considerably higher than the MLS and NBA."Dr. Fauci has identified the important health and safety issues we and the NFL Players Association, together with our joint medical advisors, are addressing to mitigate the health risk to players, coaches and other essential personnel," Sills said in a statement to the NFL Network."We are developing a comprehensive and rapid-result testing program and rigorous protocols that call for a shared responsibility from everyone inside our football ecosystem. The larger number of faster and cheaper COVID-19 tests is offering hope.Researchers at Harvard and Brown say we need about 2 million tests a day of symptomatic people and contacts to fight the spread of the virus.When you add in testing for teachers, students, nursing home residents and staff, the number is about 4.4 million.That's around four times the amount of people being tested per day, according to the COVID Tracking Project.“So, I think it's important to make sure we actually have a goal post about where the country needs to head, because the testing manufacturers need to know what that number looks like in order to make their own business and manufacturing decisions about how to scale,” said Dr. Thomas Tsai with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.Tsai says we don't have enough capacity yet with the rapid antigen tests. He says letting the supply chain drive our guidelines for testing won't get us where we need to be.He says PCR tests that take longer to come back are more accurate, but says the antigen tests are promising because we screen more often.“Think about all the information that we’ve gleaned just from the exposure at the White House in terms of the patterns over the last several days,” said Tsai. “That kind of information, that kind of action should not just be reserved for our politicians and our athletes and celebrities. That's what all Americans deserve in terms of being about to have that information to fight the pandemic.”He says testing by itself only gives you information. The Kirchner family has a lot to celebrate this holiday season. Their son, Karson, is a happy and energetic 11-month-old baby. He's come a long way since being diagnosed with a rare heart condition that will require constant vigilance. But his progress is yet another example of how, this year, doctors are making amazing strides in so many ways.Josh and Ashley Kirchner weren't sure how much time they would have with their son. At 28 weeks pregnant, they found out he had hypoplastic left heart syndrome, meaning the left side of his heart was underdeveloped."They came back with a doctor and then we're kind of like, 'This isn't good'. And the doctor told us, 'Well, we can't find part of his heart on the ultrasound'," recalled Josh Kirchner.Some research led the Kirchners to Children's Hospital Colorado, where Karson was enrolled in a study to determine if stem cells from his own umbilical cord blood could help his heart function."There's another part of stem cells that don't create new tissue but create an environment to improve the existing tissue that's there, and that's what we're doing with this particular stem cell therapy," explained Dr. James Jaggers, with Children's Hospital Colorado.Dr. Jaggers says this syndrome is the leading cause of death for children with heart defects in their first year of life. Karson's first surgery was when he was just two days old. His second to inject stem cells into his heart came a couple of months later."The mode of stem cell delivery was actual physical injection of the stem cells into the heart muscle itself. We do that in a number of different places on the heart to try and improve sort of a global function of the heart for the long term," said Dr. Jaggers.One problem the doctors faced with the second surgery was it came during the start of the pandemic when travel was shut down. The Kirchners drove six hours from their home in South Dakota, but the stem cells had to be driven from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota to Denver, a more than 12-hour drive.Karson still needs one more surgery, which doctors say will be when he's 2 or 3 years old. His parents know there's no roadmap for this. And while they wait to see how his body responds, they want to enjoy every moment."We get to enjoy our little boy and kind of live in the moment a little better and not have to worry about that hanging over our head. We know it's coming. But, like they said to do, don't worry about it. When it comes, it comes," said Josh Kirchner.Dr. Jaggers says the second phase of the study is done. Karson was the 16th to be accepted into it. The next phase will also include the use of stem cells in the third surgery. Dr. Jaggers says preliminary data shows some improved heart function.
