KINGS MILLS, Ohio - Patrick Farrell has a very full heart, but he was running on empty Sunday afternoon.The Kings Mills man was straining to finish a 100-mile run to raise money for orphans on the other side of the globe.Farrell took only short breaks for fuel and to change shoes. His first pair had sheet metal screws on the bottom."Because there was snow on the ground (Saturday),” he explained after his grueling 30-hour endeavor.You could say Farrell had his heart in it all the way. “I decided to blend my passion for running and helping orphans,” he said.Farrell said he did it for six girls at an orphanage in Nepal who are not available for U.S. adoption.“There's a non-profit organization called Love Does and they're always looking for people to do fundraisers to provide financial support for the orphanage,” Farrell said.It’s a cause that close to Farrell's heart because he and his wife Susan adopted their four youngest kids from China.The Farrells said they got the idea after their only biological child, Karrie, noticed families who had adopted Chinese children. Karrie did her own research and started asking her parents to adopt, too.The Farrells’ kids know the importance of helping orphans, so they encouraged their dad on his run through their neighborhood.“I'm just so glad I'm not doing it,” said Caitlin, the Farrells’ first adopted child.Farrell said he went through three pairs of shoes running on trails and concrete. Other took turns running with him.Susan kept her husband fed and hydrated as best she could, but she could see him slipping as the miles and hours took their toll.“He really did great for probably the first 70 miles, but then as evening set in and the cold and the weariness, he hit a wall bigger than I've ever seen before,” Susan said.“I experienced sleep deprivation at a number of points,” Patrick said. “There's times when you just want to go inside and put your head down on a pillow and go to sleep.”But the people running with him and encouraging pulled him through, Susan said.“I really feel like the friends that came and helped him all through the night were a big key. I don't know if he could've done it without them,” she said.This was the second time Farrell has run 100 miles to raise money for the orphanage. (KGTV) - A convicted child molester may become the latest sexually violent predator to be released to East San Diego County.The Department of State Hospitals proposed Tuesday to place Herman Smith, 71, at 42920 Desert Rose Ranch Road in Jacumba Hot Springs.Smith has convictions dating back to 1993 for rape by force, rape of a drugged victim, oral copulation with a minor under 14, and sodomy with a person under 14, according to the Megan’s Law website.Supervisor Dianne Jacob slammed state officials in response to the relocation, saying they "have no shame." 598

Kimberly Kinell is used to having a routine. She’s up at 7:30 every morning, makes her coffee, and starts folding up her bed inside the New Haven, Connecticut hotel she’s now living in.It’s a routine she learned out of necessity while sleeping in a homeless shelter each night and spending her days on the streets.“We had to go outside and leave the building at 7:30 in the morning and not come back until 4,” said Kinell. “I had a tent on my back and two dogs.”Addiction kept her from a stable life. Kinell said the loss of her father and her husband hurled her into a battle for sobriety.“I was drinking,” she said. “Those days were dark, and it ended up putting me in a full-blown depression.”Her depression was so deep at times, she saw no future of happiness. “When you’re drinking or under the influence, everything seems dark and everything seems, my life just seemed unlivable,” she described.But there was a wake-up call, from an unexpected place. “The dogs made me do the right thing,” said Kinell. “They gave me a point to live, it was like getting up every day because I have to take care of them.”After watching the dogs struggle to survive without consistent food, she checked into a rehabilitation program.“I was there for 51 days, and when I got out, there was no place to go,” said Kinell.Terrified of going back to the life she knew, she got help from the Columbus House emergency shelter.“They just treated me like I wasn’t garbage, like I wasn’t throw away, brought me into a nice warm bed,” she said.But once COVID-19 hit, the shelter became just as threatening as the streets.“One room would hold like 10 people,” she said. “It was very, very touchy in the beginning because you’re just very scared.”Melinda Mallory, the director of emergency services for Columbus House, said the organization that provides shelter for countless homeless members of the community each night did everything they could to social distance and make hygiene top priority within the shelter.“We quickly realized despite all the changes we were making inside, we still needed to address the congregate living issue,” said Mallory.The solution: move everyone relying on the shelter into local hotels. With coordination from the city, Columbus House has been able to get more than 200 homeless people off the streets, out of shelters, and into hotel rooms during the pandemic.