SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - US Coast Guard officers will be out in full force over the holiday weekend. They've launched Operation Dry Water to help cut down on the number of arrests for people boating under the influence of drugs or alcohol."We want everybody to have a great time and do it in a safe manner," says Lt. Commander Ellen Motoi, the Chief of Enforcement for the San Diego Sector of the Coast Guard."We're going to have a lot more boats out there from the local side, as well as Harbor Police. They'll be promoting safety and looking for boaters under the influence," says Motoi.Alcohol is the leading cause of boating accidents, according to the Coast Guard. They look for erratic speed, dangerous course headings and boats coming too close to other vessels as warning signs that someone may be drunk while operating a boat.Operation Dry Water is a nationwide program. In 2018, they made 494 BUI arrests and issued 7,305 other citations.Like driving, the legal limit for alcohol while operating a boat is .08. Anyone arrested for BUI could face jail time, a loss of their license/credentials and a hefty fine.Aside from BUI, Motoi says the emphasis of Operation Dry Water focuses on safety."It's not worth it," says Motoi. "We encourage everyone to think twice before you get on a boat."Motoi says the most common mistake people make is not to wear a life jacket. The Coast Guard says 80% of all drownings happen because people aren't wearing one.The Coast Guard also wants boaters to know they shouldn't shoot off flares or fireworks from their boats. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across California, a record-breaking 3.7 million acres have already burned in more than 8-thousand wildfires this year.Both Cal Fire San Diego and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department are preparing to respond to potential fire disasters, as dangerous weather conditions return to San Diego County.“We know the potential is there,” said Thomas Shoots, a public information officer for Cal Fire. “We’re holding all our firefighters on duty, and we’re staffing on every piece of equipment to make sure we’re covered, we’ve brought on contract dozers. We’ve asked that the other agencies that we work with here in the county provide resources, and they stepped up, and we’re very appreciative of that.”San Diego Fire-Rescue has also increased staffing and equipment.The National Weather Service extended a Red Flag Warning to Tuesday at 5 p.m. for the inland valleys and mountains.A heat advisory will also be in effect Tuesday through Thursday.Just weeks ago, the Valley Fire destroyed homes and charred more than 16 thousand acres in the East County.With similar weather conditions, fire crews hope community members will try to reduce the possibility of a fire sparking.“If everybody could do their part, anything they can think of that can start a fire, whether its dragging chains down the highway, clearing brush with metal motors, please be extra cautious,” said Shoots.SDG&E warned 700 customers in the backcountry of the possibility of Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) but sent the all-clear to most customers by Monday afternoon.However, 19 customers in Descanso may still be impacted by PSPS overnight into Tuesday. 1651

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two guided-missile destroyers were simultaneously dry docked at a Barrio Logan shipyard Wednesday. The USS Stethem and USS Decatur were lifted together inside the BAE Systems’ “Pride of California” dry dock. The dry-dock is 950 feet long, 160 feet wide and has a lifting capacity of 55,000 tons. The destroyers each are 505-feet-long and displace about 9,000 tons, according to BAE Systems. Crews will conduct repairs on the ships’ hulls, internal ballast and storage tanks, ventilation, propulsion and engineering systems, and living spaces. The ships should be re-floated by April 2020, BAE systems reports. 636
