PALOMAR MOUNTAIN (CNS) - Due to overnight snowfall and current low temperatures, chains were being required today on Palomar Mountain, the California Highway Patrol said.Only vehicles with chains, or four-wheel drive snow-rated tires, will be allowed access, authorities said."The CHP and the San Diego Sheriff's Department will be patrolling the area to monitor trespassing and make sure the roadways are kept clear of parked vehicles," said Oceanside CHP Officer Mark Latulippe, who pointed out there are limited facilities on Palomar Mountain for food, restrooms and trash.Mountain visitors were being urged to respect the privacy of residents and private property.Officials also recommend using extra caution on slippery roads, reducing speed and increasing following distance due to compromised visibility in wintery conditions.The CHP also reminded visitors to Palomar Mountain to "practice good snow etiquette."That involves:Parking only where legally allowed, and not blocking roadway accessfor emergency vehicles. (KGTV) -- A dozen undocumented migrants were arrested Thursday after they were discovered inside a stack of hay aboard a tractor trailer, Border Patrol says.According to the agency, the discovery was made at the Interstate 8 checkpoint in Pine Valley around 3:30 p.m. Thursday.USBP says a K-9 alerted Border Patrol agents about a void inside the trailer, containing the migrants.All 12 people were arrested along with the 46-year-old driver, who is a U.S. citizen, Border Patrol says.“Human smugglers have no regard for life,” said Chief Patrol Agent Aaron M. Heitke. “This tight space within the hay-stacks was not ventilated and was not designed with passenger safety in mind. I am proud of our agents. (WTMJ) -- A Wisconsin woman has been charged with second degree recklessly endangering safety after she allegedly had her 9-year-old son ride on top of her minivan to hold down a plastic pool.According to the criminal complaint, it happened around 3 p.m. local time on Sept. 9, when officers responded to reports of a child riding on top of a minivan.A 911 caller followed Amber Schmunk, 28, of Fredonia, until she pulled over and took her child and the pool off the vehicle's roof. Schmunk then continued driving down the road and stopped at her sister’s house where police caught up with her.Schmunk told police picked up the pool at a residence but did not have enough room inside the minivan. She said she “decided to put the pool on top of the minivan, but had no way to strap it down, so she had her child climb on the roof and hold it down while she drove.”Schmunk admitted to police she had her oldest son ride on top of the minivan, “but only for a short time, maybe 20-30 seconds.” Schmunk later stated it was safe because she used a strap to tie the child down on top of the pool.She also told the officer that she believed it was “ok” as her father let her do things like that when she was that age.Schmunk will be back in court on Nov. 14. If convicted, she faces up to ten years in prison and up to a ,000 fine. 1417
