LAHAINA, Maui (KGTV) - A wildfire put a twist on the Hurricane Lane response in Maui Friday.California resident Victoria Monroe is visiting Lahaina and posted photos to Twitter showing high winds slamming the Maui coastline. She also captured the brush fire moving toward the coast.The fire grew to 300 acres by Friday morning, with reports of structures lost. One woman suffered burns to her hands and legs.10News received an email from San Diego resident Jodi Vachon who owns a home in the fire area."I'm just worried about not only the hurricane but the fire as well. So, it's coming from both ends," said Vachon.Vachon told 10news her home is all right, but she's heard from neighbors in Maui that at least two homes have been lost.She said they're hoping Hurricane Lane will bring some heavy downpours to the burn area.Meanwhile, travelers at San Diego International Airport are prepared for a bumpy ride as they board flights to Honolulu, where the effects of Lane have yet to interfere with flights."I like a little rock and roll," said Dr. George Pratt, a Clinical Psychologist with Scripps Hospital in La Jolla.  He flew to a lead a seminar on the big island of Hawaii on the subject of success.As for a successful flight for nervous fliers, he said, "Meditate. "Get them to safety and get back in and get 18 more."He’s part of the U.S. Veterans Corps and drove 14 hours from his home in North Carolina to support the so-called Cajun Navy, a nonprofit group of boat owners who began rescuing people after Hurricane Katrina.“That's what the Cajun Navy is known for,” he said.Now, they’re here for hurricane Laura, with storm damage that residents in this corner of Louisiana are just coming to grips with.There are some things that don’t mix: hurricanes, trees, and power lines. The damage is all over southwest Louisiana and it could be weeks before some people get their power back.Yet, that isn’t stopping some residents like Deitrick Broussard from trying to see if they can come back before then.“I was trying to rush and come and see the damage,” Broussard said, who evacuated with his pregnant wife.We followed Broussard as he looked around his home for the first time since Hurricane Laura hit.His relief was palpable.“I thought it was going to be worse,” Broussard said. “I don’t see any damage. I'm happy, so far. I just don't know what's inside there. But, yeah I'm happy it stood up. That’s great.”For many, though, getting back up on their feet will take a while. (KGTV) - Famed stage and screen actor John Leguizamo returns to the La Jolla Playhouse, this time behind the scenes as the co-writer and creative mind behind the new show, "Kiss My Aztec."This is Leguizamo's third show at the LJP. His previous two, "Latin History for Morons" and "Ghetto Klown" both went on to Broadway.But those were one-man shows; "Kiss My Aztec" is a full-size musical production."San Diego's always been great for me," Leguizamo told 10News while promoting the show. "It's a really well-trained theater audience that knows how to watch a work in progress.""Kiss My Aztec" tells the story of a group of Aztec rebels as they fight against Spanish colonization in the 16th century. It's a pretty heavy subject that deals with the loss of their culture, but Leguizamo shows it as a musical comedy and a love story."I felt like the Aztec conquest was ripe with musicality," he said."We're investigating Latin identity," said director Tony Taccone. "We are kind of in the past, but we're speaking directly to the audience right now.""People need to laugh right now," Taccone added. "They need to celebrate who they are and the culture and what they can do, not what they can't do."The show did an extended run at the Berkeley Rep Theater before coming to San Diego. LA MESA, Calif (KGTV) - According to the California Department of Public Health, seven deficiencies were issued after an investigation of Sharp Grossmont Hospital. In April state investigators conducted a survey consisting of 14 closed medical records. According to the investigator's findings documented in a statement of deficiencies and plan of correction report, "Hospital leadership did not provide notification of a potential investigation and the use of video recording during medical treatment without patient's consent." Investigators also noted deficiencies with regulations related to medical staff accountability, patient's rights, and use of restraint or seclusion. According to the state document, "The patient has the right to personal privacy. This Statute is not met as evidenced by: Based on interview and record review, the hospital failed to ensure the privacy of all patients undergoing medical treatment in the WHC (women's health center) ORs (operating rooms) when the hospital's Admission Agreement for Inpatient and Outpatient Services was utilized as consent to allow video recording during medical treatment. Also, the Admission Agreement did not allow the patients' the option to acknowledge and/or decline video recording. As a result, the hospital leadership allowed video recording of patients undergoing medical treatment without knowledge or consent." The deficiencies listed fall under violations to conditions of participation for a hospital as listed in title 42 of the federal code of regulations.   A deficiency is a violation of a federal or state law or regulation that the California Department of Public Health cites during a survey or investigation.Officials with the California Department of Public Health tell 10News issuing deficiencies is a form of enforcement action. It requires the facility to submit a Plans of Correction to fix any violations. According to Sharp officials, in 2012 they were alerted that beginning in 2011, potentially powerful drugs and equipment were missing from the anesthesia cart in each of Sharp Grossmont Hospital's three Women's Center operating rooms. The hospital installed a computer monitor with a motion-activated camera in each of the three Women's Center operating rooms. Between July 2012 and June 2013, the videos were recorded. The hospital says the cameras were intended to record only individuals in front of the anesthesia carts. In a statement to 10News, a spokesperson for Sharp wrote:"In their survey, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) identified areas where opportunities for improvement existed. The hospital addressed each area of concern and created a plan of correction for those findings. Both CDPH and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) accepted Sharp Grossmont’s plan of correction, as confirmed in a follow-up survey. The hospital’s plan of correction provides that:The specific techniques used in the 2012-13 investigation have not been used since and will not be used for any future investigations.Any potential future investigations are required to strictly adhere to Sharp’s policies and procedures;Medical staff will be kept informed of any similar future investigations that may occur;Patients will receive full disclosure of any future investigations that may affect their privacy;The patient grievance practices have been strengthened to ensure patient complaints and grievances are appropriately and efficiently managed; andAdditional measures are in place to safeguard against the inadvertent release of patient information to third parties. Staff and clinicians have been educated on the hospital’s plan of correction and policies. While we are pleased that CDPH and CMS accepted our plan of correction, we regret that the investigation inadvertently recorded patients and may have caused distress to those we serve."More than 400 women who claim they were secretly recorded are suing the hospital.Court records show a hearing is scheduled in September. 4026
