The Great Bambino, the King of Rock and Roll, and the former leader of "America's Team" are among those set to receive the highest honor that a president can bestow on a civilian.The White House announced Saturday that President Donald Trump will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to seven people next week. The list, which names three posthumous recipients, includes sports and entertainment legends such as Babe Ruth and Elvis Presley as well as political and charitable luminaries such as philanthropist Miriam Adelson, Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch and the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.Adelson, the wife of billionaire Republican donor Sheldon Adelson, is cited by the White House for founding research centers committed to fighting substance abuse and, with her husband, establishing the Adelson Medical Research Foundation, which supports research on life-threatening illness. She has also supported Jewish schools, Holocaust memorial organizations, and Israeli military personnel and veterans, the White House noted.The Adelsons were among the Republican Party's largest benefactors this midterm election, donating a whopping 2 million to GOP super PACs through September.The White House also lauded the accomplishments of Hatch, one of the longest-serving senators in US history, citing his four decades of legislative accomplishments and his leadership on judicial confirmations.Scalia, a conservative judicial icon, was cited by the White House for "insisting that the role of federal judges is to uphold the original meaning of the Constitution — never to impose their own beliefs on the country."The news release praised Presley as a musical icon who defined American culture to adoring fans around the world and "fused gospel, country, and rhythm and blues to create a sound all his own, selling more than a billion records." It also noted his two years of Army service.Ruth, meanwhile, is celebrated for setting baseball records that lasted for decades, creating the Babe Ruth Foundation, which sought to help underprivileged children, and for raising money for the war effort during World War II. "His legacy has never been eclipsed, and he remains the personification of 'America's Pastime,' the White House said.Two football Hall of Famers are also among the honorees: former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, who also volunteered to fight in the Vietnam War and later became a businessman and champion of charitable causes such as the United Way; and defensive tackle Alan Page, who would later go on to become the first African American to serve on the Minnesota Supreme Court.The Medal of Freedom is awarded to those who have made "especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the country, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors," the White House said.This is the first time Trump is presenting the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The political ramifications of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death on Friday will likely ripple into November and beyond.Her death coming in the final two months of the 2020 presidential election will bring up considerable questions on who will replace her, especially given the divided nature of the Supreme Court.The court, which has seen its share of 5-4 decisions in recent years, could become a reliably conservative court for years to come if President Donald Trump is able to push through a nominee leading up to the election.Currently the court holds five Republican-appointed justices and three Democratic-appointed justice, but Chief Justice John Roberts, appointed by George W. Bush, has sometimes been a swing vote, siding with the liberals.But one person who is opposing a last-minute appointment to the bench was apparently Ginsburg herself.Dictating a statement to family that was released to NPR, Ginsburg said, “My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.”In 2016, conservative Justice Antonin Scalia's death came nine months before the presidential election, and became a focal point of that year's election. President Barack Obama attempted to fill the seat, but Republicans in the Senate blocked the appointment.Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer reminded Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Friday of that fact.“The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice. Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president,” Schumer tweeted, which were the exact words used by McConnell in 2016.On Friday, McConnell confirmed that a potential nominee would get a vote in the Senate, but there are questions on whether a potential nominee would have enough support to be confirmed. "President Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate," McConnell said. McConnell said this situation is different because Republicans control the White House. "Americans reelected our majority in 2016 and expanded it in 2018 because we pledged to work with President Trump and support his agenda, particularly his outstanding appointments to the federal judiciary. Once again, we will keep our promise," McConnell said.Just last week, Trump released a list of potential Supreme Court nominees. That list can be seen here.Joe Biden agreed with Schumer. "The voters should pick a President, and that President should select a successor to Justice Ginsburg," Biden said. "This was the position that the Republican Senate took in 2016, when there were nearly nine months before the election. That is the position the United States Senate must take now, when the election is less than two months away. We are talking about the Constitution and the Supreme Court. That institution should not be subject to politics."HOW A SUPREME COURT JUSTICE IS CONFIRMED- The president nominates a replacement to be vetted by the Supreme Court.- After vetting the nominee, the Senate may take a vote to accept the nomination. The vote nomination must have 51 votes in order to pass. If there is a tie, the vice president can vote to break a tie.- There are 53 Republicans in the US Senate. The iconic couch potato characters of Beavis and Butt-head are returning with new episodes, in a deal with creator Mike Judge and Comedy Central. Joining another 90s spin-off on the cable channel.Originally launched in 1993 on MTV, “Beavis and Butt-head” rose to popularity with its satire and stream-of-consciousness dialogue. The show tackled social issues at the time including teen obesity, workers’ rights and media trends.Comedy Central has ordered two seasons of the reimagined series, which will be, according to them, “relatable to both new and old fans – Gen X parents and their Gen Z kids.”“It seemed like the time was right to get stupid again,” said Judge in a statement from Comedy Central.Judge will write, produce and provide voice over for both characters. The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, the second vaccine to receive the FDA’s emergency use authorization, is on its way to states, according to officials with Operation Warp Speed, the task force overseeing the nationwide vaccine distribution.During a press conference Saturday morning, U.S. General Gustave Perna, COO of Operation Warp Speed, said “distribution of (the) Moderna vaccine has already begun.”Moderna’s vaccine was approved for emergency use on Friday evening. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was approved for emergency use a week earlier.“Boxes are being packed and loaded today. Trucks will begin rolling out tomorrow, from FedEx and UPS, delivering vaccines and kits to the American people across the United States," Perna said. "This week, in total, between Pfizer and Moderna, we have allocated 7.9 million doses of vaccine."He also took responsibility for discrepancies state leaders reported last week citing reductions in the amount of Pfizer vaccine doses they would be receiving. More than a dozen states said they were told by the federal government that next week's shipment of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine would be 20-to-40% less than originally projected. Perna said they are keeping an eye on manufacturing numbers and adjusting distribution in the short-term. USA Today is reporting the discrepancy is because of how many vaccines are able to be approved by quality control measures and released for distribution, not just how many doses are manufactured. “I want to take personal responsibility for the miscommunication,” he said. “I know that’s not done much these days. But I am responsible. This is a herculean effort and we are not perfect.”Perna did say “we remain on track to allocate around 20 million doses of vaccine to all jurisdictions by the end of December, with distribution of those doses pushing into the first week of January.”Perna joined other health experts in reminding Americans that just because the vaccine is being distributed, that doesn’t mean mask-wearing, social distancing and other precautions can be relaxed."Each shipment of vaccine is another few yards gained, but any good player or coach knows that you still need defense, along with offense, to win the game. I join our health professionals in urging Americans to stay diligent in their defense,” Perna said. 2322
