For religious groups around the country, technology is helping them overcome the hurdles of the COVID-19 pandemic.Alma Gonzalez chokes up as she talks about her family and how they taught the importance of faith.“I was raised by my grandmother,” Alma Gonzalez said. “Very devout Catholic and very devoted to Our Lady, and she taught me how to pray.”It was Gonzalez’s upbringing that motivated her to take part in the annual pilgrimage in Palm Springs, California.“It was a miracle to finish it,” said Gonzalez.The 34-mile walk, in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a patron saint of millions of Mexicans and Latinos, has brought together thousands in California for more than two decades.This year, organizers canceled their plans, but adapted to the current conditions.It was the first time in 15 years that Gonzalez did not participate, but she did honor the Virgin de Guadalupe from home.“I think the attitude that I’ve seen develop is we can’t do everything the way we did it before, but we will do whatever we can to keep the spirit alive and I really see that among the people,” said one religious leader.The mass in honor of the Virgin will be held with a limited number of parishioners while respecting social distancing guidelines. Also, the ceremony will be streamed live through their social media pages.“That will give people at home that can’t come the opportunity to join in the prayer and be part of the community, even if it’s virtual.”Other religious groups are implementing the same approach.Jewish temples in Cleveland canceled their large public Hanukkah events, but are using the web to stream their faith.As for Gonzalez, COVID-19 won’t stop her from worshiping during the holidays. McGuire, a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, was the first to suggest the holiday. Meanwhile, others believe that machinist Matthew Maguire proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York.Regardless, Labor Day celebrations gained popularity and communities across the U.S. began making it a state holiday. First, Oregon passed it into law, followed by states like Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday and in June of that year, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday of each year a national holiday.Since then, Labor Day celebrations have evolved. Now, Baby Yoda is sharing the force with firefighters around the western U.S. and bringing smiles to thousands of fans.Carver told his grandmother he wanted to do something to help those on the front lines of the deadly wildfires. She heard of a donation drive helping firefighters and took Carver shopping to buy items to donate, according to CNN.Carver focused in on a Baby Yoda doll, so he sent it off in the care package with a note telling the firefighters, “here is a friend for you, in case you get lonely,” according to posts in a Facebook group dedicated to the doll’s adventures. 778

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe was set to officially retire on March 18, but according to a source familiar with the matter, he could be fired just days before and lose his pension after a more than two-decade career at the bureau.The embattled official abruptly stepped down at the end of January and has been on leave since that time.CNN has learned the FBI's Office of Professional Responsibility has recommended McCabe be fired and now the decision is up to Attorney General Jeff Sessions.The issue stems from findings in an internal Justice Department watchdog report that claims he misled investigators about his decision to authorize FBI officials to speak to the media about an investigation into the Clinton Foundation.A representative for McCabe declined to comment.That report, which has been complete for over a week, according to the source, has not been released publicly. The office is currently examining how investigations were handled at the department and the FBI in advance of the 2016 presidential election, including, notably, the Hillary Clinton email server probe."The Department follows a prescribed process by which an employee may be terminated. That process includes recommendations from career employees and no termination decision is final until the conclusion of that process.
