SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - Some local stores are having a hard time keeping up with the demand from senior shoppers who are showing up for the special early morning hours amid concerns over COVID-19. Over the phone, a Costco employee in Santee told 10News that more than 1,500 seniors showed up on Tuesday and the store hasn't been that busy since Christmas or Thanksgiving. Once you got inside it was surprisingly empty,” says Jeff.Costco's one of the growing number of stores offering special senior hours. SEATTLE, Wash. -- Home to Pike Place Market, rainy days and views of the Puget Sound, Seattle is also one of the first places in the U.S. to initially face the coronavirus and the fallout that followed.“We were the first city that really had to grapple with this,” said Don Blakeney, vice president of advocacy and economic development with the Downtown Seattle Association, a nonprofit representing about 2,000 businesses and residences.When COVID-19 first appeared, they worried that years of investment in the downtown core could be in jeopardy.“You saw overnight downtown clear out of employees,” Blakeney said.That made for a tough spring there, but then summer got hot when protests sparked nationwide.While the vast majority of protests across the country this past summer were peaceful, when they got out of control, some businesses paid the price. Most have insurance that will cover physical damages caused by unrest, but there is no insuring for a pandemic.In Seattle, a few lessons emerged, such as taking health recommendations seriously early on and not hurrying a return to normalcy.“We haven't rushed it, but we've also seen that we need to be creative in the ways that we accommodate these small businesses,” Blakeney said.They also looked to streamline permitting, in order to get creative with public spaces, so businesses can expand beyond their usual four walls: even with the coming winter, which they’re already planning for.“How do you stay outside safely? You know, bring your own blanket, maybe some coverings, but it's largely, we're kind of learning as we have these new things that we're responding to,” Blakeney said.They are lessons that may help in their resiliency and that of businesses in other cities on the road to recovery. 2733

That's still allowed.The San Francisco Chronicle reports the Board of Supervisors voted 10-1 Tuesday to approve the ordinance making San Francisco the largest city in the country to ban tobacco smoking inside apartments.The original proposal sought to ban residents from smoking marijuana in their apartments. But supervisors voted to exclude marijuana after cannabis activists said the law would take away their only legal place to smoke.It's illegal under state law to smoke cannabis in public places. 669

SANTA ANA (KGTV and CNS) - Authorities say five people were killed Sunday afternoon when a small plane crashed near a Santa Ana shopping center. The crash happened around 12:29 p.m. in the parking lot of the Staples Supercenter on the 3800 block of South Bristol Street. No one on the ground was hurt. As the plane barreled through the parking lot, it struck at least one unoccupied car, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi said. A nearby intersection was closed in all four directions near the crash. The parking lot is shared by Staples, a CVS drug store, a Michaels' decorations store, and a Wells Fargo Bank branch. The crash site is about one mile northwest of the northern end of the runway at John Wayne Orange County Airport. 781

(CNS) - Orange County supervisors Tuesday voted to declare Aug. 24 as Kobe Bryant Day.Bryant was born on Aug. 23 and wore the number 24 in his playing days, said Orange County Board Chairwoman Michelle Steel, explaining why she settled on Aug. 24 as the date to honor the former Lakers great who died Jan. 26 in a helicopter crash that also killed his daughter and seven others.Bryant also wore the number 8 during his first several seasons in the NBA.Steel said Bryant, who lived in Newport Beach, was a "treasured member of our community," who "inspired so many men and women to pursue their dreams and never give up."Supervisor Don Wagner, in an apparent reference to Bryant's 2003 sexual assault civil case in Colorado, which Bryant ultimately settled, said the former NBA star had his ups and downs in his lifetime."Kobe Bryant's life, like each one of us who ever lived, presents moments to celebrate and to condemn," Wagner said.
