SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The historic Hotel del Coronado is reopening Friday, ending the first closure in the hotel's 132-year history.The famous red-roofed hotel on Coronado Island's Orange Avenue closed with other hotels in late March as the COVID-19 pandemic reached San Diego.Hotels have started to reopen in June, following state and county public health guidelines. The Hotel del Coronado, a major tourist attraction, will reopen with limited amenities and reduced occupancy.Hotel del Coronado General Manager Harold Rapoza told 10News guests and hotel staff can expect to feel safe and comfortable after numerous modifications."We disinfect all the high-touch areas, including the light switches, remote control, door handles. We sanitize the entire room, and then we put a seal on the outside of the door so when guests do check in, they know that no one has accessed the room. They are the first person to access the room since it was cleaned and disinfected," Rapoza said.Rapoza added face coverings/masks will be required for all hotel staff and guests while in public areas. He also said there will be sanitation stands and cleaning wipes around the resort.Rapoza said as soon as they learned the hotel would be allowed to reopen, staff worked "fast and furious" to meet new health and safety guidelines."This is a very busy resort in the summer. There's a lot of foot traffic and we wanted to make sure we could manage through the guidelines. We want everyone to come and enjoy the Del and see the Del this summer. We're excited to show them our new amenities and our new protocols," he told 10News.The luxury villas the Beach Village at The Del will also open Friday. The hotel's main pool and Cabana guestrooms will remain closed until at least July 19 until upgrades are completed.Until the pool reopens, hotel management said guests will be able to borrow sand chairs for the beach and umbrellas for free. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Police Department conducted a bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operation Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Officers focused on enforcing safety laws involving motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians in the Northern Division, which includes Clairemont, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, La Jolla and University City. They looked for drivers who were speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs and signals, failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, or any other violations. They also searched for pedestrians who crossed the street illegally or failed to yield to drivers who have the right of way. Pedestrians should cross the street only in marked crosswalks or at intersections. Police have investigated several collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians during the past three years. In 2013, California had 701 pedestrian deaths, accounting for more than 23 percent of all roadway fatalities. The national average is 15 percent. Police say drivers should follow these safety tips:- Look out for bicyclists, pedestrians and scooter riders, especially at night or in bad weather.- Slow down and be prepared to stop when turning or entering a crosswalk.- Stop at the crosswalk stop line to give drivers in other lanes an opportunity to see, and yield to pedestrians.- Be cautious when backing up.- Share the road with bicyclists.- California law requires at least three feet of clearance when passing a bike rider.- Look for cyclists before opening a car door or pulling out from a parking space.- Yield to cyclists at intersections and as directed by signs and signals.- Watch out for bike riders when making turns.Tips for pedestrians:- Cross at crosswalks or intersections, and obey signs and signals.- Walk facing traffic.- Don't text or talk on a cell phone while walking.- Make eye contact with drivers as they approach.- Wear bright clothing during the day and reflective materials, or use a flashlight, at night.- Look left-right-left before crossing a street.Tips for scooter riders:- Wear properly fitted helmets.- Riders are considered vehicle operators; they are required to obey the same rules of the road as other vehicle operators, including obeying traffic signs, signals, and lane markings.- When riding a scooter in the street, cyclists must ride in the same direction as traffic.- When riding at night, scooter riders are required to have a front light and a red reflector to the rear- No passengers are allowed on any scooter. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gulls coach Dallas Eakins was Monday named the coach of its NHL parent team, the Anaheim Ducks.Eakins coached the Gulls throughout their four seasons in the American Hockey League, guiding them to a 154-95-23 record and three Calder Cup playoff berths. They reached the Western Division finals in the recently concluded 2018-19 season.The Gulls had the best record in the AHL's Pacific Division since its inception in the 2015-16 season.The 52-year-old Eakins called his hiring as the Ducks' coach ``a tremendous honor for my family.''``I am truly humbled,'' Eakins said. ``It was a privilege to serve as head coach of the San Diego Gulls during our first four seasons and I look forward to build off that success here in Anaheim.''Eakins replaces Randy Carlyle, who was fired on Feb. 10.
