NEW YORK (AP) — A new government report shows that since the coronavirus pandemic began, the U.S. has seen 300,000 more deaths than it usually would.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been tracking how many deaths have been reported and comparing them with counts seen in other years. Usually, between the beginning of February and the end of September, about 1.9 million deaths are reported. This year, it’s closer to 2.2 million – a 14.5% increase.The CDC says the coronavirus was involved in about two-thirds of the excess deaths. CDC officials say it’s likely the virus was a factor in many other deaths too. For example, someone with heart attack symptoms may have hesitated to go to a hospital that was busy with coronavirus patients.The largest segment of the excess deaths, about 95,000, were in elderly people ages 75 to 84. That was 21.5% more than in a normal year. But the biggest relative increase, 26.5%, was in people ages 25 to 44. Deaths in people younger than 25 actually dropped slightly.Deaths were up for different racial and ethnic groups, but the largest increase – 54% – was among Hispanic Americans.According to a printed study in the Journal of Hospital Medicine, since the pandemic began, the mortality rate among hospitalized patients dropped by 18 percentage points.Researchers said the patients in the study now have a 7.6% chance of dying, whereas they had a 25.6% chance of dying at the start of the pandemic. 1465

That means about 200 spots are going unused."I will watch people come into North Park and circle the parking garage looking for a parking spot, not knowing they're circling a place with 400 available ones," says Angela Landsberg, the Executive Director of North Park Main Street.Landsberg says the garage is often empty because there aren't enough signs letting people know it's there. She also says the only entrance, on 29th Street, makes it hard for people to access. She'd like to see the owners do more to promote it as an option for parking in the area."I think that people are not used to getting out and walking," she says. "The expectation is that we are going to pull up and have parking right next to the businesses that exist and that's not realistic looking forward."The garage charges an hour, with a daily maximum. It also charges flat rates during special events. New Orleans city officials have set a tentative date to remove the bodies of two workers that have been trapped inside a partially-collapsed construction site since October.The efforts to recover the bodies of the workers trapped in the collapsed Hard Rock Hotel construction site could begin as early as July 13, according to NOLA.com.A spokesman for the city said in a press briefing on Tuesday that crews have finished taking down three buildings that surround the hotel and are currently assembling cranes to work on the building itself.Crews could begin working on the hotel by Monday, and officials say it could take four to five days before rescuers can remove the remains of the two workers.The two workers were killed in a partial collapse of the Hard Rock Hotel construction site in downtown New Orleans on Oct. 12. AMC Entertainment said Thursday that it expects to open the doors to more than 100 cinemas — or about a sixth of its nationwide locations — on Aug. 20 with throwback pricing for a day. AMC theaters have reopened in numerous international countries but have remained shuttered in the U.S. since March. The restaurant closed its dining room with the rest of the city in mid-March.It seats about three dozen people in the St. George section of Staten Island. Since opening in 2007, it has featured a rotating special menu prepared by the women along with an Italian menu.It’s known as the Nonna Project, which is Italian for “grandma.”To create a revenue stream and protect the health of the grandmothers and staff, they have not reopened.The women head to the kitchen one at a time to make batches of sauce to sell on the restaurant website.Rosa Correa will share her recipe for her delicious sauce from Peru.
