CHULA VISTA, Calif. (CNS) - Authorities Thursday announced a ,000 reward for information in connection with the January stabbing death of a teenage boy during a fight in Chula Vista.Devin Griffiths, 15, was at a birthday party in the 900 block of Maria Way when a fight between two other teens broke out around 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 31, according to Chula Vista police.At one point during the fight, Griffiths -- who was not initially involved in the argument -- jumped in to help a friend who was being attacked by several young men, police said. They were all described as white or Hispanic and believed to be between 17 and 20 years old.The victim's family has pledged a ,000 reward, in addition to a ,000 reward from Crime Stoppers, for information that leads to an arrest in the case.Lee Griffiths said of his son's death, "My world was taken away. My heart is crushed."Griffiths added, "When I saw my son the hospital, both of his hands and knuckles were broken open, which tells me he fought these guys. And I'm very proud of him and angry with him at the same time."Police have been trying to interview witnesses and other attendees at the party. They hope the reward encourages more people to come forward, and they're also looking for cell phone or surveillance footage of the incident."I'm really hoping that somebody will come and do the right thing," said Griffiths. (KGTV) — As a South Bay family grieves, a new report is revealing some disturbing new numbers when it comes to COVID-19's impact on the Filipino community in Southern California.Rick Malacas, a nursing assistant at Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista, first felt sick in late June. He suffered body aches, followed by a headache, fever, and a positive COVID-19 test. More than a week later, he sent a message to his wife, Wil, in the next room."He texted me that he was having trouble breathing," said Wil.She rushed him to the hospital. Days later, he suffered a stroke and was placed on a ventilator. Malacas, 45, passed away on July 11, leaving behind a wife, a grown son, and a 13-year-old daughter the couple adopted in December."He was my soulmate ... really said for me and my kids," said Wil.Wil's life is hardly the only one impacted. A Los Angeles Times headline recently noted that Filipinos are dying of COVID-19 at an "alarming rate." According to the report, data compiled reveals Filipino Americans account for more than 35% of COVID-19 deaths in the state's Asian population. Filipino Americans account for about a quarter of Asian Americans in the state.As for their mortality rate, that registered at a staggering 40% in Southern California, although the sample size is only about 50 cases and 19 deaths.JoAnn Fields, who co-chairs a local Filipino COVID-19 task force, points to possible factors: many Filipinos live in larger households, work in the health care profession and have health-related issues."Filipinos have a higher rate for some underlying conditions, like diabetes and high blood pressure," said Fields.Fields is calling for outreach programs similar to a county program appealing to the Latino community. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Chula Vista Police identified Tuesday a man and woman who were shot by the woman’s ex-boyfriend in a deadly domestic violence dispute near a Costco. The incident happened Monday afternoon while Angelina Perez, 32 and Samuel Valdez, 31, were loading groceries in the trunk of their vehicle in the parking lot of the store on Broadway with their infant daughter in a stroller. Sean Illian, 48, approached them with a gun and opened fire, hitting Perez and Valdez several times, police said. The baby was not hurt.Witnesses in the parking lot saw Illian shoot himself in the head. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police said Perez and Illian had been in a relationship which ended badly in 2018. Perez began dating Valdez just after the breakup, investigators said. (KGTV) -- A man died Friday after a fight broke out at a party in Chula Vista, police say.Chula Vista Police say they were called to the 1100 block of Ocelot Avenue around 11:30 p.m. to investigate a report of a loud party.After arriving on scene, bystanders directed officers to the 400 block of East Oxford in reference to a fight.When they arrived, police found two men bleeding from unknown injuries.
