SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Six San Diego VA employees have tested positive for the coronavirus.The employees are with San Diego VA Healthcare System Counseling Center and are now in home isolation in accordance with CDC guidelines. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Scientists at the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute are working to replenish the California Halibut population.In October, they released 2,300 juvenile halibut into Mission Bay. Those fish were bred, born and raised at the institute. They hope it's just the start of a robust replenishment program."The species is pretty heavily depleted and for that reason, they're a good candidate to help boost the species," says Mark Drawbridge, the Institute's Director of the Sustainable Seafood Program.Recent surveys show the California Halibut is down to 14 percent of what its population should be. The most severe drop has come in Southern California.Hubbs hopes it can replicate the success it had with the White Seabass. It has released nearly 2.5 million seabass into the wild in the last 35 years."A lot of the process is transferable from one species to another," says Drawbridge.The Dick Laub Fisheries Replenishment Program oversees every step of the process, from breeding to release. Drawbridge says they've seen success in every phase so far."Our survival rates from egg to juvenile stage are typically 20 percent or higher," he says. "Compare that to the wild, where it would be a fraction of a percent. That's more than adequate to produce tens of thousands of fish."The next step is seeing how the halibut survive in the wild. The Institute put stainless steel trackers in each fish and will monitor them over the next few years.The program is funded through private donations, many of which come from fisherman who need a healthy halibut population to make a living. 1602

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Seven people are dead after contracting a flesh-eating bacteria linked to black tar heroin use in San Diego.County health officials said nine people who injected black tar heroin were admitted to county hospitals between Oct. 2 and Nov. 24 with a bacterial infection called myonecrosis, which is a severe soft tissue infection that destroys muscle. Of those victims, seven have died. The patients range in age from 19 to 57 years old.RELATED: Sixth death reported during San Diego's current flu season“People who use black tar heroin are not only at higher risk of dying from an overdose, but also more prone to developing myonecrosis and wound botulism,” said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer.One confirmed case of wound botulism linked to black tar heroin use was also reported in October — the first confirmed case in the county this year.Wound botulism, which attacks the body’s nerves, is also linked to heroin use. People who inject illicit narcotics like black tar heroin are at a higher risk of developing both infections, the county says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police released a composite sketch Wednesday in the search for a man who carjacked a woman at Fashion Valley Mall. The 57-year-old victim was walking to her car in the west parking lot near JCPenney Monday at 1:45 p.m. when the man approached her from behind, police said. The man put a knife to the woman’s neck and demanded her car keys and wallet. Officers said she turned over the items, at which point the man got into her 2017 white Nissan Sentra and drove away. The Sentra was later recovered, according to police.