“They’re able to build upon their independent living skills while they’re here," said Mallory. "We’re teaching them community so they’re learning to be good tenants, to be good roommates."Now, a few months into the program, its success is becoming clear. It started as an effort to stop COVID-19, but it is now starting to look like a natural transition from homelessness to independence.“I hope that this hotel experience can go on a little longer, because it’s the first step of a person really understanding what it takes to really be out on their own,” said John Sanford, manager of emergency services at Columbus House.But, not everyone is on board for keeping this new model.“A lot of people do have the 'not in my neighborhood,' and a lot of landlords that don’t want to rent to our population, so affordable housing is always a challenge for the individuals we serve. But I always say, “if not there, then where?'” said Mallory.The struggle for affordable housing is too tough to overcome for more than half a million Americans who are homeless.“We have people who are CNAs, we have people that used to be professors, you just never know when life will happen and when you’ll need a little more assistance,” said Mallory.For Kinell, having a room she doesn’t need to leave every morning is helping her focus on what’s next instead of surviving the day.“That’s what it means to me,” said Kinell. “It means privacy, and it gives me hope in life that I am gonna get this job. I am gonna get this apartment, and I am optimistic as all can be.”A permanent home and a permanent job are the end goals Mallory and her team are trying to help all their clients reach in a time when both are tougher to find than ever before.“Once an individual has housing, all the other things will fall into place,” said Mallory.Kinell is seeing things begin to fall into place. It's a process that all started the day she checked in for a second chance.“I’m going on a year sober, I’m happy, no more tears,” she said. “I’m looking forward to moving ahead. James Nestor is the author of the book "Breath: the New Science of a Lost Art." He's written for many publications including The New York Times, National Public Radio, and Scientific American. For the past decade, he’s been traveling the world talking with top breathing experts to gather research for his latest book.“The book "Breath" is looking at how humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly and why we’re suffering from so many chronic problems because of it," Nestor said. "And it’s really based on finding ways to acknowledge these problems and how to fix them.”Chronic problems like asthma, snoring, sleep apnea and COPD.“Breathing can often be exacerbating these problems, or in some cases causing these problems," Nestor said. "So until you start breathing properly, you’re going to constantly have health issues.”Not just physical health issues, but mental health issues too. Kevin McQueen is the Director of Respiratory Care at UCHealth in Colorado. He says a lack of oxygen causes stress on the heart, but the most noticeable impact of poor breathing is anxiety.“People don’t always pay attention to how important breathing is, and how when you’re not breathing properly, how stressful it is,” McQueen said.Considering we’re in the final weeks of the election and in the middle of a pandemic, it’s likely a lot of us are feeling more stressed out. However, practicing deep and controlled breathing is scientifically proven to help us feel better.“One thing that you can do, is breathe through your nose," Nestor said. "Breathe through your nose all the time.”In addition to breathing through your nose, James suggests breathing slowly, deeply and more lightly. He says that breathing allows us to hack into our nervous system and it relaxes us. McQueen says he tells his patients to focus on ‘square breathing’.“I kind of try to teach them to think of a square breath," McQueen said. "So they take a breath in, they hold it for a moment, and then they relax and let it go. And by doing that, you can’t breathe really fast.”McQueen says fast breathing in our chest can lead to more anxiety and an eventual panic attack with hyperventilation. If you ever find yourself getting to that point, Nestor says you can start counting while you breathe.“If ever you feel yourself becoming anxious or stressed out, or your thoughts are scattered, take in a breath to about four, exhale to about six to calm yourself,” Nestor said.Nestor says the impact of breathing goes beyond anxiety and his research suggests we should be breathing deeply all the time. He says being aware of our breathing is the first step we can take to a healthier lifestyle.“You can exercise all you want, you can eat the best possible foods," Nestor said. "If you are not breathing correctly, you are never going to be healthy.” 2822
