A Florida sheriff's office says it was able to identify a murder victim 35 years after he went missing thanks to the victim's custom belt buckle.According to the Pensacola Journal News, officials with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office said they were successfully able to identify the body of William Ernest Thompson 37 years after he went missing.The WKMG-TV in Orlando reports that the body was found Jan. 23, 1985 about 10 miles northwest of downtown Pensacola. Officials suspected that the man had been dead for months, and possibly more than a year before it had been found.For more than three decades, the department could not find a lead in the case. The suspected murder victim was only identified as "John Doe."It wasn't until 2018, when a person searching for a missing relative, stumbled upon the case on the Escambia County Sheriff's Office (ECSO) website. Knowing their relative had last been seen in Escambia County, the person contacted the department.But authorities said they didn't truly have a lead in the case until the relative noticed the victim's belt buckle, which matched the initials of thier uncle, William Thompson."The thing that stuck out to the person the most was the victim's belt buckle with the hand-engraved initials' W.T." Chief Deputy Chip Simmons of the ECSO said in a Facebook post. "The person felt this could have been their missing uncle, whose last known location was in Escambia County near the same time John Doe's body was discovered."The relative said that while he had never been reported missing, no one in their family had spoken to their uncle, William Thompson, since 1983. Officials took a sample of the tipster's DNA, and compared with the DNA of the body. Test results confirmed the body was that of William Thompson.Thompson would have been 49 when his body was found in 1985."This is another example of the never-ending quest for justice,” ECSO Chief Deputy Chip Simmons said in a written statement. “While we haven’t yet solved the homicide, it is a step forward and can give the family some closure until the case is solved.”The case is still open and being investigated as a homicide. 2155

A family in Tennessee was able to escape their burning house thanks to their neighbor's rescue dog.The home in the Franklin, Tennessee neighborhood of Twin Oaks was seriously damaged in a fire caused by fireworks, officials say.Neighbor Jess LeCates said his 3-year-old Belgian malinois Roux was barking frantically at his front door around 10:20 p.m., about an hour after the homeowner threw fireworks near a trashcan outside, sparking the fire.Roux noticed the fire and led LeCates to the home where the roof and garage were already on fire. LeCates said he started banging on his neighbor's door to wake up the family of three and get them out of the house."I tried to put out the fire while the lady who lived there called 911," LeCates said.Thanks to Roux, everyone inside the home, including their pets, were able to escape unharmed.The Fire Marshal said the fire burned through some exterior features and much of the attic, causing an estimated ,000 in damage.Consumer fireworks are prohibited in Franklin.WTVF first reported this story. 1055

A bystander video shows the moment a demonstrator was hit by a Sacramento County Sheriff's deputy's vehicle Saturday night as people protested the shooting death of Stephon Clark.The collision happened during a vigil as a woman carrying a "Stephon Clark Rest in Power" sign walked in front of a sheriff's vehicle and motioned the driver to stop, according to a video from the National Lawyers Guild Legal Observers obtained by CNN.The deputy then drove away, said Guy Danilowitz, a legal observer who recorded the video."The vehicle accelerated and struck her, accelerated very fast and struck her violently and she fell to the ground," Danilowitz said."It was a very fast acceleration, not the way you would move with people around," he added.The woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.About eight seconds before the collision, a deputy inside the sheriff's SUV could be heard on a loudspeaker repeatedly telling protesters to "back away from my car."The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said protesters approached the vehicles and "began yelling while pounding and kicking the vehicles' exterior.""The collision occurred while the patrol vehicle was traveling at slow speeds," said Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Shaun Hampton.Hampton said the deputy's vehicle had scratches, dents and a shattered rear window following the collision."The damage to the vehicle was not a result of the collision involving the pedestrian but was caused by vandals in the crowd," Hampton said.A spokesman with the California Highway Patrol had said it is investigating the incident and would not confirm whether the incident was a hit and run. 1710

A father accused of killing his three children during a domestic dispute near Sacramento, California was arrested on Thursday, ABC News reports. Robert Hodges is in a California jail while he awaits formal charges. ABC reports that he is being held without bail until he faces a judge on Monday. The Yolo County Coroner told ABC News the children were 11 years old, 9 years old and 8 months old when they were allegedly killed by Hodges Wednesday evening. Police said that the children's mother was injured during the domestic assualt. Her injuries are unknown. Neighbors reported to dispatchers a domestic incident to police around 9 p.m. local time Wednesday. Several people who knew Hodges and the victims said they were unaware of any domestic violence in the family. "The kids seemed jolly most of the time, seemed happy. A House committee issued a scathing report Wednesday questioning whether Boeing and government regulators have recognized problems that caused two deadly 737 Max jet crashes and whether either will be willing to make significant changes to fix them.Staff members from the Transportation Committee blamed the crashes that killed 346 people on the "horrific culmination" of failed government oversight, design flaws and a lack of action at Boeing despite knowing about problems. The committee said the Max complied with FAA safety regulations even though the planes crashed in Indonesia and Ethiopia. Members say this shows a need for reforms.
