BERLIN, Germany – The U.S. Air Force is investigating the death of two servicemen who died at a base in Germany last week.Airman 1st Class Xavier Leaphart and Airman 1st Class Aziess Whitehurst were found unresponsive in a dormitory room at Spangdahlem Air Base in western Germany at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The men, both aged 20, were pronounced dead shortly afterward. Both deceased Airmen were assigned to the 52nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, under the 52nd Fighter Wing.Leaphart is survived by his father, Malik Muhammad, and mother, Pamela Leaphart. Whitehurst is survived by his father and mother, Davin and Maria Whitehurst. The Associated Press reports that Leaphart was from Georgia and Whitehurst was from Arizona.In a statement Sunday, base commander Col. David Epperson expressed his condolences to the men’s loved ones.“It is always very difficult to lose valued members of our team,” said Col. Epperson. “Our sincerest and heartfelt condolences go out to the friends and families that have been affected by this tragedy.”An Air Force spokeswoman said more information will be released as it becomes available. 1141

Apple on Monday quietly announced new versions of the iPad Air and iPad mini, the company's first refresh for those products in years.Typically Apple creates fanfare around the arrival of new hardware. But this year it wants the focus of its upcoming spring press event to be all about its rumored streaming service. That's why the company let the world know about its new iPads in a press release.The iPad Air comes with a bigger 10.5-inch display (starting at 9), and the iPad mini has the same 7.9-inch screen (starting at 9). The devices come with an Apple Pencil and a processor that's three times faster than the previous models.The iPad mini will mostly serve as an entertainment device, likely to attract students and teenagers, while the lightweight iPad Air replaces the 10.5-inch iPad Pro in Apple's online store.Apple was widely expected to tease the iPads ahead of its spring event on March 25. But the press release was a surprise."Apple wants to get the iPad out of the way so it can hold its first event truly focused on streaming," Lauren Guenveur, senior research analyst at told CNN Business. "If Apple announced new Pads, it would turn into a hardware event, and that's not what it wants."Tablet shipments have declined in the past few years, especially among devices that don't come with a keyboard. "Perhaps what's the point for having an event for a declining category?" Guenveur added.Guenveur believes the new 10.5-inch iPad Air could struggle to find a place in the market considering the 11-inch iPad Pro is still a more powerful option that also supports the pencil. The iPad Mini, however, could push a decent amount of people to upgrade."There is certainly a market for the iPad Mini, especially among students and teens, but I don't know for how long the upgrade cycle for it will be,' Guenveur said. At least 28 churches around the country have now opened their doors to people fearing deportation and family separation. First Unitarian Church in Denver was one of the first to adopt the designation.Reverend Mike Moran with First Unitarian Church says it hasn’t always been easy.“We have received threats. We have received bomb threats, personal threats,” he explains.Members of the church formed a volunteer guard network, partly because of those threats. They patrol the church and guard the door almost 24-hours per day.Randy Chase, 69, is one of the guards. He spends much of his time on duty checking to make sure doors are closed and locked.“These instructions envision talking to officials and officers through the door, through this crack in the door and passing paper back and forth,” says Chase, pointing to a piece of paper taped to a wall.Chase says he worries his friendly nature may be taken by immigration agents as an invitation to come in. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers have come under scrutiny in the past for what some critics say are tricky tactics.Chase says he’s concerned those tactics could affect Jeanette Vizguerra, the woman he is trying to protect.Vizguerra has spent more than two decades in the U.S. and hasn’t been able to get citizenship. She has a stay order, which allows her to remain in the U.S. She’s living in sanctuary at First Unitarian Church.“I am an activist for more than 25 years,” Vizguerra says in Spanish. She’s worried her position as an activist makes her one of ICE’s targets.“I am of 10 people around the country who are very vocal. My social media accounts are monitored,” she explains.Vizguerra sees the church as the safest place she can be while her case plays out. She says it won’t impact her activism.“I see my future as continuing to help people because it is my nature,” says Viguerra. “That is my challenge to achieve solutions to the issue of immigration.” 1947

  

As the coronavirus spread globally, a canceled work trip here and there turned into a worldwide shutdown for business travel by air.The global airline industry is now on the brink of collapse. And while pressing pause for a few days or a week is strange enough, a freeze on business-class travel that lasts for several weeks or months has the potential to reshape why people fly. After a decade of huge growth, airlines are preparing for a staggering drop in revenue worldwide. Concerns over the coronavirus have crippled demand for flights, which in turn has caused many airlines to ground their fleets and lay-off staff.Recently JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes called this financial situation for airlines, "at least as bad as 9/11 if not worse."But even with a bailout, it could take months for travelers to fully return to the skies. In the meantime, a lot of business will go on without air travel.With huge advances in telecommuting and a growing acceptance of working from home, businesses have taken to platforms like Slack, Zoom and Skype to carry on with meetings while many miles apart.To understand the impact of losing business class travel, you have to understand how valuable business class tickets are to airlines. It might just be a few seats, but on many flights, premium seats actually account for most of the money the flight will make. Let's explain.Let’s look at a roundtrip flight scheduled for the first week in August between JFK and LAX. The round trip fare for an economy passenger costs 9. For a business class passenger that seat is ,867. And finally for a first class passenger the cost is ,032. In total, if everyone pays full price for their ticket, the airline makes ,362.But notice the distribution. If you do the math, you see that although business and first class travelers only make up 28% of the passengers on the flight, they account for 60% of the flight's revenue. This model doesn't describe every flight. But when it comes to airline economics, business and first class passengers have an outsized impact on many airlines' revenue. "They care a lot about business class travelers," says airline pricing expert Andy Boyd. "The other part about the business class travelers is not just the seat but business travelers become very connected with their brand and they fly a lot. It’s not just the money they make from the one seat, but what they get over time."Boyd literally wrote the book on airline ticket pricing. He believes airlines could bounce back, but he also says the virus could accelerate some trends already in motion for business travel."It could be a catalyst," Boyd says. "But what is really interesting, the new generation has grown up with technology, with cell phones. The fact that you are doing what many older people would call, very informal communication is more and more accepted as formal communication. So as young people who have grown up with technology get older, they may find that they are just as happy doing things over the phone as they are getting on a plane and going somewhere."Those combined factors could spell long-term impacts for the airline industry beyond the spread of the coronavirus. "Normally I would tend to say we would just get over it and the world would just get back to normal," Boyd says. "But with this particular virus and the way that people have responded to it, we may see some actual real changes to the way that both business and economy travelers travel." 3474
