TIANJIN, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Coca Cola, the world's largest beverage maker, will begin operations at its largest bottling plant in China, a 900-million-yuan (132-million-US dollar) investment in Luohe City of central China's Henan province, by the end of October this year."We are very positive and committed to our growth here in China," said Glenn Jordan, president of Coca Cola Pacific Region, during an exclusive interview with Xinhua while attending the fourth Summer Davos forum held in north China's port city of Tianjin, on Monday.The soft-drink giant already operates 39 plants in China. It opened three new plants in Jiangxi Province, Hubei Province and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region last year. Also, it now has two factories under construction, including the largest one in Henan and the other in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.Statistics from the company showed its investment in the new plant in Hubei Province has reached 600 million yuan, while the cost of the two-phase project in Jiangxi Province added up to 250 million yuan.Jordan said these are all parts of Coca Cola's three-year, 2-billion-US dollar investment plan in China announced last March, and the project is now "well on track" in terms of infrastructure, marketing and product development.Jordan believes the expansion was good for both sides. YUZHOU, Henan, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Scores of rescuers on Saturday night slowly made their way through dust-filled underground tunnels to continue searching for 16 miners who were trapped following a coal mine gas leak in central China's Henan province.Twenty-one miners have been confirmed dead in the accident, local work safety authorities said, while 239 out of the 276 miners who were working underground escaped after the gas leak occurred at about 6 a.m. in a small coal mine in Yuzhou city."The thick dust in the shaft is hampering the rescue. We must clear the dust first. We have located the trapped miners already," said Du Bo, an engineer with the mine's parent company who participated in the rescue.He said more than 2,500 tonnes of coal dust were in the pit due to damage caused by the gas leak.The conditions of the missing miners remains unknown. Officials said the miners were located 50 to 80 meters down the shaft from the entrance to the pit."Fortunately, there was no gas explosion. Otherwise, the consequence would be disastrous," a rescuer surnamed Wang told reporters. He said most of the victims were believed to have suffocated.Officials said work crews are struggling to retrieve the remains of the victims from the mine.The mine is owned by Pingyu Coal & Electric Co. Ltd., a company jointly established by four investors, including Zhong Ping Energy Chemical Group and China Power Investment Corp. It was hit by a similar gas and coal leak in 2008. BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- China is enacting various measures, such as increasing its annual grain harvest and creating new grain safety legislation, to ensure a food-secure society, according to an official of the country's top economic planning body.Zhang Ping, minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said in his report to China's top legislature on Thursday that China would increase its grain output capacity to an annual yield of 550 million tonnes by 2020, which would be a rise in output from 530.8 million tonnes in 2009.Zhang said the country would further strengthen its grain production capacity, by means such as improving infrastructure construction, especially the farmland irrigation system, expanding the use of fine breed and high-productivity technology, improve farming methods and upgrading the farming industry's ability to resist disasters.China's total grain demand is expected to reach 572.5 million tonnes by 2020, and to maintain a food self-sufficiency rate of 95 percent, at least 540 million tonnes of grain would be needed by then, Zhang said.Zhang added that the NDRC and other food administrative agencies were working together in a draft law on food and grain.According to Zhang, China has established a preliminary emergency response system for grain safety, strengthening the production, storage, transportation and distribution of food and grain during emergency situations.
