SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Jessica Reilly, a Navy Air Traffic Controller currently based out of San Diego, has a high-stress job, but turns to her artistic side as an outlet. She combines her passion for the Navy with creating comics, adding a little bit of Dungeons and Dragons (which she learned from her husband) to create Gobbo the Goblin, a Navy sailor.“I have managed to breed a comic series for the Navy that is also targeted toward Dungeons and Dragons players,” she said, laughing.She said she’s loved art since she was a child, and started drawing her first comics on whiteboards while aboard Navy ships. It’s grown from there. She has a cartoon version of herself that goes on adventures with Gobbo. She said her real-life experiences combined with stories from other sailors motivate the storylines, frequently making fun of the daily woes of Navy life.“There is an outlet and a want for people to see comics kind of tongue and cheek of their own culture,” she said.She said this comedic relief is a good mental break from a tense job.“My job, even though it’s stressful, especially as an Air Traffic Controller, I can take a break, and I can remind everybody else that it’s not so stressful,” she said.Her art has turned into a family business. Her husband, who is a Navy veteran and currently in the Army reserves, writes comic books and she illustrates them. She said the first time they teamed up, they brought the comic books to a show and they sold out on the spot. Their company, Five Realms, was supposed to have a table at Comic-Con, which was canceled this year. To win a spot at the show, they had to submit their comic book, which was reviewed by judges. “It’s a huge accomplishment for me and my husband and unfortunately it didn’t happen,” she said, adding that they hope to be there next year.Jessica’s work has been noticed by the Navy. She’s been selected to do an Instagram takeover of the Navy’s “At the Helm” page during the week of October 25. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Major changes are proposed to an exemption in state law that allows for a person under 21 to buy an assault-style rifle with a state-issued hunting license.The senator pushing behind the legislation also says he could author bring about more changes next year, including addressing an issue 10News uncovered in the wake of the Poway synagogue shooting in April. On Jan. 1, the state of California raised the legal age to buy all firearms - including long-guns - to 21. There were, however, exceptions for those over 18 who are military, law enforcement, or possess a valid, state-issued hunting license. Accused Poway synagogue shooter John Earnest, 19, purchased an AR-15 style weapon from a dealer in San Diego. State Sen. Anthony Portantino, a Democrat from the Los Angeles area, has amended current legislation, Senate Bill 61, to eliminate the hunting license exemption for "semiautomatic center-fire" rifles for those under 21."This is the weapon of choice that is finding itself into the wrong hands and, frankly, killing children,” Portantino said in an interview. "From our perspective we want to make sure we have a bill that gets signed into law that solves a problem.” Gov. Gavin Newsom has expressed support for this change.Portantino also said he would continue to seek out changes during next year's legislative. That includes potentially installing better verification practices when it comes to exemptions. That's because Earnest, a college student, did not have a valid hunting license when he purchased the firearm allegedly used in the attack, Fish and Wildlife has confirmed. 10News reported that under current law, the Justice Department leaves the responsibility to individual gun shops to verify hunting licenses. It does not verify them again with state Fish and Wildlife during the 10-day mandatory background check. Portantino said this is on his radar for the 2020 session. "So yes that’s one of the things we’re looking into for next year is ensuring that when you collect data you want to make sure it’s used for the right purpose. We're definitely looking to make that system better without a doubt."The gun dealer, San Diego Guns, has insisted it did everything properly in the transaction. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Just in time for the Fourth of July, the Mission Beach Plunge pool is reopening to the public. The iconic pool was one of the original attractions when the amusement park opened in 1925. However, it had run into hard times in recent years and has been closed for much of the last decade. One management company went bankrupt. The next came up with a renovation plan, only to discover dangerous, corroding conditions inside, leading to the pool's closure in 2014.Thanks to a partnership between the City of San Diego, Fit Athletic, and Pacifica Enterprises, the renovated pool is almost unrecognizable. "This is absolutely special, incredible," said Dr. McQuary, a longtime San Diego resident who is active in the community."What I remember about the Plunge was the issues and concerns about how we can swim and still be safe. When things would fall from the sky, it wasn't rain; it was the plaster from the ceiling!"The Plunge at Fit features floor to wall glass ceilings and a retractable roof. It also incorporates some of the building's original features, replicating the tiling and original archways.Part of the new Fit Athletic Mission Beach gym, the facility also offers beach views throughout. According to the city, all 46 lifeguard and pool management positions are available at 13 different facilities. Anyone interested has to attend an initial tryout to assess basic swimming skills and qualify to enroll in the city’s lifeguard training program. The course teaches safety, first aid and lifesaving procedures. The program costs 1 and scholarships are available, the city says. Participants who graduate the program will receive American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Title 22 First Air certifications and will qualify to work as a lifeguard at city pools.
