And as the trend continues, Hawthorne Country Store in Escondido has seen a resurgence in homesteading."Homesteading is a little bit like the original McGuyvering," says managing partner Heather Thelen.She says it's a lifestyle about being self-sufficient when it comes to food and agriculture."Anything from gardening, food collection, hunting, preserving cheese, and using animals for food or for other uses," Thelen said.And because of the current pandemic, everything from chickens to pickling has become very common and popular. "To think that this is something we've been reminded about with COVID. When our supply chains got interrupted, and there wasn't availability of some of the things like meats or products, we just couldn't get because we couldn't go out," says Thelen.And at Hawthorne Country Store, they are offering and education is homesteading. And how in 2020, living off the land, can be quite simple and fun. "We're doing a few classes online, as well as YouTube videos to help people," Thelen said. "We want people to have access to local help, because the videos and the television shows that are out there, are in the Midwest. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — Dr. Pat Davis stood atop the bluffs at Grandview Beach in Encinitas on Friday, holding back tears."Bear with me, please," he says. "This is only the second time I've been near the beach since the accident."That accident, on Aug. 2, 2019. His wife, Julie, daughter Annie, and sister-in-law Elizabeth were on Grandview Beach, when the bluff above them crumbled and fell, killing them.RELATED: Lawmakers hope 0K federal grant will help prevent future bluff collapse in Encinitas"Believe you me," Davis says, "It'd be a lot easier to not come down here. I came down here about a week ago for the first time in six months and it was difficult."But Davis made sure he would be there Friday, to help announce the first significant federal money devoted to help make the bluffs safer.Congressman Mike Levin announced 0,000 to start the engineering phase of the project to help prevent the tragedy from occurring again.RELATED: Community, husband of victim push for Encinitas bluff stabilization"The primary purpose of the project is to stabilize tall bluffs that erode due to high-energy storm swells and rising sea levels, posing threats to life, property and critical infrastructure," Levin said.There's still a ways to go.The project needs another roughly .5 million dollars for engineering, and it's estimated to cost million to carry out every five to 10 years. (KGTV) — Police have arrested a North County doctor accused of sexually assaulting a patient.On March 28, Escondido Police say a woman reported being sexually assaulted while unconscious by Dr. Leng Thai Ky, a 40-year-old anesthesiologist from Poway.EPD detectives investigated the woman's report over the weekend, and arrested Ky on Monday with the help of the U.S. Marshall’s Fugitive Task Force.Ky, a doctor for the last eight years, has associations with Palomar Hospital, North County Pain Institute, Sharp Community Medical Group, Graybill Medical Group, and the Desert Pain Clinic in Rancho Mirage, EPD says.Police believe there are more, unidentified victims of Ky and urge anyone with information to call EPD at 760-839-4790. 760

(KGTV) — A 12-year-old who got a hold of a firearm accidentally shot himself in the leg Friday.Escondido Police say the boy was at his home in the unincorporated area of Escondido just before 6 p.m. when he found a revolver. He started handling the firearm and a single round fired, striking him in the leg.The boy was taken to a nearby hospital with a non-life threatening injury.
