SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The trial started Wednesday for two San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies facing criminal charges after an arrest in Vista. Deputies Nicholas Morgan and Joshua Nahan are charged with assault for what District Attorney Summer Stephan calls illegal actions during the encounter. Gerardo Martinez Jr. and his father were taken into custody last May after the deputies responded to a domestic violence call. Part of the 911 call was played for jurors during opening statements Tuesday. The panel also saw cell phone video of the arrest recorded by a neighbor. The now-viral video shows Deputy Nahan push Martinez Sr. into a fence while handcuffed. Martinez Jr. was repeatedly struck in the head by Deputy Morgan while on a concrete sidewalk. “Law enforcement officers hold a position of trust in our community and are required to abide by the rules in the exercise of their powers. The evidence on which the charges are based shows the force used by the two deputies exceeded the legal line, violating that public trust. For justice to thrive, it is important that no one is above the law,” Stephan said in November. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The sticker-shock of college can be daunting, but with planning and some research there is financial aid out there for the taking.To get the process started families must fill out the Free Application for Student Aid, better known as the FAFSA.The FAFSA is roughly 156 questions and looks at a family's financial situation.Colleges nationwide use the FAFSA to determine the amount of financial aid to award to students,The form can now be filled out online but college planning expert Ron Caruthers also recommends printing a paper copy for reference because it contains more guidance.“It’s my bread and butter because so many families really make mistakes and don’t understand the process," said Caruthers. "I’ve worked for 25+ years helping families pick schools that have money, not make mistakes on the FAFSA and save a ton of money on college.”Families can start submitting FAFSA’s October 1 and the deadline is March 2.Caruthers recommends doing so by January.He says a major mistake families make is listing assets they're not required to, including their home, IRA's, and personal property.What you should list: cash, stocks and bonds that aren't in a retirement account, and equity in a rental home.“This is an area of enormous stress because, for a lot of families, next to their house this is going to be their biggest investment, and it's going to come in a very short period of time, unlike a house they can pay off over 30 years,” said Caruthers.He says it's important to be detail-oriented on the FAFSA, for example, making sure you put income in the right line. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The South Park neighborhood has a new ornament for the holiday season, which residents hope will become a permanent addition.The South Park Business Group recently installed a new sign of the community's name on top of a building at the end of Fern Street."It gives people a little more of a talking point," says Tanya McAnear, who owns Bad Madge and Company nearby. "Having a branded neighborhood helps when you're on social media."The sign is part of this year's Holiday Walkabout Luminaria event on December 7. But people in the neighborhood hope the business group keeps it up as a permanent addition."I'd like to see it stay for a long time," says Wayne Prunkard, who has lived in South Park for 20 years. "It gives an atmosphere to the neighborhood, and I really like it."People in South Park have been clamoring for a sign like this for years, one that can help identify the area in the same way signs in University Heights, Normal Park, North Park, Hillcrest, Kensington, Barrio Logan, and Gaslamp do.The South Park Business Group paid for the sign. Organizers say they're looking into a way to make it permanent."It makes you stand out. It makes you unique," says Grace Gerber, the manager of Native Poppy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The number of San Diegans who spend at least 90 minutes on their daily commute grew nearly 15% over the last decade, according to a recent analysis.Apartment List reports as San Diego County's workforce grew 10.8% from 2009 to 2017, "super commuters" (commuting 90 minutes or more one way) grew 14.9%. Overall though, the share of San Diego's workforce who endure a super commute is only 0.1%.The study showed the trend is much worse in other California counties like San Francisco (110.4% growth since 2009) and Los Angeles (up 22.3% since 2009).Other areas of the state located just outside San Francisco also saw large increases, like Contra Costa and Alameda Counties, which saw a 101.8% and 126.5% increases in super commute workforce, respectively.Rural counties were also more likely to endure a long commute, like Mono County, Calif., which saw a 1166.7% increase."Beyond the super commuters who drive from distant exurbs to work in the downtown offices of pricey superstar cities, we also see high rates of super commuting in some counties that are much closer to the urban core," the study said. "This is evidence of the large number of super commuters who rely on public transit. Super commuting is also common in certain pockets of rural America, particularly those with active drilling and mining industries."Extraction and construction jobs were the most likely to have the longest commute times. Education, training, and library; and food preparation positions were the least likely to have the shortest daily commutes. 1561

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The woman accused of killing another driver in a wrong-way crash while drunk on a San Diego freeway last year changed her plea Friday.Lauren Ashley Freeman pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury in the Feb. 26, 2018 collision that killed 35-year-old Justin Callahan.Freeman's plea dismisses a murder charge. She is scheduled to be sentenced to 11 years and 8 months in prison at a September hearing.RELATED: CHP reverses blame in fatal wrong-way crash on I-5 rampInitially, Callahan was deemed responsible for the crash. The position of his Volkswagen Jetta after the crash led CHP officers to believe he was at fault. But California Highway Patrol investigators reversed their findings after Callahan's family refuted the claim and the case was re-opened. Freeman was charged with causing the fatal crash in November.Callahan was driving to his Ocean Beach home from work in Chula Vista when the crash occurred on a transition ramp from northbound Interstate 5 and westbound I-8 just before 2 a.m.The 35-year-old died at the scene, while Freeman and a passenger in her Toyota Camry sustained major injuries. Investigators said Freeman had a blood alcohol content of .28 at the time of the crash. 1272
