 Another Rikers Island correction officer has been attacked on the job by an inmate. The Department of Correction’s union says it’s the fourth such attack in just six weeks.The union is calling on city officials to make changes immediately to protect the officers.The 25-year-old officer is recovering from a broken nose and first- and third-degree burns after he was attacked during his shift on Saturday night, officials said.“One inmate sucker-punched him from the side and took the hot water and threw it on him,” said Elias Husamudeen, president of the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association.J’von Johnson, 21, is facing felony assault charges for his alleged role in the attack.“Outrageous attacks like this, on an officer just doing his job helping keep the rest of us safe, are exactly why this inmate was immediately placed into more restrictive custody,” said Peter Thorne, the DOC’s deputy commissioner of public information.Husamudeen said the attack wasn’t all that surprising.“For us, the writing is on the wall,” he said.Just five weeks ago, 39-year-old Jean Souffrant, also a Rikers correction officer, suffered a brutal attack at the hands of a group of inmates. He suffered a fractured spine and bleeding on the brain.Last Tuesday, a 24-year-old officer was assaulted on the job.The union also claims there was another incident last week.“A female correction officer, who was breaking up a fight, and she, too, had her jaw broken by inmates who were under 21 years old,” Husamudeen said. “We do not have the backing or protection of the mayor of the city of New York and even his administration, his commissioner. There’s not enough being done.”Now, the union is demanding action from the Department of Correction commissioner, city public advocate Letitia James and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.“This guy who assaulted this correction officer yesterday, he just assaulted another one last year,” Husamudeen said. “He’s coming out of one of these programs where they put inmates … that’s alternative to punitive segregation.”Husamadeen claims attacks on officers have increased since the de Blasio administration did away with punitive segregation for younger inmates, which means putting them in solitary confinement when they act up.But a spokesperson for the Department of Correction said assaults on staff resulting in serious injury have decreased 14 percent over the last three years.The union disputes that number and claims there is all talk and no action. "Black Bear" is a proudly weird film that shakes up the formula to the point that it explodes like a soda left in the fridge.The experimental film's fortunes rise and fall around the dryly comic talents of Aubrey Plaza, who delivers in a major way, exploring the playful cruelty she's subtly hinted at in many of her comedic roles.Plaza explores her dark side as Allison, a manipulative actress, and filmmaker who rents a home from Blair (Sarah Gordon) and her husband, Gabe (Christopher Abbott) to shoot a mysterious new project. She quickly inserts herself into their personal disputes, taking a sadistic pleasure in driving a wedge between the couple with subtle insults and provocations.Allison sees people as her playthings, and freely spins lies, half-truths, and seductive inferences, slithering in and out of suspicion, trust, hostility, and feigned kindness toward her mysterious goals. The interplay between Allison, Gabe, and Blair was enough to carry the movie, which would have been better suited had it stuck with the theme to its bitter end.Instead, the script flips just as the intensity level simmers.Writer/director Lawrence Michael Levine divides the film into two parts. The first is a captivating psychological game, but the second seems like a slew of barely-connected outtakes in which actors have swapped roles.While the scenes are often fascinating as they stand alone, they don't coalesce into much of a unified purpose. If the goal was to satirize the art of filmmaking or play with the quirks of the actor-director-writer dynamic, the result is a convoluted mess. Whatever inside jokes or buried subtext Levine were going for just doesn't translate.The title, which is no doubt some sort of opaque metaphor, also refers to a literal bear who just shows up, because, well, why not? Once Levine has stripped his project of any sense of cohesion, just about anything goes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The clock is ticking as family members of Suzanne Johnson wait to see if Governor Jerry Brown will grant clemency before he leaves office Monday. Six-month-old Jasmine Miller died while under the care of Johnson at her home daycare center in North Park in 1997. Johnson found guilty of assaulting Jasmine and sentenced to life in prison. Prosecutors argued Johnson was frustrated by the baby's crying, pointing to the accepted signs of Shaken Baby Syndrome: Bleeding behind the eyes, and bleeding and swelling in the brain."We've seen a major shift in the science of Shaken Baby Syndrome," said Mike Semanchik, managing attorney with the California Innocence Project at California Western School of Law.According to Semanchik, "based on the science we know now, the jury at the time would not have found Suzanne Johnson guilty." Medical consensus now says those telltale signs of shaken baby syndrome can be caused by various medical conditions and accidental falls from short heights.Johnson says Jasmine fell out of her high chair but seemed okay, before becoming unresponsive hours later."The evidence supports an equal theory for a fall, as it does for an intentional act," said Semanchik.The science has not been enough to persuade the courts. All appeals for a new trial have been rejected."Missing her has been pretty horrific," said Sharon Johnson, Suzanne's daughter-in-law. She describes her mother-in-law as a loving woman who has remained positive, leading bible study and other groups in prison.
