BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday pledged its support for United Nations role of safeguarding world peace and coordinating on international issues.     Chinese President Hu Jintao said in a meeting with visiting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon that the UN shoulders increasingly important responsibilities for promoting world peace and development. China was a firm supporter and important partner of the UN, Hu told Ban, pledging that the country would fully participate in UN work, carry out its due responsibilities and maintain close communication and coordination with the UN.     Hu said China agreed with necessary and rational reform of the UN based on democratic consultation and would continue its cooperation with the UN as well as support for Ban's work in a responsible and constructive manner. China was ready to take an active part.     China fed 22 percent of the world's population using less than nine percent of the world's land. This was a contribution to global food security, Wen said.     Ban praised China's important and constructive contribution to safeguarding world peace and common development, hoping China would play a bigger role. BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee recently held a forum to solicit opinions and suggestions from non-Communist personages on the documents of its latest plenary session held late last week.     CPC Central Committee General Secretary Hu Jintao briefed the leaders of the non-Communist parties, leaders of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and persons without party affiliation on what was considered when forming the document. He asked them to raise suggestions on its revision.     Some delegates made remarks, approving the summary made by the CPC Central Committee on the experiences of the 30 years of rural reform and development and supporting the guideline thinking, objectives, principles and measures of rural reform and development.     They raised suggestions on the overall plan of urban and rural development, farmland protection, grain security, spread of agricultural technology and rural financial system reform, as well as on deepening cross-Strait agricultural exchanges and cooperation and improving grassroots democracy.     After hearing the opinions, Hu said the suggestions were valuable and reflected the in-depth thinking of the participants. Relevant departments would conscientiously study and adopt them.     He added China was an agricultural country with the majority of its population in rural areas. BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- The financial crisis and other major issues challenging the world will be discussed in the upcoming summit of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), according to Liu Jieyi, China's assistant foreign minister.     "The ASEM summit would be convened under the special international circumstance," said Liu at a press conference here on Tuesday.     He added the financial situation was in turbulence and the three major challenges, including food safety, climate change and energy issues, were interwoven.     Under the theme of dialogue, cooperation, mutual benefit and common prosperity, the summit would touch upon these issues.     The seventh ASEM summit will be held in Beijing from Oct. 24 to25.
