JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV) -- The threat of wildfires in Julian may be going down. SDG&E is installing underground power lines to help mitigate the fire risk. The project is also expected to keep critical facilities open during pre-emptive power outages. Not only will the work help prevent fires, it may also help keep power running when Santa Ana winds start picking up. Crews were hard at work Tuesday putting underground power lines near State Route 78 in Julian. It will help keep the power running to places like Julian’s schools, post office, library and their Cal Fire station. Phase one of the project is being done along Cape Horn Avenue. Many homes and facilities have lost power there during shutoffs in the past. While residents in Julian were happy about the changes, they know it won’t happen overnight. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force arrested the man who designed Schlitterbahn’s Verruckt water slide. John Schooley, 72, was taken into custody Monday night at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, according to a news release from the U.S. Marshals. Schooley arrived at DFW aboard a flight inbound from China. Schooley was indicted last week in connection with the 2016 death of 10-year-old Caleb Schwab. Authorities had been searching for Schooley since the indictment. He faces multiple charges including second-degree murder, aggravated battery, and aggravated endangering of a child. Schlitterbahn Waterpark, Jeffrey Wayne Henry, the co-owner of Schlitterbahn, Tyler Miles, the director of operations at the time of Caleb's death, and Henry & Sons Construction Company, Inc., the design and construction company for Verruckt, are also indicted in connection with Caleb's death. The U.S. Marshals said Schooley will be held in Texas pending arraignment and removal to Kansas.  1078

KATHMANDU, Nepal — China and Nepal have jointly announced a new official height for Mount Everest, ending a discrepancy between the two nations that share a border on the world's highest mountain. The new height of the world's highest peak is 8,848 meters (29,032 feet), slightly more than Nepal's previous measurement and about four meters (13 feet) higher than China's. It's also higher than the 29,029-foot-height commonly used dating back to a survey conducted by India in the early 1950s. The new height was agreed on after the two counties sent surveyors from their respective sides of the mountain in 2019 and 2020. The teams used a combination of old-fashioned trigonometry and the latest technology that relies on readings from satellite navigation systems and models of sea level, according to the Washington Post. “We can be confident that this is the most accurate height of Everest that we have ever had,” said Susheel Dangol, Nepal’s chief survey officer, who headed the project. “It was a huge responsibility on our part. It is a moment of great pride for us.”There had been debate over the actual height and concern that Everest might have shrunk after a major earthquake in Nepal in 2015. The exact height is in flux, geologists say, because of shifting tectonic plates that can push a mountain up and earthquakes, which can cause it to sink.Nepal previously measured Everest’s height as 8,848 meters, while China put it at 8,844, because it did not include the snow cap. 1497

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - When you think of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a polling place probably doesn't come to mind.However, maintaining the security of our elections is a major function of the agency."One of the most important things we do is to protect citizens' constitutional right to vote," C.J. Sanders, an FBI Supervisory Special Agent, said.The FBI accomplishes this by working with the Department of Homeland Security, the United States Postal Inspection Service, secretaries of state and local election officials.According to Sanders, the FBI will set up command posts in Kansas City, Jefferson City, and Topeka to respond to any allegations of voter fraud.It's the same set up the agency has utilized in previous elections, and Sanders emphasized voters should have confidence in the system, even if more people are voting by mail this time around."There's not much different this year than we've had in years past," he said, "We've always had mail-in ballots and voting in person with the machines."According to experts at the Brennan Center for Justice, a nonpartisan policy group at New York University, 25 percent of all votes were cast by mail in the last two federal elections."Mail ballots are paper ballots. That means we do have an opportunity to audit all of those ballots," Lawrence Norden, Director of the Brennan Center's Election Reform Program, said.As always, the FBI will investigate reports of voter fraud, like multiple voting, false registration and stolen mail-in ballots.Sanders said there were some fraud reports in 2016 and 2018, but none were prosecuted federally.One of the biggest election concerns for the FBI actually originates outside our country."In years past obviously we've seen other countries try to influence voters through misinformation, trying to sow discord and undermine confidence in government," Sanders said.About a year ago the agency created an internal task force comprised of counter-terrorism, counter-intelligence, criminal and cyber experts who routinely meet to share information about foreign influence.The agency notifies Twitter and Facebook when threats, like bots spreading misinformation, are identified.Examples of the misinformation include telling voters they can vote online or by text, which are not options for casting a ballot.It's important to note that the following are not instances that should be reported to the FBI:Candidates campaigning too close to the polls.
