CINCINNATI — Linda Zgoda has been volunteering at Hamilton County polling places for more than 20 years. She said it's important to her."I feel like to have honest elections, you have to have good officials," Zgoda said. "I feel like it's a civic responsibility for people to work at the polls."She pays close attention to details."It was initially when we had the signature poll book that I became aware that my neighbor was still on the rolls," she said. "Then after it had been on for so long, I became curious about it."The curious thing, in this case, was the fact that her neighbor had been dead for 14 years."I'm concerned that by someone being on the rolls, someone could improperly vote in their name," Zgoda said. She contacted the Hamilton County Board of Elections and was told a family member needed to turn in her neighbor's death certificate to have that person removed."Since this has been brought to our attention, we did more research, and we've been able to obtain some more identifying information, and that person has now been canceled," Hamilton County Board of Elections director Sherry Poland said.Poland said the state and county usually do a more thorough job of removing deceased voters from the rolls, but this time was different."We did receive a deceased Ohioans report at that time (in 2004), and (it) included his name but didn't include his address," Poland said. "The report did have a date of birth, but we didn't have a date of birth on file."Poland said her office has about 790 Hamilton County voters who don't have their date of birth or identification on file because those people registered at a time when they didn't have to give that information. When asked if there might be more deceased voters on the rolls that the state might have missed, Poland said that she thought it was highly unlikely because more identifying information is required from voters now.She said that no one tried to vote under the name of Linda Zgoda's deceased neighbor in the time that it had incorrectly been listed on the rolls. The Hamilton County Board of Elections is working to get more identifying information from all voters in the county, she added. 2198

Consumers are being warned that some over-the-counter teething products for babies can pose a serious risk. The Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday that oral health products for infants containing the pain reliever benzocaine for the temporary relief of sore gums should not be marketed or sold."If companies do not comply, the FDA will initiate a regulatory action to remove these products from the market. Also, the agency is requesting that companies add new warnings to all other benzocaine oral health products to describe certain serious risks," the FDA message says.Products with benzocaine post "serious safety risks," the FDA says. They also show no real demonstrated benefit." ... The FDA is taking steps to stop use of these products in young children and raise awareness of the risks associated with other uses of benzocaine oral health products. In addition to our letters to companies who make these products, we urge parents, caregivers and retailers who sell them to heed our warnings and not use over-the-counter products containing benzocaine for teething pain."We will also continue working with Congress to modernize our over-the-counter drug monograph regulatory framework as part of our mission to protect and promote public health," the FDA says.Read more on the announcement here. 1329

Comments by Mike Milbury, an NHL broadcaster for NBC Sports, were condemned by the NHL on Friday. The league called the remarks “insensitive and insulting.”Late in Thursday’s playoff game between the Islanders and Capitals, Milbury commented, “Not even any woman here to disrupt your concentration.”Milbury was referencing a bubble setup in Toronto for Eastern Conference teams that qualified for the postseason. Outside of players and coaches, only a handful of team and league officials are allowed inside the bubble. Families were among those excluded from the bubble, which is why some players, most notably Bruins goalie Tukka Rask, decided to opt not to remain in the bubble.A similar bubble was made in Edmonton for Western Conference playoff teams.Milbury was originally slated to be on the broadcast for Friday's playoff game between Montreal and Philadelphia. He is no longer listed as part of the broadcast team. The NHL issued the following statement on Friday:"The National Hockey League condemns the insensitive and insulting comment that Mike Milbury made during last night's broadcast and we have communicated our feelings to NBC. The comment did not reflect the NHL's values and commitment to making our game more inclusive and welcoming to all."Milbury played 12 seasons with the Boston Bruins following by coaching stints with the Bruins and Islanders. 1378
