UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has clarified China's policies of continuing reform and opening-up and seeking peaceful and common development during his just-concluded visit to the UN headquarters, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Thursday.     During his 48-hour stay in New York, Wen attended the UN high-level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the 63rd annual general debate of the UN General Assembly.     Wen's visit was particularly significant in view of the increasingly complex international situation, the recent turbulence in the international economic and financial sectors, the sharp increases in oil prices and food supply shortage, and the whole world is keen to know in what direction China is heading after the Beijing Olympic Games, Yang told Xinhua. BEIJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- China on Saturday denounced the U.S. government's decision to sell arms worth of about 6.5 billion U.S. dollars to Taiwan.     Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said the Chinese government and people firmly opposed this action which seriously damaged China's interests and the Sino-U.S. relations.     The U.S. government, in spite of China's repeated solemn representations, on Friday notified the Congress about its plan to sell arms to Taiwan, including Patriot III anti-missile system, E-2T airborne early warning aircraft upgrade system, Apache helicopters and other equipment.     Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei has summoned the charge d'affaires of the U.S. Embassy to China to raise strong protest against the U.S. move, according to spokesman.     China firmly opposes to arms sales by the United States to Taiwan, said Liu, noting that this has been a consistent and clear stance of China.     The U.S. government's agreement on arms sale to Taiwan severely violated the principles set in the three joint communiques between China and the United States, especially the communique on the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan signed on Aug. 17, 1982, grossly interfered in China's internal affairs, endangered Chinese national security, and disturbed the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, Liu stressed.     "It is only natural that this move would stir up strong indignation of the Chinese government and people," he said.     "We sternly warn the United States that there is only one China in the world, and that Taiwan is a part of China," Liu said.     He said nobody could shake the strong will of the Chinese government and people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity and to oppose external interference, and nobody could stop the efforts to promote cross Strait exchanges and opening a new chapter of peace in cross Strait relations.     China urged the United States to recognize that it is seriously harmful to sell arms to Taiwan, Liu said, noting that the United States should honor its commitment to stick to one-China policy, abide by the three China-U.S joint communiques, and oppose the so-called "Taiwan independence".     Liu said the United States should immediately take actions to correct its mistakes, cancel the proposed arms sale, stop military links with Taiwan, and stop disturbing the peaceful development of cross Strait relations, so as to prevent further damage to the Sino-U.S. relations and the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.     China reserved the right for taking further measures, he noted.     The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC),China's top legislature, and the National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top advisory body, on Saturday also express strong indignation over the U.S. arms sale plan.     The foreign affairs committee of the NPC Standing Committee and that of the CPPCC National Committee each issued a statement, stressing that people of all walks of life in China were firmly opposed to the U.S. arms sale to Taiwan.     "We firmly support our government's solemn stances over this issue," the statements said.     The statements said the cross Strait relations have recently witnessed sound momentum, which accords with the interests of both Chinese and U.S. peoples. The U.S. proposed arms sale to Taiwan actually was a move disturbing the improvement of the cross Strait relations.     The statements called for the United States to immediately correct its wrongdoing, and refrain from any further moves that will damage the Sino-U.S. relations and the world peace.     China's Defense Ministry also issued a statement Saturday, condemning the U.S. move.     Defense Ministry spokesman Hu Changming said the U.S. decision has ruined the good atmosphere of cooperation that had existed between the two armed forces over recent years.     The statement also warned China reserves the right of making further reactions.

NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Tuesday that China and the United States are not rivals but partners in cooperation and they should work together to further strengthen bilateral relations.     In a speech delivered at a luncheon co-hosted by the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations and other friendly American organizations, Wen said China-U.S. relations have made significant progress since his first official visit to the United States in 2003.     High-level contacts between the two sides are more frequent than ever before, said Wen, who arrived here Tuesday to attend meetings at the headquarters of the United Nations.     "There are now over 60 dialogue and consultative mechanisms between our two countries. The Strategic Economic Dialogue and the Strategic Dialogue have in particular played an important part in increasing strategic mutual trust between the two sides."     On economic cooperation, Wen noted that China and the United States are now each other's second largest trading partners.     Dialogue and cooperation have also extended to a number of new areas, such as energy resources and climate change, he added.     In addition, China and the United States have maintained communication and coordination on global security issues such as counter-terrorism and non-proliferation and on regional and international hot-spot issues, the Chinese premier said.     The ever-deepening friendship between the two peoples is an integral part of growing relations between the two countries, Wen said.     He also expressed sincere appreciation to the American people from all walks of life for their abiding commitment to China-U.S. friendship and extended heartfelt gratitude to the U.S. government and people for their strong support for China's earthquake relief and efforts in hosting the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.     As to the China-U.S. relations after the upcoming U.S. presidential election, Wen said China hopes to maintain and develop the constructive and cooperative relations with the United States whoever becomes the next U.S. president. KUNMING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- China Eastern Airlines (CEA) will offer compensation of up to 400 yuan (57 U.S. dollars) to passengers affected in flights where pilots deliberately turned their aircraft around.     Passengers whose flights were canceled will get 400 yuan compensation. Those delayed within two hours of departure and without accommodation would get 100 yuan. Those delayed within eight hours of departure would get 200 yuan, said an official with the Yunnan branch of the carrier on Tuesday.     The compensation was set according to a guideline notice released by the general Administration of Civil Aviation, the official said.     From March 31 to April 1, 21 flights returned to their departure points in Yunnan Province, in southwestern China, leaving more than 1,000 passengers stranded at Kunming Airport, the capital of Yunnan.     "The time and energy we have wasted could never be compensated by 400 yuan," said Yu Xiaoyan, a tourist from the northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.     Yu planned to take the MU5793 flight at 9:50 a.m. on March 31 from Kunming to Xishuangbanna. The plane never came after waiting for seven hours at the airport.     She was offered a ticket change at 4 p.m. on April 1 and received 400 yuan compensation.     CEA finally admitted on Monday that some pilots on the 21 flights deliberately turned their aircraft around while in flight.     It originally said the incidents were due to poor weather. However flights with other airlines flying the same routes landed on schedule during the same period.     The airline has suspended the pilots. Further probing is underway, said an announcement on the company's website.
