SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several asylum seekers had their first immigration hearing before a San Diego judge Tuesday afternoon. Six migrants from Honduras and one from Guatemala were scheduled to appear for their first hearing. The group is among roughly 240 people waiting in shelters in Tijuana under President Trump's new policy. Robyn Barnard is an immigration attorney with the group Human Rights First. She's representing two men from Honduras. She met with her clients Tuesday morning after they crossed into the United States at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. "One of my clients is a leader in his church. I think he relies on his faith. He brought us all together to pray before they presented at the port, which was a very touching moment," said Barnard. The judge granted her motion to allow her clients to be interviewed by the Department of Homeland Security Officials before being returned to the shelter in Mexico. She said they fear for their lives there."That's because one, they are asylum seekers, they're not Mexican nationals, they don't feel like they would be able to go seek protection from authorities because they are seen as migrants and foreigners," said Barnard. Barnard said her clients have family in the United States ready to accept them while their claims are processed. "They've received verbal slurs for being migrants in Mexico. They are staying in a shelter because they can't afford to pay for housing. They don't have any right to work in Mexico, and the shelter has started receiving threats as a result of sheltering these asylum seekers," said Barnard. Barnard said her clients were supposed to meet with DHS at the Port of Entry in San Ysidro sometime Tuesday, but as of five p.m she had not received an update on their status. Their next immigration hearing in San Diego is scheduled for August 6th. "They've got eyes wide open about the process, and they're hopeful that they will have their chance to be here in the United States while they fight their case." 2009

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six San Diego State University students have been diagnosed with mumps in the last week, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services agency. All six of the students live off campus at BLVD63, an apartment complex not affiliated with the university. “These six mumps cases represent a small outbreak of this highly contagious viral disease,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The best way to prevent mumps is by getting the measles, mumps and rubella, or MMR vaccine.”RELATED: San Diego State student diagnosed with mumpsAs a result of the outbreak, the agency will be conducting free vaccination clinics at the apartment complex from 3 to 6 p.m. on February 27 and 28 for BLVD63 residents and SDSU students wishing to be immunized. Two doses of the vaccine are recommended for all SDSU students who haven’t already completed the series. A third dose is also being recommended for anyone who lives or works at BLVD63. “Student Health Services (SHS) was able to quickly respond to this public health concern and worked to isolate these students, as well as provide initial information to our campus community,” said Libby Skiles, SDSU's SHS Director. “In collaboration with the county, our team is supporting the impacted students and working to proactively protect the overall health and wellbeing of our community.”The cases come amid an uptick in local cases in recent months, health officials say. In 2019, San Diego County recorded 66 cases of mumps compared to just nine in 2018. Mumps can cause fever, headache, earache, and inflammation of the salivary glands which results in swelling and tenderness of the jaw,” County News Center said in a news release. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — St. Augustine High School, an all-boys Catholic school in North Park, has filed a lawsuit against California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other state officials to allow the school to reopen for in-person instruction.The school says that after holding its summer school and athletic programs in-person for more than 400 students without any reports of COVID-19 cases, they are seeking to stop the state's enforcement against in-person classes during the pandemic this fall."At Saints, we don’t believe remote learning is sufficient to provide a quality education our students are entitled to and our families have come to expect," said Principal James Horne. "We are confident we can open our school safely, consistent with CDC and San Diego County health guidance. We ran a safe and successful summer school program and believe it is an indicator that we can safely return to school in the fall."The school says it adhered to the county's public health guidelines and safety measures during its summer programs, including required to face masks, social distancing requirements, air conditioning systems using UV lights to sanitize the air, and buildings and classrooms being regularly sanitized with an electrostatic disinfecting mist system.St. Augustine also said a distance learning option would still be offered for families who don't want to send their children back to school in-person."After appeals from many families to return to the classroom, Saints is pursuing the best way to offer opportunities that are the right fit for all its students and families," the school said. 1604

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday, Dec. 8 will be the tenth year since a tragedy in the heart of University City.Four people died in 2008 when an FA-18 military jet crashed into homes in the San Diego community west of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.Rebecca Cosford was in her home and heard two loud noises. The first was the pilot blowing out the plane’s canopy and ejecting. The second sound was the crash.“One was popping, then a massive explosion that shook the whole house,” Cosford remembers.Cosford and her husband ran outside to see a “large column of smoke”.Teresa Rizzo not only heard it: she felt it. Someone yelled at her to stay back and told her a plane had crashed."I just thought, 'That was an airplane?’ That was an actual airplane that fell out of the sky and exploded around the corner from my house?"Marine pilot Dan Neubauer’s parachute landed a block west of the crash site after he ejected. He had been trying to reach MCAS Miramar on one engine, but his second engine failed. The FA-18 dropped like a stone.The four lives lost on the ground were Dong Yoon’s family."I believe my wife and two babies and my mother-in-law are in heaven with God," Yoon said after the crash.Neighbors had tried to help when disaster struck. Alain Blanc had a cell phone in one hand, 911 on the line. His other hand was holding a hose as firefighters arrived."There are moments we don't have time to be scared, you react! I heard this incredible bang, the earth shook, and I was outside. How I got there, don't ask me," said Blanc.Today, two new homes stand where the other two were destroyed.
