SURPRISE, Ariz. — LaRissa Waln's been waiting for the day she'd get to walk across the stage and receive her high school diploma, but she might not get the chance. The 17-year-old attends Valley Vista High School in Surprise, Arizona, and says she started decorating her cap for the ceremony more than a week ago. But just this week, school administrators said caps had to remain blank. "If I do wear it, I won't be able to walk," Waln said. Her cap though has a special meaning. Waln's father helped create the design, a tribute to their Native American culture. The cap is adorned with intricate beadwork that represents the Wahpeton Sioux tribe. "It means everything to me, to be a part of it in any way possible," she added. "We did pay for the cap and gown out of our own pockets, and we should have the right to decorate it." Administrators said it wasn't a school policy though; it's enforced district-wide. Here's Dysart Unified School District's full statement: “The Dysart Unified School District understands that graduation is an exciting time for students, and our goal is to ensure each student is appropriately recognized for successfully graduating high school. We respect the formality of our graduations and believe that decorated caps take away from the purpose of the ceremony, calling unnecessary attention to individual students. Only school-approved regalia, which is typically academic in nature, are allowed to adorn the gown. We appreciate the desire of students to honor cultural traditions, and there are many ways to do so beyond decorating a graduation cap.”Waln says she and her father have tried meeting with administrators about the issue, even asking for a written copy of the policy, but say neither the school nor the district has provided one. She also found no policies on graduation caps in the school's handbook. "I worked four years for this," Waln said. "I'll always stick with my culture no matter what. If it means I can't walk at graduation, then I guess I won't walk. But I will be there." 2046

So goes having home-field advantage? In a series which resulted in the road team winning every single game, the Washington Nationals won the winner-take-all Game 7 on Wednesday by defeating the Houston Astros 6-2. The Nationals won the series by a 4-3 margin. After Washington took the first two games played in Houston, Houston responded by winning Games 3, 4 and 5 in Washington, D.C. Facing elimination, the Nationals won Games 6 and 7 in Houston. The win marked the first ever World Series title in franchise history, including when the franchise was located in Montreal. The last time a Washington-based team won a World Series was 1924. After being sidelined with an injury for Sunday’s Game 5, Nationals’ All-Star starting pitcher Max Scherzer kept his club in Game 7 with a 5-inning, two-run effort. Then, Patrick Corbin, spurning his usual role as a starter, came out of the bullpen to hold the Astros scoreless for 3 innings. After Houston held a 2-0 lead through 6 innings, Washington responded with three runs in the 7th inning, including a Howie Kendrick home run, which gave the Nationals a 3-2 lead. In the 8th, Juan Soto singled to deliver a RBI which scored Adam Eaton. Eaton returned the favor in the 9th with a two-RBI single to center field to lift Washington to a more comfortable 6-2 lead. Though not pitching in Wednesday’s Game 7, pitcher Stephen Strasburg earned the win in two of Washington’s four World Series victories, including Tuesday’s pivotal Game 6. Strasburg was named the series' MVP."I don't know. It's almost like we've done it so many times that we have to get punched in the face to kind of wake up. I think it's just the MO. We don't quit. We never quit throughout the season despite kind of everybody saying that we were done," Straburg said. Coming into the season, despite being favored by some to win the National League East, the Nationals faced the adversity of losing 2015 MVP Bryce Harper to rival Philadelphia. Instead of winning the East, the Nationals entered the MLB Playoffs via a Wild Card. Washington gutted out a 4-3 win over Milwaukee in the Wild Card game. Then facing elimination twice in the Division Series, the Nationals won Game 4 6-1 before winning Game 5 in extra innings to win that series. Washington then went on to easily sweep the St. Louis Cardinals. "This year, I can honestly say nothing would have surprised me," Nationals manager Dave Martinez said. "I mean, from where we started, traveling "boos," you name it, we've been through a lot."But like I said before, these guys, we stuck together. They believed in each other. I believed in them. And I told them before the game, I said, Hey, I want you guys to just treat this as just another game, it's Game 184, which is hard to do. I said, But we made it this far, just play one more game. One more 1-0, and they did that tonight." 2869

R. Kelly has been denied bail in a New York criminal case that charges the musician with a racketeering scheme to sexually abuse girls.Lawyers for Kelly wanted the judge in the singer's New York federal case to reconsider and grant him bond, saying the hardships of being jailed include being able to see just one of two previous live-in girlfriends at a time."He allegedly can only see one of his girlfriends every 90 days and then the second 90 days he can see the other girlfriend and so on but he can't see both and at the same time. OK. Being in jail or prison is not being in a luxury resort where you can see whoever you want, whenever you want, however you want, in whatever conditions you want," said lawyer Gloria Allred who represents multiple alleged victims of R. Kelly.Kelly's lawyer say the singer is not being treated fairly by the court."I think that he should be out. He's not a flight risk. There's no evidence that he's a flight risk," said Steve Greenberg, one of R. Kelly's lawyers.Kelly is also charge in four different cases in Cook County, Illinois. 1086

Since the Trump administration announced it would end its practice of separating families apprehended at the southern border last June under its "zero tolerance" immigration policy, at least 245 children have been separated from their parents, according to a new court filing.Between late June 2018 and early February of this year, the administration identified 245 children who had been separated, though four of them are under additional review. The administration said the basis for the separation in the majority of cases was "criminality, prosecution, gang affiliation or other law enforcement purpose."The court document is a status report in an ongoing family separation lawsuit. The court will hold a hearing Thursday. The American Civil Liberties Union originally filed the case against the Trump administration last year on behalf of a Congolese woman, referred to as "Ms. L," who was seeking asylum in the US and was separated from her 7-year-old daughter. The case was later expanded to become a class-action lawsuit.District Judge Dana Sabraw issued a preliminary injunction last June blocking most family separations at the US-Mexico border and ordering that those already separated be reunited. As of February 13, the government has discharged 2,735 of 2,816 possible children who fell under the Ms. L lawsuit, according to Wednesday's court filing. There are also five children in the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which is required to place kids with a sponsor in the US, proceeding toward reunification "or other appropriate discharge." Four of those children have parents who are not in the US.Of the children who were separated as of last June, 62 are no longer in Office of Refugee Resettlement care, according to the court filing. It adds: "Based on the information available to date, in the 245 identified separations the parent was either excluded from the Ms. L class or was separated for a reason consistent with the Court's preliminary injunction."The government is still reviewing the cases of four separations.Plaintiffs in the case have requested additional information on the new separations. The government, per the filing, is working on putting that together. The administration has come under renewed scrutiny for the handling of separations following a 2311
