SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A trip to a dog park in Ocean Beach ended in a hospital visit for one San Diego couple.“I want her to go to jail, she assaulted my husband, and I’m angry about it,” said Ash O’Brien.O'Brien said she and her husband were at Dusty Rhodes Dog Park in Ocean Beach Thursday afternoon with their three-month-old puppy. They sat at a picnic table and began enjoying a meal when a woman reportedly confronted them for not wearing facial coverings and eating at the park where there is a no food policy.The confrontation ended with O’Brien’s husband being pepper-sprayed by the woman.“If we knew there was a no food policy, we wouldn’t have brought it into the park,” said O’Brien. “The lady who maced him automatically started saying stuff about us not wearing a mask when we were social distancing; there was no one near us.”O’Brien said that after exchanging words, the woman walked away from the picnic table but returned after a few minutes and did the unexpected.“She just came up without saying anything and just stuck the mace can right in front of my face,” said O’Brien.“My husband, being a good guy, walked in front of her and was like ‘hey calm down please don’t do this’ and then she grabbed him and just starting macing him, she used the entire can on him.”“We drove to the hospital, he got treated and everything,” said O’Brien.O’Brien said the pepper spray got on her arms and started to burn, while her husband was sprayed in the face.A witness captured part of the incident on camera and told ABC 10News she was shocked at what she was seeing. She recorded the woman’s license plate number.The couple filed a police report with the San Diego Police Department. The department confirmed they took a misdemeanor battery report but could not immediately provide further details.O’Brien was thankful none of the dogs at the park were injured by the pepper spray and wants the woman to be held accountable for the incident.“People don’t need to be getting assaulted for not wearing a mask in a public outdoor area,” she said. 2055

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two men were stabbed and an officer was headbutted after a fight erupted between two groups outside a Gaslamp District nightclub.Two large groups of men were ejected from Phantom nightclub on Fifth Avenue shortly before 2 a.m. and got into a street fight outside, San Diego Police said. During the altercation, two men were stabbed.One of the victims, a 22-year-old man was stabbed in the abdomen and taken to a nearby hospital. The other victim, a 24-year-old, received lacerations to his stomach, arms, and hands. Police say he was uncooperative and refused medical attention. Minutes later, he was contacted at 1200 3rd Avenue and fought with the responding officers, SDPD said.During the altercation, the man headbutted an officer and attempted to gouge out the eyes of another officer, police said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With the help of witnesses, a driver was arrested late Wednesday night after police said he crashed into several parked cars before taking a U-turn and crashing head-on into another vehicle.According to San Diego police, the incident began at around 11 p.m. on University Avenue in North Park.Cell phone video captured by a witness shows the driver hitting parked cars before trying to leave the scene. He then ends up on the wrong side of the street, where he then crashes into another car, the video shows.The man gets out of the car and tries to run away, but witnesses detained him until police arrived.The driver was taken to a hospital and is suspected of driving under the influence.A woman in the car hit head-on was also taken to a hospital with minor injuries. 798

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — UC San Diego researchers are testing a technology that's been in development for more than a decade to fight the coronavirus.In lab experiments, "nanosponges" covered in human lung cell membranes and immune cell membranes were found to attract and neutralize the SARS-CoV-2 virus in cell culture, according to a UCSD release. This caused the virus to lose about 90% of infectivity, or its ability to hijack cells and reproduce.The tiny sponges are designed to impersonate and protect healthy cells by soaking up harmful pathogens and toxins, according to Liangfang Zhang, a nanoengineering professor at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering. San Diego (KGTV)- A local middle and high school team sweep a popular robotics competition beating out groups from all over the world.They call themselves “Team Inspiration.” The group of students has been working with robotics for nearly ten years.The team is comprised of six different schools in San Diego, including: Del Norte High, Scripps Ranch High, Rancho Bernardo High, Westview High, The Cambridge School, and Black Mountain Middle School.Last month the team competed in the 2020 International RoboSub Competition. Each team had to build an underwater robot.“The basic tasks include going underwater, seeing and recognizing images underwater, and going to wave points underwater,” says team member Colin Szeto.This Is the second year the group participated in the competition. Due to COVID-19, the competition was done virtually this time around.“It was a pretty good equalizer because we all got the same zoom playing field,” says Aditya Mavalankar.The student updated their robot design from last year and built an additional robot for the competition.“The idea was that both of them would go in the water together to distribute the tasks so that we could have more of an advantage,” says Ashiria Goel.The students also built the sensor navigation parts on the devices. It can “basically tell how far it is from other objects,” says Mavalankar. “We have cameras on multiple sides of the robots. We have hydrophones that’’s able to create an acoustic pinger in the pool.”Team Inspiration took home first place in the overall competition, technical design, and website.
