SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman who was hit by a car in Normal Heights says she’s been left stranded for six months after her wheelchair was damaged in the crash. Now, replacing it is a challenge. Pet photographer Tamandra Michaels’ love for the camera came to a pause after she was hit from behind while crossing the street.“It sent me flying," Michaels said. The wreck damaged her custom wheelchair, which cost more than ,000.“It slightly bent the frame to where one of the front wheels don’t quite hit the ground.” Michaels says Geico, the insurance company of the woman who hit her, won’t replace the wheelchair after giving them proof the chair must be replaced.“Months went by, they said they did some research and that the chair should only cost between ,500 to ,100," said Michaels. Michaels says without being able to work, she can’t afford to pay the difference.“It's incredibly frustrating. They’re treating it like its a car or maybe even a bike. This is like my legs; this is my life. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An exonerated marine colonel was denied release from the Camp Pendleton brig. Colonel Dan Wilson's release was denied three months after he was exonerated for sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl. In July, an appellate court overturned his conviction. Since then, his family has been awaiting his release. His wife spoke to 10News over the phone just moments after his release was denied. "I was shocked and I burst into tears. This man has been in for two years and 10 months," said Susan Wilson. "If they cant believe their own court of appeals then there's a problem there."His family maintains the system has been unjust from the beginning. "I just feel as though he’s getting a really bad rap by the USMC after 38 years of service and 11 deployments," said Wilson. "It's astounding to me that they pride themselves on ‘Marines take care of their own’. Well, they haven’t taken care of us whatsoever."Col. Wilson was also convicted of unauthorized leave and conduct unbecoming of an officer. He'll stay behind bars while he awaits a re-sentencing for those charges. 1100

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An El Centro teacher was arraigned Tuesday after she was accused of providing marijuana and alcohol to students on a school camping trip.Monique Garcia, 50, faces two felony charges and three misdemeanor charges garnering a maximum sentence of 8 years and 4 months in state prison, according to the District Attorney's Office.Deputy District Attorney Stephen Marquardt said a 17-year-old student on the trip gave Garcia a ride to a grocery store where she bought alcohol and then drove to a dispensary where she bought cannabis, including edibles.Marquardt said students were intoxicated and became sick after consuming the alcohol and/or cannabis.According to the Southwest High School website, Garcia was head of the math department. The Central Union High School District sent a statement to 10News reading in full: "In order to protect the integrity of the judicial process, Central Union High School District does not comment on ongoing or pending proceedings. Monique Garcia is no longer employed by the District. Due to the sensitive nature of the allegations the District will continue to respect the privacy of all those involved."Southwest High School's Outdoor Adventure Club went on a three-day camping trip in February of 2019, according to the Imperial Valley Press.IVP named Garcia as the head adviser of the club and stated she was on that trip with 29 students.The trip took place, according to IVP, at the Laguna Campground from Feb. 15-18.This is the first criminal case resulting from the newly formed Student Safety in School Systems Task Force, under the San Diego County District Attorney.Garcia will be in court for a preliminary hearing June 18.A restraining order was filed, to keep Garcia from contacting 18 individuals, whom Marquardt said she texted before and after the trip.A LinkedIn profile with the same name lists Garcia as a teacher at Southwest High School from August 2008 - present and at Gompers Charter Middle School from August of 2006 - June of 2007.The San Diego Unified School District confirmed Garcia worked at Crawford High School from Sept. 28, 2007 to June 30, 2008. 2143

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A transit security officer stabbed a man who tried to grab his service pistol at the Old Town Transit Center Friday, San Diego Police said. The encounter was reported at 1 p.m. at the station at 4009 Taylor St. Police said the armed officer was attacked by a man who “violently pulled” on the gun in the holster in an attempt to remove it. The officer kept his weapon and defended himself with his duty knife, stabbing the man in the torso, according to police. Despite his injury, the unidentified man ran away. He was later found under a nearby bridge and taken into custody, police said. The security officer had minor injuries to his face from being punched. 689

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego nurse who cares for "the sickest of the sick" babies will be honored Sunday for her extraordinary character.Around Rady Children's Hospital, Linda Black is known for her Scottish accent and knack for writing poems."Remember my fingers remember my toes, Remember my eyes so big and so brown, Remember the wind making my whole face frown," she read from one of her poems. This one was written for a baby she cared for who did not survive.She's worked at the hospital for 12 years and always knew she was a caretaker."I wanted to be a nurse because my grandmother had multiple sclerosis and she had several strokes, I used to help my aunt look after her," she said.She is the primary caretaker for one baby at a time. Sometimes the baby is there for weeks, sometimes for months. She found the silver lining in traumatic times, writing poems for the families tailored to their little angels, "basically saying to the families thank you for giving me the honor of looking after your child and your child made an impact on my life."She hopes the poems bring back positive memories for families in a dark time. The families overwhelmed with gratitude, often hugging her. One family whose child survived used her poem as a bucket-list and would send Black photos each time they checked something off the list.When she started writing poems for those who didn't make it, she was worried about the impact. Black was reassured when she ran into a family at a party. She cared for their baby and hadn't seen them since their baby passed. "On her phone was a picture of the grave and on the grave was the poem, it made me realize how my words meant so much," she said tearfully.Sunday she'll be honored at the March of Dimes Signature Chef's Gala for her extraordinary character."If we get donuts we're really excited. You know, donuts and bagels are the biggest gift for us, sometimes chocolate, but to get an award and to get recognized by someone who's outside of my unit it's absolutely amazing, just wow!" Black said with her hand on her heart.Black said she will continue writing poems for the families she cares for. 2149
