SIRTE, Libya, March 27 (Xinhua) -- China expects that the Arab summit in Libya can coordinate the inter-Arab relations and make achievements in the Palestinian cause, a senior Chinese diplomat said here on Saturday."We hope the Arab countries could coordinate internal relations and achieve positive results in reconciliation among Palestinian factions as well as the resumption of Palestinian-Israeli talks at the summit," said China's Special Envoy to Middle East Wu Sike in an interview with Xinhua on the sidelines of the 22nd Arab Summit in the Libyan city of Sirte.As a special representative of Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Wu attended the opening ceremony of the summit at the invitation of the Arab League Secretariat. He transmitted a letter of Chinese President Hu Jintao to the Arab leaders."I will convey a strong message of China that we attach great importance to relations with the Arab world, and wish to promote further developments of such relations in the future," Wu said.Wu said China and the Arab world have a long history of friendly relationship. NAIROBI, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Somali pirates have hijacked a Taiwan fishing boat off the Horn of Africa nation coast with 26 crew members, a regional maritime official confirmed on Saturday.Andrew Mwangura, East Africa coordinator of Seafarers Assistance Program, said the ship's owner lost contact with the Tai Yuan 227 two days ago north of the Seychelles as it headed for the Maldives. "The fishing boat lost contacts two days ago and has 26 crew members from China, Kenya, Taiwanese and Mozambique. We received the reports on Friday and it seemed the hijack took place two or three days ago," Mwangura told Xinhua by telephone.The International Maritime Bureau has also confirmed the hijack.Pirate attacks off the Somali coast have continued despite the presence of several warships, deployed by navies of the NATO, the European Union, Russia, China, South Korea and India in the region to protect cargo and cruise ships against piracy.Kenya's proximity to Somalia prompted insurance companies to hike up their premiums for ships traveling to Kenyan ports to mitigate the increased insecurity.This led shipping companies to take the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope traveling to the Kenyan ports, with cost of doing business on the Kenyan coast going up by over 40 percent.To date more than 100 suspects have been transferred to Kenya by the Western warships patrolling the Indian Ocean to combat piracy.It is only Kenya and the Seychelles in the region that have agreed to take in suspects for prosecution, but both have recently complained about the burden of trying and jailing pirates in their countries.

BEIJING, April 22 (Xinhua) -- A leading Chinese government think tank Thursday forecast the country's 2010 economic growth would top the 8-percent target set by the central government by almost 2 percentage points.The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) forecast China's gross domestic product (GDP) would expand by 9.9 percent this year, 1.2 percentage points higher than last year's growth rate.Its forecast is higher than the 9.6-percent economic growth predicted by the Asian Development Bank earlier this month.Fixed assets investment would rise 33.3 percent year on year in 2010, said a blue book on China's 2010 economic prospects jointly released by the CASS and the Social Sciences Academic Press.The CASS said a slim chance existed of serious inflation in China this year with the consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, growing within a moderate range.The book also said the government should make economic policies more flexible and better targeted over the rest of the year, while mapping out plans to withdraw stimulus measures gradually within the next two years without jeopardizing economic growth.China's GDP grew 11.9 percent year on year in the first quarter to 8.06 trillion yuan (1.19 trillion U.S. dollars) and fixed assets investment rose 25.6 percent to 3.53 trillion yuan during the same period.The country's CPI rose 2.4 percent year on year in March, below the government target limit of 3 percent.

BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) -- The severe drought in southwest China has broken after six falls of rain in the past month, Chen Zhenlin, spokesman with the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), said here Wednesday.The rain occurred from March 22 to April 26 and ranged from 50 to 100 millimeters.The drought had parched the southern areas of Yunnan Province, the northeast regions of Guizhou Province, and the eastern and southern parts of Guangxi Province, Chen said at a briefing.The drought was among the most severe in decades, having a serious impact on people's lives and economic development.More than 20 million people and 10 million farm animals were affected by water shortages at the drought's peak.The CMA dispatched 28 teams and expert groups to drought-hit areas to enhance drought-relief work and seed clouds after the drought began last autumn.
